Most Millionaires Want Higher Taxes For Millionaires: Survey

Millionaire Tax

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 10/27/2011 4:12 pm Updated: 01/23/2012 11:51 am

Tax the rich, Warren Buffett says -- and a majority of millionaires agree.

According to a survey from the consulting firm Spectrem Group, sixty-eight percent of millionaires -- defined as people with investments of $1 million or more -- support raising taxes on people who earn $1 million or more in income, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The survey seems to reflect the sentiments of groups like Patriotic Millionaires, an organization of wealthy citizens that has urged the government to impose higher taxes on people like themselves. It also echoes the policy recommendations of President Obama, who has called for revisions to tax law that would levy a tax rate on millionaires at least as high as that experienced by middle-class earners.

And, of course, the survey hearkens back to Warren Buffett, the billionaire investor who galvanized a conversation about taxing the wealthy with a widely read New York Times Op-Ed this summer.

Spectrem's findings also seem to indicate that the grim state of the American economy -- where jobs are scarce, investment has fallen off and wages for most have flatlined -- hasn't escaped the notice of the country's more comfortable citizens.

The WSJ quotes Spectrem's George Walper as saying, "What this tells us is that there are a number of wealthy folks who said: 'Gee, we need to increase taxes to stimulate the economy. No one likes to be taxed more, but the reality is maybe it has to be done.'"

While some conservatives argue that higher taxes for the rich would discourage investment and slow economic growth, analysts have suggested that in fact this is not likely to happen. Historically, there is almost no correlation between high tax rates for the rich and a struggling national economy.

Earlier this month, a CBS News poll found that 64 percent of all Americans think millionaires should pay higher taxes -- a percentage nearly the same as the rate of millionaires in Spectrem's poll who feel the same way.

The debate over whether affluent Americans are insufficiently taxed comes during a moment when hundreds of thousands of people nationwide have taken to the streets under the banner of the Occupy movement, which is protesting, among other things, the vast income gap between the highest 1 percent of earners in the U.S. and the other 99 percent.

This week, the Congressional Budget Office released a report showing that income for the richest 1 percent of Americans grew by 275 percent between 1979 and 2007 -- compared with a rate of growth of just under 40 percent for most of the middle class. Last year, the median annual wage for U.S. workers was $26,364 -- meaning that 50 percent of Americans who earn a paycheck make less than that.

Income inequality in America has risen to such levels that the country now ranks on par with China, Uganda, Rwanda, Serbia and Cote d'Ivoire in terms of the gap between its richest and poorest citizens.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this post misstated that the U.S. median income fell to $26,364. The U.S. annual median wage fell to $26,364.

Guess what- none of my wealthy friends have raising taxes on the wealthy as their number ! priority-until and unless our gov't cuts spending and go's to a balanced budget. I'll pay more if the gov't spends less!

Socialism ! ? We seem to be living in 'Communist America' right now! It has also been reported that an overwhelming majority support this so-called millionaire's tax; I think it represents a small measure at attempting to level the playing field for all Americans. Where is America's democracy? I really cannot understand this. Now, that America is being controlled by the powerful few, isn't that a communist dictatorship? Does anyone know how we Americans can let "the establishment" know "we are tired of eating stale leftover cake"! Who do I call ?
Unless this changes soon, there will be a revolt in this county! It really is getting ridiculous.

Not good enough for republicans. Their manta is more more more. Their greed obviously wasn't satisfied after decades of prosperity.

Let me guess- you are not self employed-you aren't exactly a high achiever- you make less actual income than I annually pay in income tax- oh I you are all in favor of the wealthy paying your way! And hmm- I'll bet you don't give anything to charity-why would you-you are already getting charity!

Once again the people have spoken and they do not agree with the GOP. How long will it take the voters to decide to elect people who intend to do what a majority of Americans want?

If you think raising taxes on the wealthy is going to balance our budget... You are high. We could look at the counrties who have higher taxes than us; are any of them not in debt? Socialism creates debt. Time magazine was right. We ARE all socialists now. Can't wait for the Gulags.

Heres the "debtor nations." Taxation = more spending = more debt. http://www.cnbc.com/id/30308959?slide=1

Btw, countries with higher taxes, have higher debt to GDP. Raising taxes wont solve anything, but will give federal government more power to show favortiism to their donors(Big Biz and unions) But It also gives the opportunity to buy votes. You can't do that in a republic. We are now a democracy.

When taxes were higher the nation was better off financially.
Now only the wealthiest are better off financially.
02:12 PM on 10/29/2011
When the nation was spending less, we were better off financially. You really need to do some homework. Taxation does not cause prosperity. Prosperity may happen in spite of high taxation. When the country spends less, there is less need for taxation. You really want to thieve you way into prosperity? I say we be free from coercion, tyranny, freedom to chose my own life, without a permit. We subsidize poverty, we subsidize failing businesses, we subsidize health care, we subsidize education, and its all gotten more expensive. That mean taxes. Taxes means more subsidies, meaning more programs.
If you wanna look at income inequality, look at the Federal Reserve and our inflation. Our currency is worthless. Our central banking system creates bubbles, then they pop all over the poor, and the rich reap the benefits. Do some research. Your money is not your own. You are owned.
04:16 AM on 10/29/2011
You don't know what socialist means.. look it up..
Of course raising taxes on the wealthy won't balance our budget alone, though without the Bush tax cuts we'd have about $1 trillion less debt.

Countries with higher tax don't have higher deb to their GDP.
Germany, Sweden, Finland all have higher taxes and less debt than we do.

Haha... Of course they have less debt than we do. We are a bigger country, with a larger federal responsibility(which I am against), with welfare, corporate welfare, departments that don't matter, states that don't take care of themselves, wars that are unconstitutional, an empire that needs maintaining, and a mixture of bum youth and hippie burnouts who thing taxes create prosperity. That, my friend is all ingredients to the end of an empire. We ARE socialist, no matter how you slice it, with a sliver of corporatism. I am aware of the definition of socialism, and we are reaping what we've sewn. See you in the gulags.

You might want to check your numbers again. Germany is much higher than the US in external debt to GDP ratio, which is the numbers that really matter.

A surtax on incomes above one million dollars per year sounds good to me. Make it temporary, say five years.

When the Nation has righted itself, growth of the economy will balance expenditures by Congress and the White House. We are so far in debt that drastic action is needed for now.

I'm puzzled--When the 68% of millionaires agree they should pay more taxes, why would the repubbies bark at that? I mean it's not even like they're one of the 32% millionaire's in the minority opposing. Weird.

Seems the only ones who don't agree with this idea are Republican/TP politicians and their followers themselves. Looks like the majority of Americans, from top to bottom, in every category but the tip top, want these taxes to be raised. Once again, Repubs are utterly unwilling to listen to the will of the people.
12:08 PM on 10/28/2011
Everyone who isn't a millionaire wants millionaires to pay more taxes.

Just a stunning conclusion, eh?

wrong. 68% of millionaires polled want to pay more. Recently American express polled their mambers who had incomes of $100K plus, and they returned the same approximate percentage of people who think their taxes should be raised too.

Kinda wipes the floor with that bumper sticker.

The only people who seem to favor lowering taxes on the wealthiest are elected republicans and corpostooges like the ones who post here. Millionaires by a large margin are more responsible to the society that enabled them to become millionaires.

its easy, change the tax law to create more immediate deductions from investment, to get the economy going.
lets say someone could deduct 100% the first year of improvements to rental property, or companies could deduct 100% the first year all capital improvements......that will create jobs.

Jobs are created when there is demand. Giving Corporations/rich more money does not create jobs. We've had decades of empirical evidence to show supply-side, trickle-down economics doesn't work. It only makes the rich richer.

A useful corollary to this: look how many of the companies are using their record profits to buy back stock -- not investing in R&D or raise wages or fund pensions -- so again, they are using their largely taxpayer driven windfalls to enrich themselves and making no contribution to society in the process.

giving corporations would create jobs....after katrina, the gulf was rebuilt rapidly because of the gozone policies....100% deduction.....we have also had decades of the most prosperous time in our history that came to end after a housing bubble popped....both sides inflated the bubble in their own way. as far as demand goes, there is plenty of demand that is filled every day, the variable is who fills it.

One reason why the rich may choose to pay more taxes is that it might be in their own self interest to invest in their source of income. Namely, if our nation's infrastructure improves, logistics and communications become cheaper (lowering cost and increasing profit); if our nation's educational system improves, more qualified applicants compete for jobs (perhaps leading to less cost per employee). While the latter example, if realized, may not increase middle class incomes, it could stabilize or increase the size of the middle class. The former example would benefit everyone.
