William C. Millay, Soldier, Arrested On Suspicion Of Espionage

First Posted: 11/01/11 09:51 PM ET Updated: 11/02/11 12:58 PM ET

A 22-year-old soldier has been arrested on suspicion of espionage.

The Army Times reported that William C. Millay, a military policeman from Kentucky, was taken into custody on Friday at a military base in Alaska. He is now being held without bail by the Alaska Department of Corrections.

Millay was arrested after an investigation by the FBI and Army Counterintelligence, according to The Army Times. The Army has not released the specific charges against him. From the Military Times:

A U.S. Army Alaska spokesman said he could not elaborate on whether Millay has been charged, what charges he would face or whether he faces charges outside of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

"Today's arrest was the result of the close working relationship between the FBI and its military partners in Alaska," Mary Frances Rook, special agent in charge of the FBI in Alaska, said Friday. "Through this ongoing partnership, we are better able to protect our nation."

A spokesman for the FBI in Anchorage told The Anchorage Daily News that Millay's case is not related to Bradley Manning's -- the soldier accused of divulging classified documents to a whistleblower website who is currently held in a Kansas military prison. "This has nothing to do with WikiLeaks," he said.

Salon reported that Army spokesman Bill Coppernoll expects Millay to be formally charged later this week in the military justice system.

There is sure to be more to this story of a 22-year-old Kentucky man who followed in his brother's footsteps and joined the US Army. MPs aren't the brightest of the bright, according to military lore. But that doesn't mean he's guilty. I'd like to see more information before declaring him guilty as charged. Hope he has a good lawyer.

I heard the same thing!! I wonder if the government is trying to hide something with the asteriod, FEMA emergency testing (which will shut down all forms of communication for 3-5 minutes) and the Pacific Wide Tsunami exercises, all set for November 9th!!!

Well, it appears that perhaps they are trying to extend espionage charges to include "whistle blower" incidents and/or the release of information "to the public" as being a "form of espionage.

I'm a military veteran of the Viet Nam war, and a patriotic american . . . BUT it appears that the government may be "stretching the limits of claims of espionage" in this case. And they are apparently doing this to "put the fear of God 9and the government "espionage charges" into anyone (military OR civilian) who might release classified information to the public . . . well, to the entire world. It seems that the purported crime may not rise to the level of "espionage"; but perhaps a lesser charge of unauthorized release of government classified information . . . there is a world of difference in the distinction between that and "espionage". .

A few quick notes about Mr. Millay: He came into my office pretty regularly and regardless of what other commenters have said, there was nothing "leftist" about this guy. I am hearing from *very* reliable sources (people who were there when he was arrested) that when his dorm room was searched, there were over 100 weapons found. I am saddened by the news that he has thrown his life away, but not shocked. In fact, out of everyone I have talked to about this, not a single one was surprised. Maybe the military should look more into someones' background before they allow them to enlist, much less make them an MP, and allow them to have access to very sensitive information that they are being accused of trying to sell. This guys' life is over.

Yes, you have some very valid points in what you say . . . esp. that the military should screen recruits more; and that anyone who has access to classified information should have a thorough background and security screening. If, as you say, almost no one was surprised at what has happened, then there appears to have been a failure of a lot of people (military personnel0 to report this guy to his superiors, right? (Isn't that similar to the military psycharitrist who shot and killed those other military personnel?) It appears that many militry personnel are reluctant to report suspicious personnel. That is a partial cause of these incidents.

Another low-level, know-nothing "Hero Freedom Fighter" wannabe trying to make a name for himself. Well, he sure did that!!

Wonder how long it's gonna take the left to turn this genius into a martyr?

sks504 and your ilk: The political makeup of the military usually matches that of the non-military population. In other words, their are just as many on the left as on the right and in the middle. I was a lielong Republican who is not in the Center (thanks to the GW Bush disaster). I am also a retired military intelligence analyst who held very high clearances.

If this soldier did as is claimed, he is no hero to the Left, Center or Right. He is a traitor to the military and to the USA.

Hard time in a military prison is not pretty. Need more of this for the worst of the worst of our prison population.

If you can not talk about why you arrested him, you are covering up something.
