Mount Rainier Shadow Cast On The Clouds At Sunrise (PHOTO)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 10/27/11 07:31 PM ET   Updated: 10/27/11 07:32 PM ET

Usually it's the clouds that cast a shadow on the ground, not the other way around.

Wednesday morning, Seattle area residents were treated to this spectacular sunrise as the first rays of light hit Mount Rainier before reaching the sky. The cloud cover provided the perfect canvas for Rainier's shadow, making it almost seem like a smoking volcano.

Conditions have to be just perfect for this sight to even occur.

From KOMO News:

It only happens when the sun rises farther to the south as we head toward the winter solstice and has to be in the exact position to where Rainier blocks the first rays of morning light.

A Discover Magazine blog adds, "Mt. Rainier is a volcano, climbing to a height of over 14,000 feet (4300 meters). There are no other mountains anywhere near that height nearby, so it’s really prominent in the landscape."

You can see more spectacular user-submitted photos of the event from KOMO here.

This shadow isn't the only stunning image taken of nature recently. Check of this photo of a double rainbow over London, and this NASA footage of Earth taken from 220 miles away.

I love when news organizations try to explain science...the almost always get it wrong.

From KOMO News:

"It only happens when the sun rises farther to the south as we head toward the winter solstice and has to be in the exact position to where Rainier blocks the first rays of morning light."

Actually it happens every time the sun is unobstructed and low on the horizon and there is cloud cover with a cloud ceiling above the height of the mountains 14,000 feet, but it may not be seen from every vantage point because of the position of the observer and the position of the shadow that is cast. There is nothing rare about this event however it is certainly beautiful and a wonderful photograph of it.

The headline I clicked on read, "You Won't Believe What's Going On In This Photo"

Since I do believe what's going on in this photo, does that mean I get my money back?

I live at Joint Base Lewis McChord in WA. We have a great view of Mt. Rainier from the house. I actually saw this as my kids and I were leaving the house. I wanted to turn around and get my camera and I didn't. This will teach me to slow down every once and enjoy.

It looks great, at least there was one day when it wasn't raining. To give you an idea how much it rains here. Look closely at the mountain, the dark areas are rock formations, all that white, guess what it is? Snow, anywhere from 1 foot to several hundred feet deep! And what is snow? Frozen RAIN!!!!

Mt Rainier National Park has some of the largest trees outside of Sequoia in California. Doug fir and western red cedar. It's an amazing place !
