SEOUL (Reuters) - Samsung Electronics Co overtook Apple Inc as the world's top smartphone maker in the July-September period with a 44 percent jump in shipments, and forecast strong sales in the current quarter in a clear warning to its rivals.

Samsung only entered the smartphone market in earnest last year, but its sales have skyrocketed thanks to a sleek production system that rapidly brings new products to market. Apple introduced its first iPhone in 2007.

"In the handset division, Samsung has no real rival models to challenge its products except for the iPhone 4S. Apple and Samsung will continue to dominate the market in the fourth quarter," said Kim Hyun-joong, a fund manager at Midas Asset Management, which owns Samsung shares.

Profits from the South Korean firm's telecoms division, announced on Friday, more than doubled from a year ago to a record 2.5 trillion won ($2.2 billion) and accounted for 60 percent of Samsung's total profit, offsetting a plunge in earnings from its bread-and-butter memory chips.

Shipments of smartphones jumped 44 percent from the preceding quarter to 27.8 million units, up nearly four times from a year ago, according to research firm Strategy Analytics.

Apple's iPhone sales shrank by 16 percent to 17.1 million units in the third quarter. Samsung had 23.8 percent of the global smartphone market in the third quarter, 9 points higher than Apple. Samsung's flagship Galaxy line of products is powered by Google's Android software.

Apple sold fewer phones in the third quarter, missing street expectations for the first time in year, as customers held off buying iPhones until the October launch of the latest version.

Samsung shares were up 1.6 percent by 0500 GMT (1 a.m. EDT), versus a 0.6 percent gain in the wider market.

The world's biggest technology firm by revenue reported a 4.25 trillion won operating profit for the July-September quarter, broadly in line with its earlier estimate of 4.2 trillion won.

That was down from 4.9 trillion won a year ago but up from 3.8 trillion won in the preceding quarter.

Samsung said its fourth-quarter earnings could be better than the third, boosted by one-off gains from its $1.4 billion sale of its hard disk drive business to Seagate Technology.

"I am cautiously optimistic on the fourth quarter outlook at this point," Robert Yi, head of Samsung's investor relations, told analysts.

"Looking ahead into the fourth quarter, when industry demand is traditionally at its peak, Samsung expects sales of mobile devices to remain strong and flat-panel TV shipments to increase," the company added in an earnings statement.

Apple, whose iPhone sales account for nearly half the firm's total sales, reported a 40 percent gross margin, or the percentage of sales left after subtracting the cost of goods sold. Samsung's phone division reported a 16.9 percent operating margin, which further takes account of marketing costs.

Nevertheless, Samsung faces challenges as the new iPhone introduced earlier this month is notching up strong sales.

Nokia is also fighting back with its first phones based on Microsoft's Windows software. And Sony Corp announced on Thursday it would take full ownership of its mobile venture, Sony Ericsson, in a bid to exploit its music and video library.

Samsung on Thursday announced the launch of its Galaxy Note mobile device, adding to the flagship Galaxy lineup of products. The device, powered by Android, will square off against a series of new models released by Apple, Nokia and HTC Corp.

The iPhone, introduced in 2007 with the touchscreen template now adopted by its rivals, is still the gold standard in the smartphone market.

Samsung may not have come up with the concept, but it has adopted Apple's breakthrough smartphone idea perhaps better than any other handset maker. It tries to offer the Apple experience at a better price with better functionality.

"Samsung's rise has been driven by a blend of elegant hardware designs, popular Android services, memorable sub-brands and extensive global distribution," said Alex Spektor at Strategy Analytics.

"Samsung has demonstrated that it is possible, at least in the short term, to differentiate and grow by using the Android ecosystem."

Q4 SEEN BETTER THAN Q3

Profits from Samsung's chip business more than halved to 1.59 trillion won, but the division held up well as its relatively high exposure to lucrative mobile chips helped the firm offset a sharp plunge in prices of commodity computer memory chips.

Samsung was the sole profitable firm among major global dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chip makers in the third quarter.

Second-ranked computer memory chip maker Hynix Semiconductor and Japan's Elpida Memory swung to deep losses as prices of DRAM chips used in PCs tumbled about 50 percent in the third quarter.

Samsung's chip business is also benefiting from strong demand for mobile processor chips used in Apple's iPhone and iPad tablet as well as its own Galaxy smartphones.

Samsung expected demand for PCs to remain weak in the fourth quarter because of weak seasonality, while demand for mobile devices and servers will be relatively strong.

"I see some signs that chip prices have hit bottom as inventories are running out. However, we don't yet know when the industry is going to pick up since macroeconomic uncertainties overshadow the demand outlook," said Park Hyun, an analyst at Tong Yang Securities.

Samsung's display business posted losses for a third consecutive quarter on weak demand for TVs and PCs.

But losses narrowed from the previous quarter, helped by strong earnings from the OLED display, which is widely expected to replace LCD as the next-generation flat-screen in mobile devices and TVs.

First tip. Never start a sentence with "umm".
I am very aware of the R&D that Samsung, sharp, Intel, sony, amd etc that spend the hundreds of millions to build facilities to research & produce the majority of apple's components. Who do you think makes the screens for apple? Samsung. Now apple has teamed up with sharp. As for the rest, I don't see you post any links to support your assumptions. Sorry kid, this isn't school. I ain't your teacher, this is the real world. Look up the facts yourself & then come back with more than just wishful thinking.

BREAKING NEWS:

When a new iPhone model is coming in October, most people won't buy the model that's about to be made obsolete in the July-September period this article is talking about.

Sales figures that include BOTH the new major Samsung phone release (Galaxy S2) and the iPhone 4S might actually mean something, but I doubt they'd tell the same story given the success of the new Apple handset.

The Apple/Android fans battle must make everyone in the world who owns either roll their eyes at some point. Apple innovates, Samsung/HTC/Etc tries to innovate even more, Apple blows the competition out of the water with something new, Samsung/HTC/Etc introduce an amazing new feature, etc. I've used both Android & Apple, I prefer Apple but it's a good thing for everyone that no-one, Apple included, can afford to be complacent anymore. It's a great thing for us all that these companies keep trying to best each other. Couldn't give a hoot who controls the dominant portion of the market as long as it keeps competition fierce.

DO NOT ever buy Samsung anything unless you want to upgrade every year or continue to use outdated, unsupported and discontinued products. I was a happy Samsung phone owner (several over the last 10 years on different carriers) then bought a Samsung Moment (perhaps the name should have been a clue) only a couple of months after it became available. It has lagged behind with last update being 2.1 and now they have reverted the Market version back to as if the phone was Android 1.5! If you still have a functioning Samsung Moment with reasonably current version of Android Market DO NOT do a factory reset!!! If you do you will lose ability to access most apps in Android Market. If you have an old iPhone you might be a little behind the times but it probably still continues to improve with further updates and support, even years later. With Samsung major functionality is removed with updates. If you want to be punished for keeping your phone over a year then go ahead and buy Samsung, if you want support over the long haul then stick with Apple. I predict that unless Samsung changes their support for customers with older phones their lead will be short lived.

This is somewhat true but also applies to other manufacturers as well, not just Samsung.

Up to this point, the government could get my cell phone records and try to prove a case based on my location.
I could always counter, however, that they have proved the location of my phone, but not of ME. My phone could have been borrowed or stolen, etc.
Thanks to the facial recognition available on Android to unlock your phone, authorities will have help in proving their case. Thankfully, it doesn't work too well.

Just because Steve Jobs has passed, does not mean Apple has lost its edge. Android can try to capitalize on Job's death all they want, it won't make it so regardless of what they want.

Another "news" source that has just passed on this questionable study from the same people who reported that iPad's "market share" had dropped to 67%. Shipments are NOT sales, and Strategic Analytics method of estimating that is suspect. This is how bad "information" get propagated -- through sheer force of mindless repetition. "If you release it, it will be reported..."

Indeed. And to all the fan droids, if Android is so far superior to iOS, why is it that in a market where the product isn't heavily subsidized and competes on equal footing (cost wise) the iPad outsells all Android tablets combined?
And before you talk about all phones being subsidized, walk on over to the Sprint, Verizon and AT&T sites and see how many Android phones you can get for free with 2yr activation, and compare that with how many iPhones you can get for free.
08:54 AM on 10/30/2011
Brand power is a strong influence, especially if you have a brilliant marketing team and your competition mainly consists of uncool and geeky companies like Motorola and RIM, or Asian companies like Samsung and HTC onto which many people project their backwards views about Asia in general.
11:08 AM on 10/30/2011
One shouldn't confuse what happens in the USA with the rest of the world. In Asia where most phones are both unlocked and unsubsidized, Android does very well.

They did great! Huge growth over last year. About 40%.
Big growth in phone sales. Big growth in their PCs. iPods shrank, but so many of their other products make it redundant.
As far as Samsung, they have no good reason to 'respond', other than just keep doing what they're doing. Oh, and if they feel their IP is being violated, take people to court.

(hint: fudgicle)
09:51 AM on 11/01/2011
please keep in mind that apple's higher revenue is not from more sales but from higher sales price. while apple has the smallest market share they have a higher profit than all their competitors combined. in other words, fewest sales highest profits. to me, that just confirms the fact that apple products are over priced. ifixit valued the components of the new iphone4S at $149. big profit for apple.

Many people seem to have a sentimental fondness for Apple products, but I don't get the impression that Apple has done that well except when Steve Jobs and his innovative thinking was their leader. Striking first, Apple has enjoyed monopoly profits and lingered in the higher price ranges as personal computers, pads and phones became common. The real question is whether Apple can survive at all.

The answer may become apparent as early as the next year.
08:58 AM on 10/30/2011
The farther we move away from 2007, the less we'll care about who "invented" the contemporary smartphone and the more we'll care about who actually makes the best contemporary smartphone.

I predict that Apple will greatly lose its dominance once people quickly forget history and just want the best damn product.

The people who think that Apple deserves a 100-year monopoly lease on contemporary smartphones are idiotic. That's like saying that only Atari or Nintendo should be able to make video games. EVER. Even if the Playstation or Xbox is superior, nuh uh, dun matter! Copycats!

Technology is ALL ABOUT copying. In the end, what matters is who makes the best product.

"I predict that Apple will greatly lose its dominance once people quickly forget history and just want the best damn product. "

Don't you mean "hope" instead of "predict"?

Funny how you jump from 2007 (4 years ago) to something about 100 years!
Technology is all about secrecy, and patenting ideas, then licensing them.
Science is different. In Science, you want to tell the world ASAP about your discoveries, in a peer reviewed journal, for example.
The 'free' Google Android OS already costs something like $5 per install in payments to Microsoft.

Technology is about innovation! Apple has done the best job of it. Period. You don't have to believe it or jump on the bandwagon. You can be a hater. It doesn't matter. The reason we have technology mainstreamed via smart phones and tablet is "because" of Apple. To deny it means you don't even believe your own words.

That being said. I believe that if all production and innovation of smart phones and tablets ended today and 100 years from now we had only upgrades to operating systems and processors Apple would still be on top. Why? Because they innovated the best. They won.

I agree that without Jobs, the driving force, for the designs for these products and their functionality it will be hard for Apple. But to think that a company with 81.5 Billion in reserves and the talent within the machine is going to fail? That would be one massive failure. I see in the future Apple still being the "one" to compete with. Jobs in his short time left an indelible mark on the industry. Most people at that level love to hate him. I guarantee you they want a piece of that pie. They'll "copy" or die. Thye are trying already and failing. Rim, HP and Microsoft can't do it. Who will?

"The real question is whether Apple can survive at all."

yeah... the real stupid question.
I guess they can always decide to make iPods weigh 10 pounds, so people get a better workout, or maybe go back to Power PC processors in their PCs, along with OS9 (it would be 9.3?). Maybe slimming down the iPhone by cutting the battery by 90%? 1/2 hour is enough for any phone call.
This will all be apparent next year.... zzzz
