Donations To Occupy Wall Street Skyrocketed In Last Three Weeks

Occupy Wall Street Donations

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 10/28/11 04:04 PM ET Updated: 10/28/11 04:04 PM ET

People seem to be getting more and more eager to send their money to the Occupiers.

As the protest movement -- initially based in Manhattan's Zuccotti Park, and now established in hundreds of cities around the world -- nears the six-week mark, the level of cash coming in from sympathetic donors continues to rise. And lately, according to one online payment company, it's not just rising -- it's taking off.

As of October 10 -- roughly three weeks after the first protesters amassed in lower Manhattan -- donors had sent about $81,000 to various Occupy locations using the online payment service WePay, according to data provided by that company.

But since then, contributions to the Occupy cause have quadrupled. As of this past Thursday, October 27, more than $325,000 in donations have come in through WePay. The vast majority of those funds were donated in the past two and a half weeks.

The sharp jump in contributions is no doubt related to the exponential growth of the protests themselves, which have spread from New York to countless other locations in America and around the world.

It may also correlate with police activity against the demonstrators. WePay found that on October 11, the same day more than 100 protesters were arrested at Occupy Boston, Massachusetts donations jumped by more than 400 percent.

Similar mass arrests have since taken place in Chicago and Oakland, although it's unclear whether those cities saw donation bumps following these confrontations.

Looking at the data on who's giving to the Occupy cause, WePay noted some other interesting trends.

Male donors outnumber female donors almost two to one, they found, and while 58 percent of donors have finished college or graduate school, 42 percent don't have a college degree.

Over a quarter of donors using WePay -- about 28 percent -- earn more than $100,000 a year. Another 57 percent make between $35,000 and $100,000 a year.

From a geographic standpoint, the donors seem to be widely dispersed. The average donor is about 861 miles from the site of the protest they're giving to.

Thirty-seven countries have given money to the Occupy movement through WePay, with Finland clocking the highest number of donations per capita. Other high-donating countries include Canada, Japan, Australia and the United Kingdom.

WePay said that the average Occupy-related donation is about $61.45.

Bill Clerico, CEO and co-founder of WePay, told The Huffington Post that donations seem to be driven in large part by online platforms like Facebook and Twitter.

"You see a pretty tech-savvy audience," Clerico said. "The social media sharing is amplifying impact a lot."

Polls have found substantial public support for the Occupy movement. In multiple surveys conducted in the past month, respondents have registered some confusion about the aims of the protesters, but more have tended to approve than disapprove.

Occupy Wall Street, the original group of protesters located in the heart of Manhattan's Financial District, was recently reported to have about $300,000 in donated funds saved up -- a cache that's causing some discord as protesters debate over the best way to use the money.

Look at all the petroleum based plastics they are using, shouldn't they be using free range wool or something? No worry about their impact on the planet seems to be of no concern as they have enough plastic there to fill a truck...big oil corporate made no less. Ironic and hypocritical.

Why not spend some of the donation $ on zero degree sleeping bags? There are some good quality ones that aren't very expensive.

I find it funny that the Union members are not protesting their big shots giving the WSO MONEY from there dues that they collect.
Must tell you something about the membership

As far as the UAW goes, they have been taking money from members and giving to Democratic people running for office, even without the membership permission

How do I know, 31 Years with them , and Glad I got out of that Crooked Union, but SEIU and the AFL-CIO is even worse

Wonder how much ACORN gave with tax payers money along with planned Parenthood
01:59 PM on 10/30/2011
I agree whole heartily The unions should not be giving money to any political party as not all members vote for the one they give the money to. I was a member of a union for 40 years and was never asked to have a vote on whether to donate or not and they should not be donating unless it is voted on by the members

It has felt extra good to use the large corporate bank credit cards to make donations to OWS!
11:01 AM on 10/29/2011
They haven't been soliciting funds. I donated once and will do so often and regularly if they are needing more. They do not seem to be either requesting or having a need for money now. The big thing we can do is turn out with them and support them and wait for "further instructions" They have a huge and willing sea of enthusiastic support out here among us fortunate enough to have good jobs and smart enough to see what is happening inthis country. "Corporations have no soul to save and no body to encarcerate". They have no legal right to exist except for what society grants them, and yet they currently have been granted rights above and beyond that of any citizen. Does our government think you are "too big to fail"? Why are we taxpayers billions in debt for their corporate welafre bailout while they cointinue to compensate their CEO's and boards with million dollar salaried and more milliions in bonuses while they complaint hey aren't making enough? Would your employer give you raises like that if they were in the hole? Support OWS, all the way!
05:01 PM on 10/29/2011
They do not need your money, They got Unions, and left wing unions who give, and of course they have UNCLE GEORGE SOROS , there god who helps them,

They Hate banks, Wonder where the 1/2 million is, LOL

10:01 AM on 10/29/2011
Why not? Welfare pays well.
11:06 AM on 10/29/2011
Obviously corporate welfare pays handsomely. We are billions in debt in this country to pay for the underleveraging and bad investments of our big banks while they continue to hand out million dollar salaries and million dollar bonuses, and billions in golden parachutes to failed CEO's and execs and then cry they need more of your tax monrey to survive. Save capitolism and reign in this abuse of our tax dollars to these incompetent and souless banks and corporations. Reinsititute Glass Steagle so they cannot continue to gamble with your savings, pensions and 401K's.

do they really think this is Big Money...? I would hardy call these donations a flood of money...pretty pathetic actually..even when coupled with the other half a million or so previously reported here on HP..

If the folks doing the protests around the country got people to sponsor them..and collected $15 per protester you'd have more money...

Lets just call the financial backing what it is....Disappointing..
08:56 AM on 10/29/2011
If you want to eat steak every meal...disappointing. If you are a member of OWS, you are happy with peanut butter and crackers....that is the difference between the haves and have nots..........50% of workers earn less then 27 thou a year.....that is poverty wages.
11:13 AM on 10/29/2011
Well put. They have the backing of those earning very little who are making huge sacrifices to give what they are. As a poster elsewhere commented, $5.00 is a gallon of milk and eggs or a hamberger helper meal for 4. It takes A LOT of $5 sacrifies to get to half a million. For the big corporations, this isn't even a decent bonus for one exec, of course.

The fright wing does not get it. They opened up the money train and it is about to run over them. They right wing is so despised in this country that any group the right opposes will get tons of money thrown at them. The difference is the money will have no strings attached. Change we can believe in.
11:16 AM on 10/29/2011
They underestimate how much we despise them, too. It's the kind of emotion that allows the huge sacrifice of time and comfort that these protesters are enduring on behalf of their country.
They are truly the lightening rod for those of us who have felt so alone and helpless as our country has been destroyed by the selfish and shortsighted of both parties.

I'm 43 and still recovering from surgeories..one of which was a a very complicated word for cutting about 8 inches of my intestines out and resewing them together. I was thinking maybe a hunger strike might be in order and do me good anyway ( if I can still take pain meds :)
I will strike to end the wars ALL of them ( even the ones Obama is not calling wars) ok except the "support and training" in Africa ( he can keep that one,it's just )
and take these children talked about in article below to a safer country, and give them hmmm maybe 10 million each to live on
THIS is what our money has gone to..THIS is PART of why the 99 are hurting.BUT,Ending all the wars and nation building is NEVER on the table..instead they'd rather cut us.

There will be plenty of ways for everyone who cares to participate and pitch in - even if you're not up to physical hardship this coming winter will pose. Everyone should focus on doing what they can do best - and the young, very heary and healthy will take on the more physically demanding challenges.

If you have money, donate. If you have access to or are able to make/create supplies - they will be needed - from clothes and blankets to food, toiletries, cleaning supplies, batteries - the list is endless.

Write letters to congress, to the editor, to businesses. Boycott businesses on the wrong side of history and morality. Support those that do the right thing. Form support groups and brainstorm new ideas and creative ways we can carry this message forward. Hold a bake sale or neighborhood garage sale or other fundraising event. Use your imagination, your committment and your genuine outrage and put them all to good constructive use.

Remember: "We can make it happen."

Wow. Big bucks! What’s that work out too, about 30 cents per person per hour?

When you are living on $20, 000 or less a year as many of these young people are ( and paying at leats 10% of it in taxes of various kinds), $5.00 is a big deal. It's eggs and milk for a week, Money Bags.

Send money to OWS rather than to politicians or political parties. There is a chance your donation to OWS will make a difference when we all know that contributing to traditional political parties won't.

I made that same decision .... no more money to politicians... it is a complete waste!

I'll probably send to both, particularly Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, but I will curtail it to many others and will be very glad to continue to support OWS as they need it.

i feel sorry for those of you whom are so brain-washed as to not be able to recognize the fact that statistically speaking, in all probability, this occupy movement represents your interests way better than our illustrious yet venal politicans within the two ruling parties....unless you are a card-carrying member of the power-elite, whose mean annual income is in all probability much more than yrs.....can't you suspend yr disbelief long enough, and open yr eyes wide enough, to perhaps allow you to see past the propaganda and the ideological programming so firmly in place, which allows you to naively believe this is still a representative democracy...dream on, yr vote has no meaning compared with the power of the lobbies in washington, whom represent wall st, et al, so that wall st now actually owns dc (yes the central bankers are running the show).... why else would they get bailed out at zero interest? why isn't blankfein prosecuted and sentenced like the 'raj', because at this point wall st. is comprised of rogue traders, whom enjoy the impunity granted by the sec....so these occupiers might be yr only pro-active democratic representatives
