Adele Covers Cosmopolitan's December 2011 Issue (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 11/01/2011 3:02 pm Updated: 01/01/2012 4:12 am

We were thrilled when we read that Adele would be gracing Cosmopolitan's December cover -- but we were a bit nervous about the outcome.

Fashion magazines often don't know what to do with curvier cover girls. Remember the controversy over Gabby Sidibe's ELLE cover, which cropped her from the chest up while her cover co-stars (the very slender Lauren Conrad, Amanda Seyfried and Megan Fox) got full body shots?

Adele has gotten similar treatment, including from Vogue UK which zoomed in on her face for its October 2011 cover (see the pic below).

Although the photo was gorgeous, we wondered if the magazine just wanted to avoid dealing with a fuller figure (and finding Resort 2012 clothes with which to cover that fuller figure).

So we were pleasantly surprised to find Adele in fine form on the Cosmo December cover -- head, neck and body. Sure, there's some Photoshop going on, but no more than the average fashion mag cover victim.

In conclusion, sigh of relief. But we're left with the lingering question: what do you think about that Dolce & Gabbana leopard dress?

The dress is a mess. but Adele is a whole different story. She is fabulous, beautiful and talented. I hate the dress but she looks awesome. I am a fan of hers since I have heard her singing. I hope she will get well soon. I am so glad that there are so talented and beautiful women today.
Lovely face.

Both covers are really nice, Adele is a very pretty woman. I am glad Cosmos went with a full cover. She’s smaller than a lot of people in my office.

Beside she has a great voice and when I purchase her last two CD’s that was all I cared about.

Why are "real women" who are 20-30 pounds overweight celebrated? We have an explosion of weight related illnesses in the U.S.---diabetes, heart disease, joint issues. This is a talented singer with a pretty face who needs to lose weight. No, the answer is not to be the other weird extreme, the odd looking Demi Moore thin. We need to resist BOTH extremes.

Legitimate concern for our health, welfare and physical self is "silly".

Explains the soaring obesity rates. Especially among children.

There is a battle in our government over healthcare/Medicare/Medicaid coverage. It might be a really good idea, to be proactive in looking after your own health before you develop a condition that you might not be able to pay for.

The real question is why aren't we allowed to celebrate this beautiful, talented young woman for her voice and musical accomplishments without people commenting on her weight? The last time I checked she is famous for being an amazing singer and songwriter and not for any attempt to promote being overweight. She is a person who also just happens to be overweight. She is celebrated for her talent, and that is really all that should matter to us. It's not like she is promoting herself as some sort of new ideal for a fitness model. If that were the case I'd agree with you. But the reality is she's just a human with tremendous talent whose recent explosion of fame has subjected her appearance to unsolicited scrutiny. Her weight is her business. Her talent and voice is why we celebrate her, and her weight does not make her unworthy of celebration. :)

Agree totally, if she were on the cover of Rolling Stone or Spin or any other music business magazine.

But if you are on the cover of Cosmopolitan and definitely if you are on the cover of Vogue; you are now in the world of fashion. And you are subject to the related scrutiny.

If Adele or any other musician wants to minimize the focus on their looks; stay away from the world of fashion.

she looks fine! whats so heavy about her? its because her bones arent sticking out? i just dont see the big deal.....now her outfit is eh, they could have def done better ....nonetheless she is a good looking woman.

Incredible voice, lovely face. But not a model. "Cosmopolitan" used to lean towards being a fashion magazine, now it is more a "women's" magazine. That's fine. Then, it's okay to have a heavier woman on the cover. Vogue is mostly head shots-- and she is lovely, so that's fine. But that said, she is quite heavy. Great singers shouldn't feel the pressure to be models. And models shouldn't feel they can be singers!! Two different gifts. I **do not** agree with anorexic, sickly women. But "Sports Illustrated" swimsuit models are not underweight. They are unique, slim and special. No matter how splendid your vocal range or how pretty your eyes are, overweight is overweight. Let's be honest.

So to be fashionable, you have to be skinny?

She is not on the cover as a model, she is on the cover as herself. She looks great.

From my original post:

"Cosmopolitan" used to lean towards being a fashion magazine, now it is more a "women's" magazine. That's fine. Then, it's okay to have a heavier woman on the cover."

Pretty, and heavy. They aren't mutually exclusive.

I'd stick with the face shot!
