Thanksgiving In Oregon: A MapQuest Guide

Thanksgiving in Oregon is a time for gathering with family and loved ones, expressing gratitude and, of course, eating. As part of TurkeyQuest -- a MapQuest guide to Thanksgiving events, featuring everything from parades to holiday sales to activities for families -- here are two of the best ways to experience Thanksgiving in Oregon and one opportunity to give back to others.

Wineries Thanksgiving Weekend Open Houses

The area surrounding Oregon's capital of Salem is one of the leading wine-producing regions in this grape-rich state, and many of the local vineyards here participate in Thanksgiving-season open houses. The Redhawk Winery is a family-owned winery that is open year-round. The winery hosts a Thanksgiving Festival at the end of November featuring wine and barrel tastings, music and food. The menu includes cheeses, house-smoked salmon pate, barbecue sandwiches and butternut-squash soup. Discounts on wine are offered during the festival, but there is a $15 tasting fee (which includes a logo wineglass souvenir). Also see Eola Hills Winery (map) and Johan Vineyards (map) -- both in Rickreall, Oregon -- among others.

Thanksgiving Dinner At McMenamins Grand Lodge

McMenamins Grand Lodge in Forest Grove was originally built in 1922 as a Masonic and Eastern Star home for the disadvantaged and was renovated in 2000 for its current use. It is now a colorful and lively lodge where people can stay and be entertained, relax and enjoy meals. The Thanksgiving menu includes offerings such as herb-roasted turkey, baked yams with marshmallows and pumpkin pie with cinnamon whipped cream. On-site activities include disc golf, live music, movie nights and a spa.

Volunteer: Thanksgiving Dinner For Seniors

The Central Oregon Council on Aging provides Thanksgiving dinner to senior citizens who have no one to share the holiday with. The event will take place at the Bend Senior Center. Volunteers are needed to set up, clean up, wash dishes, set and reset the tables as needed and help serve.
