YouTube Beats Facebook As Top Teen Social Media Brand

What's The #1 Social Media Brand For Teens? Hint: It's Not Facebook

According to a new poll, YouTube is the most popular social media brand among American teens -- beating out Facebook for the top spot.

Considering that 48 percent of 18-34 year olds check Facebook as soon as they wake up, the statistic is surprising, but it makes sense: over 2 billion videos are viewed on YouTube every day.

Many of the most popular YouTube channels target young people: internet powerhouse Shane Dawson has the fifth most subscribed channel of all time and in 2010 was the highest grossing YouTube star at $315,000. Dawson's subscribers are teenagers. In terms of young users, the list of current teen idols who got their start through YouTube is growing every day: Justin Bieber, Greyson Chance, Rebecca Black, and Cody Simpson were all YouTube-made, to name a few.

More than 5,000 Americans ages eight to 24 participated in the study, which also ranked other youth brands, such as TV Programming, where Nickelodeon beat Disney, and soda brands, where Sprite beat Coca Cola.
