Breast Cancer Body Paintings Called Pornographic By Facebook

Breast Cancer Body Paintings

In recent months, Facebook's practice of taking down offending photographs has come under increased scrutiny, centering largely around a clause in the social network's user policy that forbids nudity outright. The latest incident revolves around the ‘Breast Cancer Awareness Body Painting Project’, which features photographs of the painted breasts of 25 post-mastectomy breast cancer survivors.

The photographs featured the women’s breasts painted in images that express their individual personalities and address “femininity, motherhood, pain, fear and courage,” according to photographer Michael Colanero. Because of the unclothed breasts, the images were deemed pornographic and removed from Facebook. The terms governing photographic content are:

"You will not post content that: is hateful, threatening, or pornographic; incites violence; or contains nudity or graphic or gratuitous violence."

Colanero was devastated over the images' removal, and the negative effects being labelled ‘pornographic’ will have on the cancer survivors. In an interview with the Huffington Post, he was quick to note that the figures were inspirational, not obscene and that they were not nude since they were painted. Colanero also expressed his views on the complicated relationship between art, nudity and censorship:

“I think the human figure has been a subject since the first cave drawings - are we still not used to it? I don't think one needs to focus so much on labeling something ‘art’ to have nudity be appropriate. We are all humans and all have similar bodies - let's just get past that and talk about what matters. Focusing on the ‘nudity’ is a distraction from what counts and its only a way to put distance between us all instead of bringing us together.”

Most of the media attention the Body Painting Project is receiving is centered around the censorship controversy and less about the courage and inspiration of the women themselves. Colanero expressed his frustration of the negativity now associated with the project, and how it has distracted from the plights and accomplishments of the survivors.

This incident brings up the delicate balance between censoring and silencing. In the past Facebook took down a photograph of two men kissing, a Swedish nude photography exhibit and images of doll nipples.

Facebook's content has found itself on the other side of the free speech debate in countries with more conservative values. Facebook lobbyist Adam Conner explained: "We are occasionally held in uncomfortable positions because now we're allowing too much, maybe, free speech in countries that haven't experienced it before."

But the issue of decency is less clear-cut in America. Breast cancer survivor and model Jamie Inman commented: “With this success comes a responsibility to approach free speech and advocacy for public health in a more cautious and deliberate manner. I want to know how Facebook plans to live up to their responsibility to protect free speech and ensure that an open and informative dialog can take place on their network.”

Take a look at the body paintings below.

Quick Poll

Is Facebook right to ban the Body Painting photos?

Yes. They display nudity and Facebook is not the place for nudity.

No. They are painted, not nude, and there is far more offensive content on the internet already.

Other, see comments.

These are absolutely beautiful. What a wonderful project, the artist should be commended, not harassed.

Sorry - this is part TWO... Read Part ONE below...

The double standard is further evident in that Sport Illustrated fan page literally has a photo album called "Paint or Real" and it even has women that have their BOTTOMS painted. Why do they get a pass but images for a cause and inspiration are treated like common smut. We should no more then they do and we are certainly much less sexually oriented.

There is also probably hundreds of face and body painters world wide who showcase their work on facebook and countless photos of events like Fantasy Fest in Key West. There was recently even an image floating around all over facebook of three older women painted with Bud-wise-er... that was funny though so it is apparently ok.

As I see it facebook is as big as a country and I fail to see these images as provocatie or controversial enough that we need to be hidden from a COUNTRY of people... To claim that our images are being censored and deleted for child safety is insulting as any of our images is more child safe then facebook itself.

I hope MANY of you will add to our voice to fix this injustice... Thank You.

I'm Michael... I'm the founder and creator of the project...

I would like to say that we are NOT asking for special permission though I do think we are a loophole in their EUA. Facebook has many times in the past removed other breast cancer photos - some that contain actual nudity and some that are much more graphic then any of our images. When pressured by the media facebook not only returned the images and comments BUT they also apologized for their "mistake". I find it to be basically willful ignorance on the part of facebook if it's got to the point of media intervention several times in the past and yet they still keep slapping survivors worldwide in the face by removing these images. MOST of these others don't have the voice that this project does and they are simply deleted silently.

I was also recently made aware of a situation that required change.org to mount a petition with 186 THOUSAND signatures and took TWO MONTHS to force facebook to remove "Pro-Rape" group pages... Yet our survivor images were deleted nearly in the first 24 hours after being put online. How can those images be repeated over and over for months and still be allowed while possibly less then a handful of reports of our images and they are pulled immediately.

I think this project is beautiful, but then I am an artist. I could not possibly see any pornography in this photos! For FB to allow a pro-rape group to exist on their site for as long as it did is appalling. Personally, I am offended by their allowing the F--- word used so casually by many posters. To censor the breast cancer photos and allow the most extreme profanity is backward, IMHO.

I don't see where facebook could find this offensive. I know a lady who had it and she is a pretty as ever. She did not opt for surgery but is just as radiant. Someone in my building opted for surgery as she felt it was good for her- so be it.
I lost a tooth but I'm sure losing your breast is much more of a trauma. I'd tried to replace it- but it failed. Now I don't even care about it because it's a part of me.
This is not porno- just Art. It seems people are afraid these days to be who they are. You can't even try and save a dying bird without the possibility of being a target. So if I draw a photo of a mermaid I'll be commiting a crime?

Please tell more about your reference to being a target for trying to save a dying bird. Thank you.

This is a true story on the today show about a lil girl who tried to save a woodpecker. A US forest person saw her in the public w/ the bird and called authorites and her Mom got a big fine. If your on the beaches in WA State you can't help a dying- distressed seal. You are taking a risk if a hummer falls from a tree and you can't put it back & you try to help it. However in my case I called a Vet and he directed to me to The Hummingbird lady- Jean in Lomita. I followed her directions on the transport. As before I'm an apartment manager and there is laws in CA regarding, skunks, birds and the like. Just something for everyone to be aware of.

We all know government is more than ever involved. It use to be when you got a ticket out front of your property- you were for-warned about the timing change. Even though my last building let me know and put signs up it wasn't enough for Torrance. Still I did go down there and write a letter- however I'm sure folks like me have an attitude of why care? The city did write down my name and then told me they don't have to give warning about change of time. I told my residents to watch this because they have no recourse.
What I'm getting at is no different in the case of a bill I paid over and over- the office actually owed me a credit.
Then I got a letter I was reported to collection agency. I did get it off but had to fax all the paperwork involved- also I sent their office a packet certified. I then got a check in the mail- refund from establishment. I also reported it to Blue Cross since it had been going on for over (2) years.
All this is a hassle but if more people do it change can happen.

While I don't find it offensive and can understand the point. I also can't blame Facebook either since it is in there user agreement that everyone has signed to be able to use Facebook in the first place. And it does clearly violate the EUA.
07:02 AM on 11/08/2011
You are correct about the EUA's and they have the right to delete the violators. I think FB needs to be a little more consistent about their EUA and start removing all the Porn sites that are very easily accessible. These pages and their content have been reported repeatedly. I don't agree that it "CLEARLY VIOLATES" the EUA. There is nothing pornographic about the pictures and you can not see anything close to "nude" in comparison to many pages that are left up of young girls with their tops so small and see through that you can see more on those pages. If Painted Boobs aren't aloud on FB then get rid of all of the inappropriate photos and VIDEOS!!!!!!!
08:50 AM on 11/08/2011
As I wrote in my blog, "Some people see pornography in the crotch of a tree," so I won't debate the relative decency of our images. My main objection is Facebook's inconsistency in enforcing their EUA. I know it is complicated for Facebook, but they must rise to this challenge with more equanimity.

Are you freaking kidding me? This is ART, Facebook. Who the heck makes these determinations? A woman's body is a beautiful thing and these women were effected by breast cancer in some way. This is THEIR expression and it is very far from being pornographic. Do you even know what porn is??? Breast cancer awareness is crucial because with self exams and Mammograms, many lives can be saved. Save the Tatas!!

I am a huge supporter of BCABPP as well as a Survivor myself. I personally have searched pages on Facebook last week and came across several pages that are dedicated to pornography with videos and pictures. The pages aren't even private so anyone can go on them. I reported the pages to Facebook as per their policy and as of today......all of the pages are still active and available.
I attempted to contact Facebook directly with my concern and have been unable to connect with the Safety Committee members. If these artistic photos have been removed I would like to have the Safety Committee of Facebook reply to me with an explanation on why these pages are still available and listed under "Sports Page". If one picture needs to be removed then be consistent and remove the actual pornography from your website.
I commend these women for their courage to model and post their photos!!!!!

Totally in agreement with you. I also reported to FB a person who was obviously mentally ill, threatening me, and frightening me. They did nothing about it. She's still out there, according to my friends, some of whom have been intimidated by her as well.

Hello.  I am one of the BCABPP Models/Survivors. My image is Stardust. Each of our images reflect our own personal stories and/or beliefs. I wanted my image to center around the Cosmos.  I believe that the Universe is elegantly simple, and I believe that every one of us has a place here... A job to do... A reason for existing. I find the Cosmos infinitely beautiful, and this image is a constant reminder that cancer could not steal my beauty nor tarnish my soul. I decided to participate in this project because I wanted to share this message of hope. What I didn't realize when I made that decision was that this project would heal some of my own wounds.

Thank you for supporting us! Please sign our petition at: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/bcabpp---breast-cancer-awareness-body-painting-project/

This from a site that leaves genuine hate postings up for months however many complaints they get about them - like pro-rape groups' postings. Just one more reason to despise everything about Zuckerberg's site.

I find it hard to believe that anybody could have watched that video and then voted that it is inappropriate to post those photos on facebook. Really? People, you need therapy.

Remember everyone nudity is bad but violence is good. This is the America we live in. Religion is the reason for this. The bible has ALWAYS been against nudity but is very violent. You people keep wanting "christian" leaders and these are the stupid laws we get because of it.

A man's nipple is not obscene or nudity but a woman's is. How is this not sexist, discriminatory and therefore against our constitution? Granted Facebook has the right to do what they want since they are a corporation NOT a government. This being said if it was legal in America then Facebook would follow suit.
