SLIDESHOW: Shrivers, Kennedys, Others Help Raise Record Amount For People With Disabilities

People with disabilities, students, celebrities and members from the Kennedy and Shriver families proved this past weekend the fundraising power of "Best Buddies" coming together.

A run, walk, cycle fundraiser through Washington, D.C., raised a record-setting $1.7 million for Best Buddies International, according to a press release shared with HuffPost. The nonprofit provides one-to-one relationships, employment and leadership opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Participants in the Audi Best Buddies Challenge: Washington, D.C., included Timothy Shriver, chairman and CEO of the Special Olympics, and Anthony Kennedy Shriver, founder and chairman of Best Buddies International.

Lauren Potter, who has Down Syndrome and plays cheerleader Becky Jackson on Glee, also attended the fundraiser. A record number of students participated in the Fun Run, inspired by Potter, who shared her story with the crowd.

CORRECTION: This story originally said $1.7 billion was raised. It was actually $1.7 million. The post has been updated to reflect the change.
