Scott Olsen, Iraq War Veteran, Injured By Police During 'Occupy Oakland' Protest

Scott Olsen

TERRY COLLINS   10/26/11 10:51 PM ET   AP

OAKLAND, Calif. — A clash between Oakland police and Occupy Wall Street protesters left an Iraq War veteran hospitalized Wednesday after a projectile struck him in a conflict that came as tensions grew over demonstration encampments across the San Francisco Bay Area.

Scott Olsen, 24, suffered a fractured skull Tuesday in a march with other protesters toward City Hall, said Dottie Guy, of the Iraq Veterans Against the War. The demonstrators had been making an attempt to re-establish a presence in the area of a disbanded protesters' camp when they were met by officers in riot gear.

It's not known exactly what type of object struck Olsen or who might have thrown it, though Guy's group said it was lodged by officers. Several small skirmishes had broken out in the night with police clearing the area by firing tear gas and protesters throwing rocks and bottles at them.

Police Chief Howard Jordan said at a late afternoon news conference that the events leading up to Olsen's injury would be investigated as vigorously as a fatal police shooting.

"It's unfortunate it happened. I wish that it didn't happen. Our goal, obviously, isn't to cause injury to anyone," the chief said.

An Oakland hospital spokesman said Olsen, a network administrator in Daly City, was in critical condition Wednesday.

Later Wednesday, Oakland officials allowed protesters back into the plaza where their 15-day-old encampment had been raided but said people would be prohibiting from spending the night. The campsite itself was fenced off so it could be cleaned and treated with chemicals.

About 1,000 people quickly filled the plaza for a general assembly where speakers criticized city officials but urged the crowd to remain peaceful. Despite the pleas for order, a small number of people pulled down a section of the fence and the enclosure started falling like dominoes as others jumped on the downed pieces.

"I'm going to stay here tonight," said Jhalid Shakur, 43, of Oakland. "I don't have a tent, but I'll sleep on a bench if there's space."

"We're about to build our city back," he said.

In contrast the previous night, few police officers appeared to be in the immediate area.

Mayor Jean Quan said Oakland supports the protesters' goals but had to act Tuesday when a small number of them threw rocks, paint and bottles at the police.

"We had, on one hand, demonstrators who tried to rush banks, other demonstrators saying don't do that, and we had police officers, for the most part, 99 percent, who took a lot of abuse," the mayor said. "So yesterday was a sad day for us."

Jordan said an internal review board and local prosecutors have been asked to determine if officers on the scene used excessive force. He asked witnesses with recordings of violent interactions between civilians and the officers who came from several Bay Area agencies to submit them to investigators.

The clash Tuesday evening came as officials complained about what they described as deteriorating safety, sanitation and health issues at the dismantled camp.

The same concerns were being raised by San Francisco officials who warned protesters Wednesday that they could face arrest if they continue camping in a city plaza. In a letter, Police Chief Greg Suhr said the protesters could be arrested for violating a variety of city laws against camping, cooking, urinating and littering in public parks.

"Existing and ongoing violations make you subject to arrest," Suhr wrote in the notice, but didn't say if or when arrests would occur.

Police have taken down a previous Occupy San Francisco camp in the Justin Herman Plaza and also cleared another camp outside the Federal Reserve Bank downtown.

Police estimated at least five protesters were arrested and several others injured in the Tuesday evening clashes.

Oakland City Administrator Deana Santana said protesters would be allowed to assemble in the plaza outside City Hall from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. She pleaded with those who planned to make another stand there to refrain from smashing windows, lighting fires and attempting to stay overnight.

"If we could have these simple, reasonable requests, we think we can assure safety in the streets tonight," Santana said.

Tear gas, rubber bullets, flash-grenades...sounds familiar...Ah, yes, I read an article this morning about a 19 year old medical student in Cairo volunteering to aid the constant stream of civilians suffering from rubber-bullet wounds, bruises from lobbed canisters, and severe tear-gas exposure. Protestors freely and openly hurl rocks and glass bottles at riot police. It does not matter who tosses what first: once blood has been shed it will continue. Things will escalate from here. My prayers are with us all. God bless America and our fine citizens.

Do not throw objects that can injure leo's and your odds of being injured will be drastically lowered. This happens just when I was gathering some interest in the movement, I wont support any group that threatens the thin blue line.

You have to go to alternate news sources for the whole story. Government commandos asked local mainstream media to withdraw just prior to conducting the terror strike against the protestors in order to minimize TV coverage. Isn't it brave of our corporate journalists to put themselves on the line like this to get the truth out?

The facts aren't known, no investigation has been made and no validation that Mr. Olsen wasn't hit by a rock or bottle thrown by another protester. Why does the headline make that claim? It seems odd as another HP article has a claim the police didn't use any projectile devices. Perhaps it would be prudent to get the facts before condemning and laying blame. These kinds of articles bring the credibility of the HP into question.

The Mayor of Oakland just backed down and offered up an apology. She made no mention of rocks or bottles being thrown by the protestors (largely because there is no evidence of this) but she did mention about "the demonstrators who dissuaded other protestors from vandalizing downtown and for helping to keep the demonstrations peaceful."

Read it here:http://blog.sfgate.com/aallison/2011/10/27/occupy-oakland-mayor-quan-issues-contrite-statement-after-police-crackdown/

And then take your propaganda and cram it.

"And then take your propaganda and cram it." Nice. You believe that getting the facts is propaganda? It says a lot about you.

I read your link, nowhere does it provide a shred of proof counter to my comment. So your point is?

You're clearly biased and label 'propaganda' as any view that doesn't support YOUR belief system. And you have the nerve to call yourself "more human than you" if that's human we're devolving. Grow up.

NOTE: AP reports as of this morning Scott Olsen is expected to make a full recovery and will not need surgery.
09:28 AM on 11/24/2011
It's a good thing the protestors didn't leave him bleeding to death in the street like the cops appeared to be doing, otherwise that recovery wouldn't be so full.
12:33 AM on 11/25/2011
"bleeding to death"? Olsen didn't have a severed artery or vein; blood loss was never a life threatening issue in his situation. I also find it interesting in the videos there's no projectile or tear gas canisters near him. Had he been hit by one, it should be lying next to, or near him. There is what appears to be a rock about 5 feet from his head. It'll be interesting to see what the investigation shows.

There is a nasty and lethal tactic of firing tear gas cannisters directly at people. The Israeli defense forces have been doing it for years. Whether it was a cannister or a rubber bullet at close range, it was clearly intended to injure this veteran.

Violent conflicts between government and workers, many of them veterans, is a shameful and not uncommon part of US history. The 99% must overcome the financial influence of the 1% on governments at all levels. Nominate and support progressive candidates! We have the numbers. Solidarity.

Hypocrisy: Scott Olsen fights for the cause of the 1% (War in Iraq for Oil) they call him a hero. When he goes home and fights for his future and the cause of the 99%, the police state gives him no respect. Sad just sad

Oakland police are acting properly to protect what us 1%'ers have, own and want! When Gen. Douglas MacArthur ordered his troops to burn and shoot those veterans known as the Bonus Marchers, he set a precedent still in force today. Shoot to maim or kill those veterans demanding peace and justice. Also and too, what kind of Patriotic American Veteran would wear a shirt that says, "Veterans For Peace" or who would join a group like Iraq Veterans Against the War? Why should we believe combat veterans when they speak up against war or in support of OWS? What do they know, when did they know it and why are they telling us now?

Its to bad that Mr. Olsen was injured but the fact the he's an Iraq war vet has nothing to do with this story. He was one of a group of unruly individuals who where throwing projectiles at the police and happened to get hit by something. The story is written to bring attention to the public that this man was a Iraq war vet so as to garner sympathy for the protest. This, OWS type demonstration was supposed to be a non-violet protest. I didn't take long for it to disintegrate into violence. This is just the beginning. Probably more violence to follow. I hope Mr. Olsen has a speedy recovery.

Were you actually there to witness Mr. Olsen throwing projectiles at the police, or are you just accepting the police version of things at face value?

I said he was a "part" of a group "who" where throwing things I didn't say he was thowing anything. And he got hit by "something" I didn't say he was hit by something the police or the rioters threw. Did you even read the post. And by the way where you there? You missed the whole point of the comment. Mr. Olsen being a vet of Iraq has nothing to do with this article.
