What does a dollar buy around the world? Forget exchange rates, what you really need to know is how much a basic meal will cost so you can budget for a trip. If you can survive on a burger and a beer, here's what it will cost you in US dollars around the world -- a handy planning tool (and perhaps an incentive to try some cheaper local foods).

When I visited Brasil two years ago I was amazed that beer was cheaper than water. It was a funny thing to see thirsty people opt for beer over water. Eventually, I got in line :-).

I once stayed at a hotel in Seoul and was delighted to find Guinness on tap at the bar there. I had a two pints and when the tab came it was the equivalent of around $40. Lesson learned -- who would have thought Guinness would be treated as something exotic?

yeah Brazil........good cheap beer to keep the masses from thinking about the 6.00 dollars for a gallon of gas.....forget about cell phones...... A average worker outside the cities make about 30 low end to 70 reais for good carpenters.... at the current rate of 1.75 reais to a dollar that would be respectively $17.14 and $40.00 The best deal in Brazil is beer and manual labor......how ever it is hard to get workers because they call the shots here in Brazil.......They tell you when they will come to work.......believe me .......I have been living here for the last ten years. Land prices in the interior of brazil are still very very good. For example I found a place on a river in the mountains with an old 60 year old adobe house that was built on a Jacaranda wooded frame for 15,000 dollars. The funny thing about that is the wood Jacaranda is very rare and prohibited from cutting down. This wood is worth more than the price of the land.

I can't read the chart very well, but it looks like it leaves out Germany, which is the home of both beer and hamburgers (named after Hamburg, Germany). Also, the Czech Republic is known for cheap beer. Burgers are overpriced though, and only found in tourist traps and chain restaurants. I wouldn't call a chart of 20 countries the world.

Where the hell did they find a pint of beer for under $6 in Australia? I can't find one for under $8.
