The 20 Best & Worst Halloween Candies

First Posted: 10/26/11 09:04 AM ET   Updated: 10/31/11 12:52 PM ET

One of the most highly debated topics in America, well, maybe after politics, is which Halloween candy outshines the rest and which ones are bottom of the barrel; it is a topic where everyone has an opinion. There is the typical, but adored big-name chocolate bars, such as Snickers and Kit-Kat, and the seasonal suger-laden treat like candy corn and pumpkin mallomars; let's not forget the unusual and often forgotten treats that surface this time of year, such as Smarties and Good & Plenty.

This year HuffPost Food is settling the score, and proclaiming what we believe -- or rather know -- to be the 20 best and worst Halloween candies. If you stock up on the best goodies, you can sleep easy on this ghoulish night knowing that your house will be spared any toilet-papering or rotten eggs. If you chose to ignore this candy advice, you might want to sleep with one eye open.

I'm starting to think something is seriously wrong with me, because I absolutely can't stand Kit Kats? One caveat: White Chocolate Kit Kats? Amazing! Very hard to find, too. Elusive little buggers. If I find them, you can bet I'm hoarding. Let the Halloween kiddos have the Snickers and the regular Kit Kats all day long.

FYI: Kit Kat also comes near the top on this list of the best candy ever made (and yeah, I agree with several of the top choices, but not all):

I remenber the neighborhood divorcee who never got up before noon gave out those little airline size bottles of scotch.

Kidding!

The writer here is so very wrong about flavored Tootsies and Smarties.

The writer also left off a bad treat: Twizzlers. To the kids in my neighborhood i say, "Sorry. Next year I won't ask my wife to buy the candy!"

Smarties and Candy Corn are staples of Halloween. Sugary as heck, but since you only see them once a year, yummy.... That list looked like an ad sponsored hack job...

I think the worse thing my kids ever got was when they knocked at a door and the owner started laughing and laughing at them dressed up went to take a picture of them then shut the door.

Need I say Halloween was not in their culture

No we lived in a huge multicultural community in Toronto and I don't think they had ever heard or seen Halloween.

It was the look on my kids faces that was funny.

Gave out candy at a community event earlier this evening (all volunteers donated the candy they handed out)...saw the WORST thing ever a fake million dollar bill with religious scriptures written on the back.

PS
we handed out fullsize candy bars and let the kiddos pick the kind they liked :)
