Fever Increases Immune System Defense, Study Shows

Fever Immune System

The Huffington Post   Posted: 11/03/11 06:05 PM ET

A new study adds more reason to why our bodies employ fevers as a defense against sickness.

Researchers from Roswell Park Cancer Institute found that a higher body temperature can help our immune systems to work better and harder against infected cells. The finding was published in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology.

"Having a fever might be uncomfortable, ... but this research report and several others are showing that having a fever is part of an effective immune response," John Wherry, Ph.D., deputy editor of the Journal of Leukocyte Biology, said in a statement.

Before, researchers thought that fevers worked by hindering dangerous microbes from multiplying, Wherry said.

But "this new work also suggests that the immune system might be temporarily enhanced functionally when our temperatures rise with fever," he said in the statement, though he noted that the finding should only prompt people to reconsider how they treat mild fevers, and not fevers that are dangerously high.

The secret is in a kind of immune cell, or lymphocyte, called a CD8+ cytotoxic T-cell. This kind of lymphocyte is able to destroy cells infected with viruses and even tumor cells, researchers said. Researchers found that a higher body temperature (like one achieved in a fever) raises the number of these CD8+ cytotoxic T-cells, which means a greater body response against infection.

To find this, researchers injected mice with an antigen and saw how the CD8+ cytotoxic T-cells activated to react to the antigen. Then, they raised the body temperatures of half the mice by 2 degrees centigrade, while leaving the temperatures of the other = mice alone. They found that the mice whose body temperatures were raised had more of the CD8+ cytotoxic T-cells than the mice without raised body temps.

The rise in mouse's body temperature is "similar to that that happens in fever," study researcher Elizabeth Repasky told the Toronto Star.

University of Pittsburgh Medical Center clinical associate professor Dr. Amesh A. Adalja, who wasn't involved with the study, told MSNBC that the finding shouldn't mean a fever should never be treated because too-high fevers can lead to brain cell damage. Parents should still take care to lower fevers in children, particularly if the fever is above 102 degrees Fahrenheit, since high fever can lead to seizures, Adalja told MSNBC.

MSNBC reports:

Adalja also warns it"s also not worth the risk to your own health if you have heart disease, have suffered a stroke or endure other medical complications. "This is not a blanket recommendation," he says. "Secondary consequences to the fever can cause other conditions in the patient to occur or worsen. If someone has a persistent fever of 104, it's a sign of infection, and it"s not just some viral thing you are going to get over."

This is certainly not the first research to suggest that fevers ramp up our body's immune responses. Discover magazine reported in 2007 on another Roswell Park Cancer Institute mouse study, which showed that mice that were heated up produced more immune cells to fight disease than mice that weren't heated.

I wonder if raising the body's temperature by moderate to hard exercising triggering the same exact immune system mechanism? It does correlate, that regular joggers and longer distance bicyclists do not get sick as often as sedentary people. I have experienced it and so have several of my friends.
Could it be that the purpose of the fever is to raise the body's temperature, simply so as to raise the heart rate, thus increasing the flow of blood into and the immune system so that it can increase the rate of production of defensive blood cells. It would be completely logical an increased body temp. serves solely to increase the blood flow.

Great article and this is exactly what I help people achieve daily; a fever. Infrared Sauna Therapy is fundamental to increasing the body's core temperature thus inducing a fever state (increase of 3 degrees) within the body. This is completely safe and sparks the body's natural healing responses. There are mountains of research on a "hyperthermia", however with traditional western medicine it hasn't gained the attention that it deserves.

A high fever doesn't cause a freaking seizure in a child. Febrile seizures happen when it rises TOO QUICKLY. As for vaccines? What a HUGE waste of time. I suggest a handful of you research the CDC's website - find out if it's worth pumping your children full of toxic chemicals for a dead disease? Nah I'll pass.

Oops. What ? One of my co-workers developed a fever. It got higher and higher. The ER people put him into an ice bath to bring it down but it didn't work. When it went over 106 o F he died.
I don't recommend a fever ever. I suggest get all of the flu, pnuemoinia, and TDaP (whooping cough) vaccines offered. I did and since then I've had nothing. The average Flu bout costs two days work and an office visit or enough lost money to pay for all of the vaccines. Your county health center has the vaccines, takes ten minutes to get innoculated....Al-

It's relatively well known that a fever indicates your body is fighting an infection or some type. For an adult, temps "up to" 104 are generally safe. Anything over that is VERY dangerous and 106 is a disaster. Young children, on the other hand, can "tolerate" 105-106, but i would definitely get a child with a temp at or over 102 to See A Doctor. In the meantime, for adult or child, take appropriate measures to 'reduce" the fever/keep it in check with aceteminophen etc until you get to see the doctor. Do NOT ever ignore a fever

Not all fevers are the same. There's a distinction between mild/low grade fevers and high, acute fevers. The higher the fever the more dangerous it is, but if its low and consistent then it can effectively enhance the body's immune response.

Low grade fevers are what the article is about.

I would have liked it if they had talked more about low body temps, a brief statement that temps below 96 is a sign of sepsis, or nutrient absorbption problems and that's it. I've know people that always have low body temps and it's no picinic for them.

The teaser to this article: "Study Finds Upside to Having a Fever"

I believe a school age child would come up with another upside to having a fever, especially on school days. :)

The human mind and body are very unique. Unlike other mammals, humans appear not to be suited for the environment in which they have been placed. Ordinarily humans have less natural protection from environmental and predation hazards, but there are endless examples of people demonstrating superhuman abilities of the mind enhancing physical strength and endurance. Once the mind is totally engaged in dealing with extremes of fear or anger, there accounts people defeating large animals with bare hands. Another popular example; Half naked Buddist priest defy sub-zero temperatures for many hours apparently without ill effect or discomfort. Raisng the body temp, they are able to dry a wet blanlet placed over their shoulders in minutes

Of course everyone knew that this was going on. We just didn't know exactly what was taking place. We just had a vague idea; lowgrade fever is good because that means our body is fighting infection. We had no specific information about how the immune system was behaving. Now we do. For people who practice guided imagery with their body and mind, this is useful information. The more complete the picture is for you, the more effective guided imagery can be. Just my opinion.

How could anyone not know by now that having a fever means you are fighting off an infection of some sort? My grandmother taught me that. And that was over 30 years ago. It is not a bad thing to have a fever. You monitor the fever and if it gets too high, it means it can't fight off the infection by itself and needs help (an antibiotic, etc). so you have to watch it. But, this has been known for.. OMG forever!! This is why not everyone who has a fever runs to the doctor immediately.. And money from someone's tax dollars was spent on this study ?? and it's being treated like it's new news? Every mom who has raised a child knows this because every doctor will tell you!!! a fever is not necessarily a bad thing!..and.. every child who has had a fever will pass that knowledge onto their kids. OMG... who didn't know this?

So true. It's like the study the other day that revealed... that moderate exercise can counteract the "obesity gene"! Not kidding. Next thing they will tell us that eating healthy will make us feel healthier!

You miss the point of the study. Of course we have known for a long time that a fever indicates an infection that the body is fighting. But that does not tell us anything at all as to whether the fever just shows there is an infection or plays an active role. More recently, people believed that the fever played an active role by directly inhibiting the bacteria from growing. This study shows that the truth is that the fever helps promote the ability of the immune system, a more indirect approach. It is good and useful science.

Which is consistent with the results of this study. One of the roles of CD8 cytotoxic T-cells is to kill mutant cancer cells. The fundamental finding of this study is that low-grade fevers enhance the proliferation of these CD8 T-cells.

So there's some truth in fevers helping to fight cancer.
01:38 PM on 11/08/2011
The reason it is a cancer cell is because it can avoid getting killed from CD8 T-cells. So the fever would not help.

I choose to follow my doctor's advice and worry - for me - about anything over 102. Clinical findings are great, but we need to wait until they do more studies and use humans to be using findings as advice.

Great job, Roswell. Hope you find what this means for humans very soon!
