LOS ANGELES — For mind-blowing TV, it's hard to beat "The Fabric of the Cosmos."

Teleportation, time travel and the theory of a "multiverse" populated by our dopplegangers are part of the cutting-edge physics explored in the four-episode series on PBS' "Nova." Then there's engaging host Brian Greene, a physicist who understands plain speaking.

Top it off with visual effects that turn complex ideas into eye candy and you've got a fun ride, starting Wednesday (9 p.m. EDT; check local listings) with "What Is Space?" and airing on consecutive Wednesdays through Nov. 23.

Subsequent chapters include "The Illusion of Time," "Quantum Leap" and "Universe or Multiverse?" – which explores the startling, tantalyzing theory that our universe may be among an infinite number of different worlds that form the so-called multiverse.

The challenges of depicting these concepts were as vast as the universe – or maybe the multiverse – and a dazzling opportunity, said Ricardo Andrade, founder and creative director of Pixeldust Studios, which handled the effects.

"Everybody loved it because we knew we were involved in something special," Andrade said of the 20-plus people who ended up working on the project.

A majority of each episode in "Fabric of the Cosmos" includes special effects achieved with "greenscreen" in which Greene was filmed in front of a blank screen and techniques including 2D and 3D animation filled in the scenario.

Greene, whose book "The Fabric of the Cosmos" is the basis for the series, vetted each bit of on-screen wizardry.

Among Andrade's favorite achievements was the "Quantum Club," a fantasy night spot where Greene hangs out to explain quantum physics, which rules the universe on the smallest of scales.

Using multiple, layered camera shots, the sequence shuffles people around the club in surprising ways – making them vanish, teleporting them from one spot to another – as illustrations of quantum mechanics.

When Greene heads to the pool table, the balls stand in for erratic electrons while the host adds some tongue-in-cheek humor.

"He hits a cue ball and in the next pool table all the balls fly off," Andrade said. "Then a second Brian Greene looks over his shoulder, and a third Brian Greene looks over. He sees Brian No. 2 and says, `I want to have what he's having,' and they wink at each other."

Among Pixeldust's most challenging tasks was the depiction of the theoretical multiverse.

"Some universes look like ours, some are plasma, some are unrecognizable. How do we represent something that is unrecognizable?" Andrade said.

The solution was to use bloblike colors "with no shapes, no squares or circles. ... Such a memorable thing, to represent nothing on the screen. That's crazy, huh?"

Each episode will be streamed at video.pbs.org in conjunction with the broadcast.

Multiverse theory is also known as the "Oxford interpretation" of quantum mechanics, as opposed to the somewhat-more-dominant "Copenhagen interpretation" which only allows for one universe to be "collapsed from the waveform" out of multiple possibilities.

People interested in this topic like I am might enjoy reading about John Titor the purported time traveler from 2036 who explained that we live in a multiverse. What made Titor stand out from your typical Web frauds playing cutsie is that he outlined exactly how his time machine worked (and some serious physicists believe it might!) and he made some predictions for our future although not all of them came true -- which is what you'd expect in a multiverse. For example he indicated during the time he was here (2000 to early 2001) that there would be issues about WMDs not found in Iraq -- well before 9/11 and long before the invasion of Iraq was even before the public consciousness. Be careful though, once you get started reading about Titor you're gonna be hooked...

I'm troubled. I wear a beard, so does that mean I'm the evil me? And, theres a me without a beard that is somehow better?

I must find a way to cross the void and destroy this person so I can posses his power. Well, just after I run a bath for my wife.

So far every prediction of modern physics has proven to be true no matter how weird. If the mathematics predicts it, it is proved in time experimentally. There are four different reasons why there may be parallel universes. As far as the current theory is concerned three of these parallel universes can not interact with each other (that's what makes them parallel). The fourth one (brane theory) may allow interaction between parallel universes and hence may be testable.

Even though I tend to believe in the existence of parallel universes (based on the leap of thought that the mathematics allows it and anything - within quantum mechanics - not forbidden will exist) given that they are untestable I think these ideas may well belong to metaphysics (even atheists can have metaphysics) rather than physics.

However, people thought that EPR (Einstein Podensky Rosen) was just a thought experiment until Bell came up with an experimental method of testing it in 1964. Later in the 1980s technology was developed enough so it could be experimentally proven that quantum mechanics is real. I hope we will develope a method of experimentally prove the existence or lack thereof of parallel universes.

This isn't new. I have no idea what's going on with this article...it's just blatantly misleading. This is "The Elegant Universe" from 1999. (In case you're wondering why the graphics and styles look dated).

Actually, 'The Elegant Universe' was from 2003, and this, 'The Fabric of the Cosmos,' is a new series. Blame Greene and his filmmaking team for reusing some of the same graphic material from the earlier series. I suspect PBS and NOVA don't have huge budgets to spend on the latest graphics for this new series. I'm sure some of it will be new.

I keep wondering why there is no science category at HuffPo. What's up with that? Make a deal with Discovery News.

If there are infinite versions of me, then shouldn't one of them have access to the technology to come visit me? I guess it's similar to the "Time travel can't exist or else people from the future would come visit us" thing.

You must not have heard yet of John Titor, who apparently did visit us from 2036. Maybe.

In the parallel universe, your doppelganger has a television. But it only receives the internet.

Maybe it's time to pull a stunt like Jet Li in The One and run around taking out my doubles in the alternate universes to take all their energy into me. The only problem is if I thought about doing it, then one of my doubles has thought about it too. I need to start watching out for me, I'm a tricky bast ard.

If space previously collapsed upon itself to the point of ultimately compacted and inploding mass, it would then convert perhaps to energy and explode in a very big bang, and a re-creation of matter.

>< Mass is represented by the rotated v's. Energy exists between the 2 rotated v's. Matter becomes energy becomes matter. >< bang!
