Nitehawk Cinema To Legally Serve Alcohol

Finally! Booze Comes To A Theater Near You

The night has finally come! No longer will one need to surreptitiously brown bag their drinks when hitting up the movies. Because starting Thursday at midnight, Nitehawk Cinema will offer its first legal drink for moviegoers to bring to their theater seats.

The popular Williamsburg theater has expanded its liquor license and will celebrate with an appropriately chosen screening of Johnny Depp's new film "Rum Diary." Nitehawk is the first in New York state to do so, after owner Matthew Viragh hired a lawyer to challenge an archaic law that prohibited theaters from serving alcohol.

Viragh's crusade proved successful and in August, Governor Cuomo signed a bill finally allowing moviegoers to enjoy the drink they deserve while catching a flick.

In honor of the special night, Nitehawk will also be debuting a special 'Rum Punch' cocktail created by PDT's Jim Meehan. Meehan's concoctions have decorated the bartender with various honors including the Rising Star award from Star Chefs and the Spirit Award for the American Bartender of the Year.
