Asteroid Passing Earth

On November 8th, Earth will have a close encounter with a sizable asteroid. But not too close, thankfully.

The asteroid, designated 2005 YU55, will pass Earth at a distance of about 325,000 kilometers, just inside the orbit of the moon. Asteroids come that close frequently, but 2005 YU55 is notable for its dimensions: 400 meters in diameter. NASA says the asteroid is the size of an aircraft carrier, but it's actually even larger.

The last time an asteroid this big came this close to Earth was 1976, and it looks like it won't happen again until 2028. So astronomers are taking the rare opportunity to study a hefty asteroid without having to send a craft into deep space. Scientists will use two of the largest radio telescopes on the planet, one in California and one in Puerto Rico, to make radar images of the asteroid.

Comets and asteroids preserve the building blocks of the planets. And studying them up close provides clues to how planet Earth came to be. So visitors such as 2005 YU55 are welcome—as long as they keep a respectful distance.

Were I to pontificate,
About a careless asteroid,
I would only beg of you,
All your weighty sins to void.

Science masters do tell us,
Something fell hard from heaven,
And grasses became ice fields,
And very well could again.

Just curious... if this asteroid is not a threat, then why are governments around the world, particularly the US and Australia, stockpiling coffins and body bags by the millions in numerous locations? (The US just ordered another 14 million body bags) Why is China building ghost cities to house refugees and why is Russia building some 5,000 new bomb shelters? What are they expecting to happen? If not a collision with an asteroid, then what? I'd sure like to know! Thoughts anyone?

Were millions to die from an asteroid strike, they would just burn the bodies or use mass graves not coffins or body bags. China's "ghost cities" are not unlike the half-built sprawl around my town, short-sighted housing investments.

LOL..You know.. I was wondering about that.. it sure would make more sense. But it does beg the question why they're doing what they're doing.. Why order so many body bags? And why stockpile coffins? I like your comment about the ghost cities in China.. sure would explain a whole lot..LOL

The easiest way to prevent this asteroid from ever being a threat to Earth is for the GOP to declare that it isn't now and never will be a threat. That should be sufficient to protect us.

They failed to mention that should this rock pass within a certain zone of space, on its way by....the chances of it hitting Earth on its way back from the sun, quadruple. Soooo just sayin, but this one could still have our number....

No that return time is 2028 and then again in 2036. That is what the science community is more concerned about. Its passing close enough that the Earth could nudge it into a different trajectory. In which case the odds of it hitting us in those years rises considerably.....

Thanx for playing though.

"It will not be visible to the naked eye. You will need a telescope that has a mirror at least six inches in size to see it. To make it even more difficult to observe, it will be moving very quickly across the sky as it passes."

We ALL know what this is. It is an all out assault by Marvin the Martin. Earth is still blocking his view of Venus and he just wants this planet out of the way. But maybe his aim is just a hair off.
