The World's Top 9 Countries With The Fastest Internet Speeds: Akamai

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 10/28/11 11:00 AM ET   Updated: 10/28/11 11:45 AM ET

Akamai, a company that collects data about Internet use, says it gets over 1 trillion requests per day to its global server network. It has organized this data into its quarterly "State Of The Internet" report, which examines, among other things, the world's fastest and slowest Internet connections by country.

In order to be included in the report, a country must have made more than 25,000 requests from unique IP addresses in the last quarter. Akamai sets this bar in order to avoid making unfair comparisons between countries with large disparities in population or infrastructure.

Overall, global Internet speed is improving, accoring to Akamai. Between the first and second quarters of 2011, average global connection speed increased 21 percent and is now 2.6 Megabits per second. By comparison, Internet speeds in the United States (the world's 12th-ranked country) look fairly speedy at an average of 5.8 Mbps. However, residents in the country with the fastest Internet (see slideshow) enjoy an average connection speed of 13.8 Mbps, more than twice as fast as the U.S.

Over 80 countries on Akamai's list saw speeds increase by 10 percent or more, and one of the fastest countries, a small Eastern European nation (see slideshow), saw a speed increase of 29 percent. The United States even saw an increase of 26 percent, and that number may continue to increase thanks to the FCC's new broadband regulations, which plan to bring faster Internet to underserved regions of the U.S.

According to The MacObserver, in the U.S. broadband is defined as having speeds of at least 3 Mbps for downloading (from the internet to your computer) and 768 Kbps for uploading (from your computer to the internet).

Interestingly, downloading is usually faster than uploading. According to Huffington Post blogger David Weinberger, of Harvard's Berkman Center For Internet & Society, that's how the cable and telephone companies wanted it. Writes Weinberger, "Their business models assumed the value of the Net came from the content they deliver to us. The business models got written into a physical infrastructure that favors downloads over uploads."

Take a look at the world's top 9 countries with the fastest Internet (below), then check out the fastest U.S. states according to Akamai's recent report.

Sorry but My speeds here on Long Island NY are faster then all of these countries. Also I pay $39.95 This artical takes into account phone speed which yes some people still use draging down the U.S. speed. They just don't need more speed I guess. I remember connecting at 9600 phone modem cutting out phone service while We were online. So Our speed anywhere from 18-25 mbps.

what our alleged protectors - govts - seem to forget is even those on the bottom rung now need the net - bank, get job ...- giving monopolies carte blanche to rip off is so destructive & a gross breach of duty of care - it would cost nickels per head to provide a usable service to all if they simply scuppered their franchise

we have wonderful, classy, ad free TV here in oz - ABC - totally funded - 2c per day per head i hear - suspect the numbers are similar on this topic - i make that $7 pa

even pbs waste 10% of your time begging donations & sponsor promos - a total indictment on a sad society

$100+pm on $8ph - yeah right - ta guys

screw the bundled tv - almost compulsory

its a dumbing down disservice to society & the economy - if paying 4 it - may as well watch that rot in lieu of reading something beneficial

i sound angry cos i am

FYI

it could be worse - if i bellieve what i hear u get slow but decent net 4 sub $30pm - that would be ok by me - here in oz are up for about that for a phone line (pre requisite for adsl) alone - use it for calls or not

cable is more like $70 pm

now they are spending $40bn on a faster service - fiber to the home - mandatory - 4 a faster service i dont need - = $100 pm - big chance for wireless mobs methinks - ripping out all the copper pairs - madness

Look at the physical geographical size of these other countries in comparison to the U.S. and the density of their population and and how close these people live from another. Also, most of these countries internet connections are part and subsidized by their respective government infrastructure...
Besides, drive one or two hours and you are in different country. Yet, three hours later from N.C. and I still cannot get to where I am going in a neighboring state like VA...

The difference is, Internet access is free market here.
I live in the Netherlands (#4 on this list) and I can chose between about 30 internet providers offering different speeds and rates. This significantly drives down the cost and competition gives us fast speeds. Currently, I pay 19€ (about 27$) for 50MBit up and down, including telephone and HDTV.

And no, internet connections are not subsidized by the government.
Having lived in the US, I could usually chose between 1 or 2 internet providers, Comcast and AT&T, it's like a monopoly in the US, ev1l cartels.

I love the Netherlands. You've got the right idea.

I wonder if that's one of the reasons the South Koreans kick butt in multi-player online role-playing games?

Sigh. America fails in yet one more progressive category. For the corporation, by the corporation of the corporation. Thanks, GOP/conservatives.

Not until the U.S. internet providers stop categorizing DSL as broadband...
I know Walter Mossberg (WSJ/AllThingsD) has been bitching about this for years now.

No. You can thank Obama and the Dem congress we have had for the last 8 years. Where did all the stimulus money go that was supposed to improve the country's internet?

2007 + 8 equals 2015, are we their yet?

Given the GOP had Congress for more than a decade, and the WH why didn't they do something about it?

Guys like Aveindustries live in the past. If American started tomorrow it would take them 10-20 years to update their infrastructure to that of Europe.
i.e hi speed, rail, hi speed autobahns built with quality materials. bridges, tunnels. etc etc.
01:45 PM on 10/29/2011
More like 10-20 minutes, but we have better things to do like building giant Freedom Towers and digging giant underground bunkers just incase those Mayan prophecies come true in 2012. Germany and NL are ill equipped to survive a natural disaster like Planet X or an Asteroid Impact. Their feeble nations would get toppled like the Berlin Wall.

In 1998 I was working with a Swedish guy on a one year contract in Tenerife , Canary Islands, flying freight for DHL.

He told me that internet providers were giving away computers for a DSL contract. The Swedish govt wanted everyone online within 10 years. Sweden doesn't have many people but its huge with loads of rural areas were your neighbor may be 20 miles away.

Same here in NL where virtually everyone is online now and many banks have closed offices because most business is done online. IN fact, you can't find a bank with a teller,. Just an advisor for special things. This saved the banks tons of money. We also don't have an archaic things like CHECKS. Everything is debit and credit. You can't even get a job without a bank account and all salaries are direct deposit.

European implementation of the internet is far advanced from the USA.
