Last weekend Mexico City residents and art lovers watched as a parade of fantastic creatures wandered the streets.

Since 2007 the Museo de Arte Popular (Museum of Popular Art) has been putting on the Monumental Alebrijes Parade in Mexico city to promote the work of modern Mexican artists and artisans.

Alebrije's are fantasy like creatures that are partially comprised of parts of real-life creatures like flies, birds and lions. Think chimera.

Normal alebrijes are small, brightly colored sculptures made of wood or cardboard in central Mexico. The alebrije's featured in the parade are "monumental" because they're huge compared to their smaller and more typical counterparts.
