Scott Olsen's Condition Improving: Injured Occupy Activist And Iraq War Vet Now Breathing On His Own [UPDATED]

Scott Olsen

First Posted: 10/27/11 08:14 PM ET Updated: 12/27/11 05:12 AM ET

WASHINGTON -- Scott Olsen, the 24-year-old Iraq War veteran and Occupy activist suffering from a head injury after being hit with a police projectile in Oakland, has had his condition upgraded to fair and is now breathing on his own.

His roommate, Keith Shannon, who is also an Iraq War veteran, first reported the progress in an email. Olsen will still need surgery, Shannon wrote. "The neurosurgeons have decided he needs surgery to relieve the pressure on his brain and it will happen in a day or two," Shannon added. "Scott's parents should be arriving at the hospital any moment now."

Olsen remains sedated.

By mid-day, Olsen's parents arrived at Highland Hospital to be at their son's side in the intensive care unit. Dottie Guy, a friend and military vet, talked to The Huffington Post from the hospital. Of the scene she said, "It's really chaotic. It's a lot of people showing up." Everyone from friends to community activists to "concerned citizens" have made the pilgrimage to Highland, she said.

Outside, Guy counted 10 reporters and two or three TV trucks. The previous day, another friend and Iraq veteran, 27-year-old Jordan Towers, said there were 60 people at the hospital waiting for word about Olsen.

His injuries, which were caught on tape and posted to YouTube, caused public outrage. On Wednesday night, Occupy activists from all over the country marched in support of Occupy Oakland and Olsen. His name even became a Twitter hashtag.

The fallout over the Oakland Police Department's razing of Occupy Oakland's encampment and the brutal clashes that followed. Olsen's friend Jordan said he was at the march as well. Although he did not see his friend that night, he said the police were out of control. "It's been really disgusting to see them fire indiscriminately into a peaceful crowd," he said. "Being in the military, I know about escalation of force. The police started out at a higher rate of that escalation of force than what was necessary."

At a Wednesday news conference, Police Chief Howard Jordan said the Olsen case would be investigated "as vigorously as a fatal police shooting," according to a CBS news account. "It's unfortunate it happened," Chief Jordan said. "I wish that it didn't happen. Our goal, obviously, isn't to cause injury to anyone."

Mayor Jean Quan has vowed to hold the police accountable and said that she would "personally monitor" the investigations into the incidents.

Tonight, Guy and Towers say an "International Solidarity Vigil For Scott Olsen" has been planned for 7 p.m. at 14th Street and Broadway near Occupy Oakland's original encampment at Oscar Grant Park. According to the Facebook page set up for the event, as of 6 p.m. EST, 255 people plan to attend. Vigils have been confirmed for Austin, Texas, New York City, Tampa and Wenatchee, Wash., among other cities.

A press conference will be held at 5:10 p.m. Thursday at the hospital, according to Guy. Of Olsen's parents who flew in from Wisconsin, she said, they are only thinking about one thing. "Right now, they want time with their son," Guy said. "The family said no visitors."

[UPDATE] - At 7:45 p.m., Keith Shannon called to tell me that Olsen is awake and responding to his mother who is at his side. He can write a little bit as well. Doctors are still expecting to perform surgery on Olsen to relieve the swelling in his brain.

I love how the left loves vetrans who were ADSEP'd for cocaine use. Scott Olsen gave up the use of the title "Marine" long ago.
12:11 AM on 10/31/2011
I love how the whatever you call yourself, loves to negate the actions of people based on unsubstantiated charges that occurred after they returned home. One does not negate that he served two tours in Iraq. Also does not mean he is not a veteran. And finally does not mean that he was violent nor that he deserved to get shot in the head with a canister, and it does not mean he should be refused medical treatment after having his brain fractured. So what exactly here is your point?
10:06 PM on 10/31/2011
Not unsubstantiated. He's been an SB from waaay back
I'm an Iraq vetran myself. What's the BFD?
Iraq war vetrans 99% of the time are viewed as murdurous enablers of American imperialism,
He is a whiny little sissy. When he registered http://web.archive.org/web/20110130113227/http://ihatethemarinecorps.com/
That as much as anything makes him an EX Marine.

Quan and Jordan need to go. Either they were a part of it or they can't control their people. Either way...out.

Thank goodness he's being treated in the best hospital system (USA) in the world, with the most modern equipment and procedures, esp. in intensive care units, and the best-trained medical staff (USA) of any other. If these anarchic protestors had their way, we'd all have primal medical care worse than any undeveloped country today. If they want to see anarchy in action, they should go find a tribal village in the Third World and set up their tents. See how long they last The lunacy of these OWS protestors is fascinating, sad, but maybe an educational opportunity for the rest of us.
12:58 PM on 10/30/2011
have you been in many other countries hospitals?
are you sure the protesters are all anarchists?
Have you been there and talked to them?

Scott protested as a member of Iraq Vets Against The War. Jane Fonda protested on a tank in Hanoi. Both gave aid and comfort to the enemy.

P.S. Being a soldier AND "against (a bogus) war" are not mutually exclusive. But of course, one would have to have a high enough IQ to comprehend this. Apparently yours hasn't evolved much past that of a child playing with TOY guns... Too bad they give guys like you REAL ones.

Wrong. Opposing war, especially an illegal war designed to enrich the president's cronies, is not giving aid and comfort. If that was the case, the entire GOTP would be guilty of treason. Agreed?

In 2010, the Marines issued Olsen an "administrative discharge." Maj. Shawn Haney, a Marines spokesman based in Quantico, Va., declined to discuss Olsen's discharge.

So much for support our troops and thank you for your service in Iraq! We take these kids send the to the middle east to support our corporate interest. The corporate interest are masked as security from the dreaded terrorist. When we are finished using the youngsters we bring them back in whatever condition and tell them you are on you own. We are so hypicrital, we put little plastic magnets on our cars saying support our troops and that is all we do. We don't give good medical care to those that are maimed or suffer severe mental problems! Our kids are used as disposable napkins by our government to support corporate interest in the world! The economy is so bad many of these service men and women have no other choice than the military. This whole situation really disgusts me about my own country!

That is such an intelligent and eloquent retort. I am impressed with such extensive debate skills. You epitomize erudite.

I'll explain that that is sarcasm because it is a weakness of the extreme right that they have no sense of humor and cannot sense sarcasm or irony.

At least most of the time they can correctly spell the four letter words they use, even if that does put pressure on the extent of their vocabulary.

Thank you Scott Olsen for you service. Thank you Scott Olsen for being of the character to stand up and speak out when you see what you believe to be an injustice by excercising your constitutional rights that you served this country to defend.

Heavenly Father, thank you for young men and women like Scott Olsen who are willing to serve our country to protect it. I pray for the protection of them. I pray for his family at this time that you help through this tragedy. Heavenly Father I pray that you place your protective hand on Scott and heal him. Guide his doctors as they operate on him. Reduce and remove the swelling and don't let it come back. Restore him and make him whole again. Bless him, his friends, and family. Thank you again Father for those like Scott who serve. In your Son's name, Amen.

There is something very wrong in our country when a Marine veteran who served two tours in Iraq doesn't get injured while deployed served to protect our freedom comes home and while excercising his right to peaceful protest to standup to speakup about an injustice that he sees, he gets critically injured. There is something very, very, very wrong in our country when this happens.

Scott Olsen is an American citizen who has the courage of his convictions. He enlisted to fight in Iraq to defend our democratic way of life, putting his own life on the line.

After two tours in Iraq, he returned home and, model citizen that he is, participated in the democratic process with other citizens in Wisconsin by exercising his right to protest economic injustice there. He once again protested economic injustice by joining the Occupy Oakland movement.

Our country was founded on principles of equality, democracy and justice, including economic justice, by people who also risked their lives as he has. The Occupy protesters deserve our thanks and our honor, as well as our defense and protection of their Constitutional right to protest. They are American citizens who are fighting -- as other American citizens did during the American Revolution, the Civil War, the Civil Rights Movement, and now as part of Occupy Wall Street -- to respectively establish our freedom, defend the freedom of our fellow citizens, ensure equal rights for all citizens, and protest the economic injustice that threatens our democratic way of life.

Enlisted personnel may be administratively separated with a characterization of service (characterized separation) or description of separation (uncharacterized separation) as warranted by the facts of the particular case.
"Basis" is the reason for which the person is being administratively separated (e.g., pattern of misconduct, convenience of the government for parenthood, weight control failure, etc.). "Characterization of service" refers to the quality of the individual's military service (e.g., honorable, general, or Other Than Honorable).
A Medical Discharge requires a PEB and MEB.
Adninistrative separantions are always done for the interest of the military.
Administrative processing is mandatory for members involved in homosexuality, drug trafficking, one incident of drugs for E-4 and above, commission of a serious offense involving sexual perversion, and felony convictions or a conviction for a felonious offense. If a member is sentenced by a civil court to more than 6 months’ confinement, regardless of suspension or probation, the command should consider processing for separation.

Scott was administrativelr separated from The Corps. Can anyone venture a guess as to why?

And obviously HarmonTerr knows why, if Scott was adminstratively discharged, huh??? If you don't know, why misalign his character, unless you have an agenda. Semper Fi Scott!!! You have a U.S. Constitutional right to protest against the corruption of Wall Street that influences corrupt Government politics, unlike the "chicken-sh*t chickenhawks who love making a profit off of your service in Iraq; the very same that wave the flag, say the right words (pay lip service only), when you and all the others come home.

It would be interesting if HP would once in a while explain why they decline some comments or interject some kind of referee to help encourage debates. Thank God we have such liberty any way.
