Michelle Obama Discusses Food Access In Chicago (PHOTOS)

Michelle Obama Chicago

By SOPHIA TAREEN   10/25/11 07:51 PM ET  AP

CHICAGO -- First lady Michelle Obama said Tuesday that parents can't be expected to give their children healthy food if they don't have good options for groceries nearby.

Obama, who is leading a nationwide effort to lower childhood obesity rates, spoke at a Chicago Walgreens store that had expanded to include fresh produce and grocery staples. She called it an example for other parts of the city and the country.

"We can talk all we want about making healthy choices about the food we serve our kids, but the truth is that if parents don't have anywhere to buy these foods, then all of that is really just talk," Obama said.

Walgreen Co. has tested about a dozen such stores in Chicago and plans to add 19 more soon. They look like mini-grocery stores added onto a traditional pharmacy, with aisles of fresh fruits, vegetables, bagged salads, eggs and milk. There are also pre-made salads and sandwiches for on-the-go meals. Store employees said the fresh food has been popular with customers.

Keica Abrams, who has been a customer for about two decades, called it "imperative" for the store to have fresh vegetables and fruits. She said she's diabetic and once when her blood sugar was low at the store, she had an apple and juice to get it regulated.

The addition of the grocery also gives parents healthy options for their children, she said.

Obama's address was the closing remarks to a mayors' summit on expanding urban food options. She challenged the mayors to look for ways to attract grocery stores and other businesses selling fresh produce for communities in need.

The first lady announced in July that Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Supervalu Inc., and other retailers plan over the next five years to open or expand 1,500 stores in areas without easy access to fresh fruit, vegetables and other healthy foods. She has said 24 million people, including 6.5 million children, live in such areas nationwide.

The number of Chicago residents without access to fresh food has declined nearly 40 percent in five years, but more than 380,000 of the city's 2.7 million residents still live in areas with few or no grocery stores, according to a report this week by the Chicago-based Mari Gallagher Research & Consulting Group.

Most of the pockets with few or no grocery stores are on Chicago's South and West sides, including neighborhoods around the Walgreens store where Obama spoke.

Researcher Mari Gallagher said expanded pharmacies are a good first step, but they don't replace grocery stores.

"It's not where you would get your regular three squares, but it will help those that are in a pinch," she said.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced 17 grocery stores will open in the Chicago area to help address the lack of access to fresh food. Some will sell foods from urban farms, he said.

Emanuel has made eliminating so-called food deserts – areas with few or no grocery stores – a focus since he took office in May. However, several projects were in the works before he took office, including a task force of city officials and major grocers committed to opening stores on the South and West sides.

Advocates do credit Emanuel with bringing a new energy to the issue. He's promoted urban farming and brought together mayors on the issue. Those at the summit were from cities including Somerville, Mass., Minneapolis, Milwaukee and Baltimore.

If she really wants to get the most tasty and healthy food into the hands of people, she should be speaking night and day about how the 46 million on food stamps can utilize that money to purchase food seeds and have a city/urban/country/balcony garden. Not a cure-all by any means but would address quite a few problems related to food, poverty, quality and geography all at the same time.

If there was demand for fresh fruit and vegetables in these neighborhoods, the vendors would be there. It has more to do with education and finances. The fact is junk food is cheaper and higher in fat, and therefore takes longer to digest. I applaud Mrs. Obama for the effort, but educational and financial realities aren't in her favor.

I really admire the Obamas, especially Mrs. Obama because unlike her husband she is NOT getting a salary. She could be living a very comfortable upper middle class life in private raising her daughters out of the fishbowl; working in a highly paid position she enjoys; socializing with her friends without the intense scrutiny she receives, etc. All because she believes in public service and giving back to your community.Because she has chosen the life of public service, she has exposed herself and her immediate and extended family to the rants of hate-filled anonymous losers. God bless her. She is a strong and beautiful woman inside and outside.

I just have myself to feed so I have much sympathy for anyone, especially single mothers making minimum wage with several kids, trying to feed their kids "healthy" food. "Healthy" food( veggies, fruit) is expensive relative to the processed foods. It takes planning ahead, but you can eat "healthy" and not break your budget. Also, all of you trolls implying Mrs. Obama is a hypocrite because she eats the "junk" food don't believe everything you read. You don't get to be as slim and healthy-looking (her skin is BEAUTIFUL AND LUMINOUS) as she is at her age by eating a steady diet of unhealthy food. She is advising MODERATION by eating "healthy" foods the overwhelming majority of the time and treating yourself with comfort foods very occasionally.

my wife just made a good point, it'd be nice if nature and evolution put there heads together and invented a new kind of food, humans have been eating the same kinds of foods for millions of years

I have to admit that I take the presence of grocery stores and such for granted - it's hard to imagine living where I didn't have access to a variety of stores to find what I want. I make healthy meals, but it would be darned difficult - and more time-consuming - if I had to deal with conditions like these. More power to the First Lady for trying to help!

(And no, the gummint isn't trying to tell you what to eat, just give you more options, okay?)

Obesisty and diabetes are chronic problems in this country and particularily in urban poor communites, access to healthy food options and nutritional education are crucial in helping solve the health care problem. We'll all be paying more for it, if we don't rid ourselves of this this albatross.

most stores that close in needy neighborhoods do so because they can't fight shoplifting. just visit the stores and see how so many things are behind glass partitions.

I respect what she is trying to do but I don't think she has the faintest idea of the real problem. People who are struggling in this economy cannot necessarily buy fresh produce as it is expensive. Their choice comes down to what they can afford to feed their family. A box of macaroni and cheese costs less than a few oranges. Cheaper food tends to be more fattening. I would like to believe Mrs. Obama is well-meaning, but she reminds me of the stereotype rich woman giving her cast offs to the Goodwill and then telling herself she is a "good person" for thinking of the less fortunate as she drives off in her Benz.

In our local food banks - fresh food and fruit are stables. If the produce is locally grown - the produce is cheaper than in stores. Its a mixed bag but providing access is all is health for us all - in fact, - why don't you buy a food bank a box of fruit, bags of organges - then you can tell yourself you are a "good person" and everyone else since you appear to need validation.

People that really care, walk the walk and help those in trenches dont.

They should sacrifice something else in order to have fresh food. Not all fresh fruit and vegetables are expensive and they are more nutritious than pre-packaged macaroni and cheese. What is needed is more education regarding nutrition and cooking.

This is a perfect example of common sense grass roots public-private community partnership. I think it is fantastic that Wal-Greens is stepping up. This is hows true community focus works - be it wellness and food or community based health clinics.

I love the idea of urban gardens - not only does it teach young people and neighbors actual sustainable skills but it enpowers them - again great job and partnership. Buy produce and fruits at urban farmer markets - major cities have them.

I would love for Detroit to be a major supplier of produce! Tear down homes that cannot be rehabbed and create gardens! Growing some of your own food saves money, brings the family together and teaches new skills.

Michelle - you are too classy for the trolls/paranoid naysayers. You so rock FLOTUS!!!!!

Detroit is in the fore-front of the urban garden movement. I'm north of there, and there's a garden a block from me, where abandoned houses used to stand. It's very encouraging.
