It's hard to separate filmmaker John Hughes' iconic work from the suburban Chicago landscape that served as a backdrop for so many of his films. (See the Oscar tribute to his work above.) Hughes was inspired by his surroundings after spending his adolescence in Northbrook, and after his film career took off he settled back into the outer Chicago area, this time in a 21-room mansion in Lake Forest.

Settled on 2.1 acres within one block of Lake Michigan, Hughes' former home is now listed with Coldwell Banker for $5.89 million. The home has an 11,233 square footprint and includes six bedrooms, six full baths, four half baths, six fireplaces and a three-car heated garage. The massive property boasts four bluestone terraces and a 21-by-50-foot swimming pool, according to the listing.

The home was originally built in 1929 for Arthur Farwell and retains its hardwood floors and original millwork. A two-story addition was constructed in 1992, with attention to replicating the architectural detail of the original home down to custom door hardware. Hand-carved wood elements, stucco panels and a Ludowici clay tiled roof add to the home's value.

Gawkers beware--the home is only being showed to "qualified buyers," Realtor Ann Lyon said.
