Dia De Los Muertos San Francisco: The Mission Celebrates The Day Of The Dead (PHOTOS)

PHOTOS: Thousands Celebrate Dia De Los Muertos

On Wednesday night, thousands of San Franciscans headed to the Mission District to honor Dia de los Muertos-- the Day of the Dead.

A crowd marched through the streets of the Mission to Garfield Park, where marigold flowers, candles and candies adorned elaborate altars, including one for the recently deceased Apple founder Steve Jobs. Participants donned elaborate face paintings and the traditional costumes, and carried flowers, sugar skulls and items to remind them of lost loved ones.

Dia de los Muertos is a traditional Meso-American holiday honoring ancestors and the cycle of life and death. In Mexico, families visit cemeteries to decorate the graves of loved ones, while friends share food and music. San Francisco honors this tradition annually with a celebration in the Mission, decorating symbolic altars.
