Student Gives Classmates Hash Oil Brownies, Gets Charged With Child Endangerment

First Posted: 11/02/11 02:54 PM ET Updated: 01/02/12 05:12 AM ET

Pot brownies are nothing new to the high school scene. Recently, an eighth-grader in Denver was caught bringing one into school, and high school students at band camp were caught handing them out to 23 classmates.

Now, a California student, Salvador Palacios, 18, is being charged with food poisoning and child endangerment for putting hash oil in another student's brownie. In the other recent cases, although the students were cited and punished, they were not charged nearly as severely. Palacios' bail is set at $75,000.

Up to five or six minors were sickened, according to police. One girl, who did not know the brownie was contaminated, had to be taken to the hospital. "When you ingest marijuana -- in this case hash oil -- a more concentrated amount of THC passes from the stomach into the bloodstream," Willows police Chief Bill Spears told the Willows Journal. "There is a greater risk of overdosing." Overdosing on marijuana, however, is quite challenging. In fact, it is practically impossible.

Quick Poll

Do you think that child endangerment is too severe of a punishment for giving out brownies with hash oil?

Yes, it wasn't life-threatening.

No, it is completely fair. He gave out these brownies without revealing the ingredients.

I'm not sure.

chances are those students weren't "slipped anything" with out their knowledge.

not life threatening - eat brownie, get hungry, eat another, fall asleep, repeat. a lot less harmless than taking mom or dad's prescriptions.

while i don't condone "slipping" anything to anyone, the charge and bail are ridicules !!!!!...the writer must be a ghost writer as there is no name. reading the "descriptive" words the author has used tells me the author believes the propaganda that began in the '30s. we don't live in the 30s now; bring it up to speed, and do some home-work, and research. all of the scare tactics do not work. educate yourself, or ask someone who knows more than you do.

If somebody has never tried any drugs/alcohol, it could seriously scare the crap out of them when they suddenly get high.

They'll probably look back and laugh, but not cool to do that and waste good product.

If you want to kill someone with Marijuana here is how you go about it.

First fill a car or truck with Marijuana then drive over the person you want dead.

Its the only way.

The punishment is a bit severe, but I do hope he and the others, face up to their responsibility for what they did.

It's normal he charged for pot brownies, but the article could at least provide with the price list and phone number.
We're lacking useful information here..

While overdosing will not cause death, marijuana can induce paranoia or even a toxic psychosis episode (one that fades when the drug effect fades). Particularly with unexpected dosing where a person may not know what is happening to them could lead people to put themselves or others in danger. Whatever you think of marijuana, to give another person a drug without their knowledge is highly irresponsible. For an adult to do this to minors makes it worse. He should have known better.

I wonder how the Willows police chief knows that? Or is it 'just say no' rhetoric?

Overdose in the case of hash oil is a little different than say, heroin. If you ingest or smoke too much high quality pot when you have zero tolerance you can feel sick, short of breath, and none of it is probably helped by the heightened anxiety you will probably feel. I always warn my friends before smoking my kind with them that they may want to take it easy.

Am I so jealous. I had some great pot brownies in HS back in 1980s. Right before a test of all things. I got the HIGHEST grade in the class. No joke, really. I did. Aced the test. Being totally baked focuses the mind. Or my mind. Results may vary. Contraindications may occur. See store for details.

This is ridiculous. While I never condone dozing someone with a substance against their will, nobody has ever overdosed on cannabis. You'd have to eat enough to fill a semi trailer to do so, and nobody can ingest that much pot! The worst that can happen is some anxiety and paranoia if you don't understandwhats happening to you. Otherwise, it's medically harmless.

Unless there are chemicals in it from whatever source.

One little known fact about pot is that as an herb, it is an abortificant. That means that biochemically, if you are pregnant and smoke pot, it may cause miscarriage. I have known young pot smoking girls trying to have children but miscarrying until i told them this. Then they had children.
The question is whether or not the hash oil has some dangerous biochemical activity which could impact someones health adversely. There is no way of predicting possible outcomes since every person is unique. I had to vote for endangerment above. There is no way that one could be sure it was safe, especially with multiple persons and the greater chance of damage thus engendered.

I just googled your claim that marijuana is an abortifactant and found zero evidence to support it, which doesn't surprise me, since I had never read that in all the literature or studies I've examined in the past. While there are reasons to avoid using marijuana under certain circumstances, it's no more dangerous than monster drinks or coffee, and certainly less dangerous than tobacco, alcohol or almost e ery prescription drug.

i'm going to guess it was listed as such in an Herb book as i had several at the time. Jethro Kloss, at least three others. I had used them to help a friend get rid of his heartburn for example. He'd had it with every meal for the last seven years and so when the herb book said what to do and it worked, i kind of trusted it. Maybe i shouldn't have.
On the other hand i know that some info has changed on the web. When i first read about the Showa Denko GMO L-tryptophan killing americans, it mentioned "over 100 deaths" and stated it was likely closer to 125 deaths or so. When i looked it up on the web a couple years ago, they talked about 60 deaths from it. When i looked it up about a year ago they mentioned about 40 deaths. A couple months ago i looked it up and the statistics were down to about 35 deaths. Another decade and it will have been a boon to health.
Another thing is when i look up the Crichton novel references you cannot get them anymore and the ones you get have different data on them. You can't find long term temperature data for any city for the last hundred years. At least i haven't been able to get any. I don't know which source to trust/distrust most. I will go with the hard copy alternative medical info when possible.
