Centennial Correctional Facility Inmates Upgrade Their Prison Cells With High-Tech Gear

Prisoners Upgrade Their Cells With Candy Bar Money?

Inmates at the Centennial Correctional Facility in Canon City just upgraded all 948 of their prison cells with some high-tech entertainment gear -- using only the money collected from inmates' purchases of candy bars, hygiene products and over-the-counter medicines, The Denver post reports.

Surprisingly, not a single taxpayer dollar was spent on the installation, but how is it possible?

According to KRDO, the money came from what is called a "canteen fund," and by law that fund can only be used to benefit inmates. KRDO does the math: 22,500 inmates, each spending $2 a day on items like candy and shampoo equals around $3 million dollars at the end of the year. The Centennial facility is the first in the country with this $2.5 million dollars worth of technology in the prison cells.

Each cell got a high-tech kiosk installed that includes a computer with a 20-inch monitor, fast processor, built-in camera, and headset as well as 22 cable television stations, 7News reports.
