Where To Go In 2012, According To Lonely Planet (PHOTOS)

Fresh on the heels of Frommer's list of the hottest destinations for 2012 comes a similar list from guidebook publisher Lonely Planet.

While both lists offer suggestions of where and what travelers should seek out next year, only one city shows up on both lists, USA Today notes: London, which will host the Olympics next summer.

Perhaps more shocking is the inclusion on Lonely Planet's list of Orlando, a town not usually thought of as in the same category as other must-visits like Hong Kong, Stockholm or Bangalore, India. The Central Florida tourist magnet made the list for its "lake-studded downtown" and "really good Vietnamese restaurants," reports USA Today.

Lonely Planet has also released a welcome additional list of what it says are the best values in travel for 2012. Some surprises on that list include the American Northeast (made cheap by budget bus lines), Japan (discounted in the wake of the March earthquake) and San Fransisco (where boutique hotels can be had for under $100 a night).

Take a look at Lonely Planet's picks for 2012, and then let us know which they got right -- and got wrong -- in the comments.
