Occupy Oakland Protest: Police Fire Tear Gas And Beanbag Rounds, Clear Out Encampment (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

AP/The Huffington Post   First Posted: 10/26/11 12:23 AM ET Updated: 12/25/11 05:12 AM ET

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Dozens of police in riot gear and hundreds of protesters supporting the Occupy Wall Street movement engaged in a game of cat-and-mouse in downtown Oakland on Tuesday, with authorities using tear gas to respond to demonstrators' repeated agitations.

The latest such skirmish came around 11:15 PDT in front of City Hall, where a haze of chemical smoke still hung in the air following several similar clashes at the site over the course of the night.

(CLICK HERE OR SCROLL DOWN FOR LATEST UPDATES)

It was the fifth time in about three hours that police a fired a volley of tear gas to disperse a crowd at the scene where ongoing tension has erupted into conflict throughout the day.

The number of protesters has diminished with each round of gas. About 200 remained late Tuesday, mostly young adults, some riding bicycles, protecting themselves from the noxious fumes with bandanas and scarves wrapped around their faces.

Police have established a presence in a plaza where a pre-dawn raid Tuesday dismantled an encampment of Occupy Wall Street protesters that had dominated the area for more than two weeks.

Authorities removed about 170 demonstrators who had been staying in the area overnight after repeatedly being warned that such a camp was illegal and they faced arrest by remaining. City officials said 97 people were arrested in the morning raid.

The first evening scuffle broke out after several hundred people made their way back to City Hall in an attempt to re-establish a presence in the area of the disbanded camp.

The protesters had gathered at a downtown library, marched toward City Hall and ultimately were met by police officers in riot gear. Several small skirmishes broke out and officers cleared the area by firing tear gas.

The scene has repeated itself several times since. But each time officers move to disperse the crowd, protesters quickly gather again in assemblies that authorities have declared illegal. Tensions rise as protesters edge closer to police line and climax when someone throws a bottle or rock and authorities response with volleys of gas.

Police have denied reports that they used flash bang canisters to help break up the crowds, saying the loud noises came from large firecrackers thrown at police by protesters.

Helicopters scanned the area late Tuesday and scores of officers wearing helmets and carrying clubs patrolled the streets. Fire crews responded to small blazes in trash containers.

Protesters moved about uneasily even as one used a bull horn to express his resolve.

"This movement is more than just the people versus the police," Mario Fernandez said. "It's about the people trying to have their rights to basic services."

He added, "This crowd isn't going anywhere anytime soon."

Acting Police Chief Howard Jordan told reporters at a late night news conference that authorities had no other choice, saying the protesters were throwing rocks and bottles at officers.

"We had to deploy gas to stop the crowd," he said, according to a KCBS report.

City officials say that two officers were injured. At least five protesters were arrested and several others injured in the evening clashes.

The Oakland site was among numerous camps that have sprung up around the country, as protesters rally against what they see as corporate greed and a wide range of other economic issues. The protests have attracted a wide range of people, including college students looking for work and the homeless.

In Oakland, tensions between the city and protesters have been escalating since last week as officials complained about what they described as deteriorating safety, sanitation and health issues at the site of the dismantled camp.

When an Occupy Miami member offered evicted protestors vacant apartments in a building he owns in Downtown Miami's Overtown neighborhood, it seemed like the perfect solution: the 'Peace City' space would provide headquarters for the movement and shelter a small faction of the group's most vulnerable members. But it hasn't gone well. Other tenants say the building has become a cesspool of drug use and violence while non-resident Occupy Miami members are trying to distance themselves from the 'radicals' -- all while the two factions are wrestling for control over Occupy Miami's social media sites and future plans.

From the Miami New Times:

The feud between the Overtown occupiers and more mainstream members has only gotten worse. The two factions are now battling for control of Occupy Miami's social media sites. The movement's main Twitter account recently announced it had been "hijacked by a small, non-consensus group of radical members." The Occupy Miami Facebook page was also temporarily hacked by someone inside Peace City. Meanwhile, the Overtown occupation is slowly driving away more moderate members.

"This is a black eye on the Occupy movement," says Shannon Reaze, an Overtown community organizer and Occupy Miami supporter who is now helping tenants move out of Paz's building. "The violence and drugs going on here are way outside of what I thought Occupy stood for. This place is destabilized."

...The supposedly hard-core activists here spend their days drinking and getting high. And as Peace City devolves into lawlessness, the most committed occupiers are leaving. Local landowners and politicians want the place shut down, while cops are suspicious. Yet as long as Paz wants the protesters around, nothing short of a demolition order can keep them out.

WASHINGTON -- Occupy DC has a new lawsuit involving tents on its hands. But it doesn't involve temporary structures in McPherson Square.

Two protesters arrested during a February action outside Merrill Lynch's offices on 15th Street NW near McPherson Square have filed suit against the Metropolitan Police Department, Legal Times reports. (Read the complaint here.)

The plaintiffs, Samuel Dukore and Kelly Canavan, were part of a "targeted occupation" of Merrill Lynch on Feb. 13 where protesters were raising awareness about Merrill Lynch's reportedly close ties with Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.). Issa, for his part, claims that the reports of these close ties are "wildly inaccurate."

OWS reports via its website:

After the brutal attack on the attempted re-occupation of Liberty Square by NYPD on the 6-month anniversary of #OWS, a number of Occupiers have relocated their base of occupation to Union Square in midtown Manhattan, a point of convergence for several #OWS protests over the past 6 months.

According to reports on the ground, several dozen people slept in the park after the illegal and violent raid on Liberty Square. Over 70 people remain, now on Day 3. Although tents and tables are still banned, Occupiers have brought blankets and sleeping gear. Many are calling it ¨the new Occupation.¨ In addition to holding General Assemblies, Union Square Occupiers are providing vital jail support for those arrested on #M17 as they are released from NYPD custody. So far, the NYPD has made no attempt to remove Occupiers or prevent them from sleeping in the park.

The woman had the apparent seizure has been identified by the New York Observer as Cecily McMillan:

Cecily McMillan, an Occupy Wall Street activist once profiled in Rolling Stone, suffered a seizure Saturday night during protest action near Zuccotti Park. Many on-scene reported Ms. McMillan had trouble breathing after she was tackled and handcuffed by law enforcement.

A video uploaded to Youtube late Saturday night purports to show the attack. Two women can be heard commenting, “There’s Cecily,” then there is confusion as the police clearly perform a violent take-down on someone in the crowd.

According to Jeff Sharlet’s November, 2011 article about the Occupy Movement, this may be Ms. McMillan’s second violent encounter with police.

The paper reports from last night's chaos at Zuccotti Park:

At one point, a woman who appeared to be suffering from seizures flopped on the ground in handcuffs as bystanders shouted for the police to remove the cuffs and provide medical attention. For several minutes the woman lay on the ground as onlookers made increasingly agonized demands until an ambulance arrived and the woman was placed inside.

By 12:20 a.m., a line of officers pushed against some of the remaining protesters, forcing them south on Broadway, at times swinging batons and shoving people to the ground.

Kobi Skolnick, 30, said that officers pushed him in several directions and that as he tried to walk away, he was struck from behind in the neck. “One of the police ran and hit me with a baton,” he said.

Taking the Pulse of Occupy Wall Street

The irony is, Occupy Wall Streeters are no longer occupying.on Tuesday afternoon there were only about twelve people left in Zuccotti Park. They were standing quietly in the square, talking, rolling cigarettes and drinking coffee. One man wore a sign that said, “Quantum Democracy.” Other than that, it would not have been evident that a protest was even going on.

Rhetoric matters in political movements. So while some die-hard Occupy Wall Street protestors still come to the park to express their solidarity, they must now go home at night because they can no longer occupy. To me, the psychological divide between “Occupy Wall Street” and “drop by Wall Street” seems pretty significant.

If this type of lawlessness was occurring anywhere else, people would be complaining about lack of police action.

I'm overwhelmed and gratified by the extent of this movement -- I did not expect it would spread nationwide, americans as a rule tend to be much less vocal than European citizens when it comes to dissent, I would say that the extend and speed of this movement spreading like wildfire shows the extent of dissatisfaction with the status quo, We can only hope that the regressives trying to go back to the old "robber baron" way of life get the message before REAL trouble erupts. We do not need another Scott Olson in the hospital clinging to life. We do not need to have local governments and police emulate Tiananmen Square. Surely the Chinese government must be smirking after seeing the violence in Oakland, after we crucified them for doing the same thing. The armed police must be controlled and reined back, unless we want to kiss goodby our last vestiges of democracy and are willing to give up to the forces of regressive fascists.

I am as well. I've been calling for this sort of thing from my former students on Facebook for over six months. I just love the spasmodic response from the Right :) :) As long as they can keep it peaceful and respect property rights there is really no response from them that is appropriate.

The left wing has their Martyr in Scott Olsen, the mobs have spent days baiting police into a conflict, now the payoff. This young Marine needs to realize that the OWS mob and their supporters in the Communist Party USA, MOVEON, Soros, etc., want to destroy our military as much as the US of A. Don't these kids realize that anyone earning over $365,000 a year are in the Top 1 %? That places lawyers, Union Bosses, University Boards, Hollywood stars, journalists, small business owners, researchers, politicians and millions of other Americans in that group. Of course these groups have made more money, they are the best educated of our society. Michael Moore is making millions laughing at the OWS mob for not realizing he is one of the fat cats.

Yes, and as the Left demands from their figureheads (a little thing called honesty), Moore has said he is the 1% and talked aobu it. I know this is very hard for your mind to grasp. If you'd ever switch away from Fox news, there's soemthing called reality occuring around you.

How is he making millions off of OWS? Be specific, cite your sourrces.

The United States Constitution affords its citizens the right to peaceful assembly. It doesn't say anything like "until your city gets sick of you and doesn't want to pay to clean up after you," or "until you become a general nuisance" or "unless we don't agree with you." It says we have the right to peacefully assemble and protest whatever.
There will be an inquiry and investigation regarding who-did-what-to-whom-first. Way too many cameras around in the form of video, stills and cellphones. We'll find out. We found out what happend at Kent State. We will find out what happened here.
So many people who have commented on this story are clearly too young to remember Kent State. I was 11 years old and Kent State had a profound effect on me. These same descriptions about the protestors, "dirty, smelly, loud, they don't know what they're protesting, smoking pot, having sex in public, homeless, lazy, blah blah blah," those were the same things said about Vienam protestors. Turned out not to be true.
And the excuse of the National Guard for firing on the protestors? Pretty much the same as the Oakland Police. "We had to. They were violent, out-of-control." Turned out not to be true.
The truth is this: Both sides were scarred of the other. And they still are.

I remember Kent State!!! You are right about the similarities. Terry Jones and the KKK and the TeaPartiers are allowed to make a nuisance of themselves, but not citizens fed up with being marginalized by a small percent of the population??? Imagine that.

President Nixon was contemplating using an Atomic Bomb on Vietnam but decided not to as he was afraid of the student protesters. Presidential papers revealed this many years after the war had ended. Those protesters had no idea of what superior service they had provided to their country. They were true patriots and history will remember the OWS movement in the same way

I have no problem with Anyone-Democrat or Republican when exercising their First Amendment rights when it comes to Peaceful Assembly and Peaceful Protests. What I have a real problem with though is when the protesters get violent (not in all cases-but enough to cause serious problems) and disrespect the people in this country who fought for those very rights they exercise Freely.

I also am against anyone coercing battle fatigued, scared, hungry and jobless Vets when returning from war-to identify the enemy as the Big Corporations. In some instances this is true, but to have a sweeping indictment on every corporation and every CEO or President is not only unwise, but sheer folly. No one will get anywhere with that kind of approach.

Want to voice strong concerns-then organize in a more effective way, choose your leaders wisely as Unions do-and request Face to Face meetings with these executives-Stay Strong-Stick to you principles-but do so in an orderly fashion. You will get a lot further with this approach, I guarantee you.

The agent saboteurs pretending to be semitic didn't quite work; This is the next strategy. They've even got supporters of OWS turning their backs on OWS. The elite really do their psychological research. Playing people against each other is actually quite easy. All one needs is the right trigger to set such division off.

"They've even got supporters of OWS turning their backs on OWS"

That happens without clever mismanagement. The French Revolutionists turned on themselves. ALL groups seem to eventually turn against themselves.

Exactly right. The constant cry of OWS that "we have no leaders" though probably true, is the guarantee of the failure of the movement.
