Mexican Superstars Fight Zombies, Werewolves...

As Halloween quickly approaches, here at LatinoVoices we would like to pay tribute to all the vampires, goblins, and werewolves who lost their lives at the hands of the great Mexican wrestlers/superheroes in low budget films in the sixties and seventies.

Sure, El Santo and Blue Demon are impressive, what with their undying quest for justice and short-sleeved sweater combos. But we’d like to take this holiday to celebrate those poor creatures our protagonists so frequently outwitted, outmaneuvered, and out-dressed.

Face it -- it's not easy being an antagonist in a Mexican wrestling film. Who can't sympathize with the vampires in El Santo vs. The Vampire Women whose lives come to an end when they stand too close to a window. Can we honestly expect someone to remember their one weakness? And who can’t identify with a werewolf in a dashing silk button-down?

Forget about del Torro and Inarritu, the clips below represent Mexican cinema at its finest. We hope you'll enjoy the subtle transitions, perfectly-timed sound effects and unpredictable plot points as much as we do.
