Jack The Cat

After a nearly two-month-long search, American Airlines has finally found 'Jack the Cat,' a pet that went missing at New York's JFK during a the wild travel weekend that saw Hurricane Irene bearing down on the city.

Traveler Karen Pascoe lost her cat on August 31, after securing and checking her pet carrier. Another cat she was traveling with, Barry, made the trip from New York to San Jose without a hitch.

American announced the news on Facebook, where more than 16,000 people are fans of the "Jack the Cat is lost in AA baggage at JFK" group:

American Airlines is happy to announce that Jack the Cat has been found safe and well at JFK airport. American's team of airport employees have been focused on the search effort since Jack escaped on August 25, 2011. Jack was found in the customs room and was immediately taken by team members to a local veterinarian. The vet has advised that Jack is doing well at present.

American's priority was advising Jack's owner, Ms Pascoe, which occurred immediately after he was identified. Now we are also happy to advise all other Friends of Jack of this wonderful news.

It's still unclear how Jack escaped, but his presence in JFK's baggage facilities prompted massive searches by the airline, which reviewed video surveillance footage, handed out flyers to all airport employees, set humane traps and held daily briefings to brainstorm ideas to track down the fleet-footed feline, who's now recovering from dehydration at a veterinarian ICU in Queens.

American says it will fly Jack home to his owner in the coming days.
