Julia Louis-Dreyfus Speaks Out Against Keystone XL Pipeline

First Posted: 11/03/11 07:11 PM ET Updated: 11/03/11 07:14 PM ET

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, known for her role as Elaine on the popular sitcom "Seinfeld," has released a video urging President Obama to reject the permit for the proposed Keystone XL pipeline. She joins a number of other celebrities and activists who have spoken out against the pipeline, and will be participating in the November 6 Tar Sands Action protest at the White House.

In the video, Dreyfus recalls when Obama said "Let us be the generation that ends the tyranny of oil." But, she says, "Big Oil is still pretty much running the show." She says that by rejecting the pipeline, Obama has a chance to "make good on [his] word."

Louis-Dreyfus asks Obama, "Denying the permit for a brutally stupid, money-grab like the Keystone XL pipeline is a no-brainer, right Mr. President?"

Obama said in an interview this week that he will be making the decision on the pipeline's permit himself. The pipeline, which would travel from Western Canada to the U.S. Gulf Coast, requires federal government approval to be built.

Critics argue that the pipeline could pose environmental risks for U.S. water supplies if it leaks, and that the oil it will carry is particularly polluting. Pipeline supporters counter that it will create jobs and ensure a stable source of North American petroleum.

In September, the Dalai Lama was one of nine Nobel Peace Prize laureates who sent a letter to U.S. President Barack Obama urging him "to say 'no' to the plan proposed by the Canadian-based company TransCanada to build the Keystone XL, and to turn [his] attention back to supporting renewable sources of energy and clean transportation solutions."

I know a lot of WORKING CLASS people who would be back in a job should this come to pass. Do people really think this will end the majesty of oil? It only makes it more dangerous, because now, it will be shipped from our enemies across the oceans! This idiot 'star' is already worth 3 billion dollars thanks to her daddy, so what the heck does she care about the middle class?

The more educated you become, the more alternative-rich choices will fill your life. But if you want to walk, it's probably good for your health.

Baseless ad hominem attack on user. Having degrees in Engineering and Physics doesn't change what energy is available at market for you to consume. The entrenched groups controlling that sector do.

Hey ya know, the next huffingpost will be of some of the hollywood who don't oppose the pipeline but support the pipeline. Ari-what's-your-name? Make it happen?

You still here? Vamoose

She's the daughter of a Billionaire. Maybe she should invest some of that money in alternative resources.

Maybe she does.

Mabey, mabey she does. But her father's company certainly doesn't. It's corporate site mentions investment in Natural Gas, Crude, Coal, and Biofuels, but nothing about renewables. In fact last month they expanded their investment into Brazilian biofuel production to the tune of $4.1 bil. By by rainforest. It's the fact she came out with her opposition to Canadian fuel just two weeks after her father's company's massive investment into Brazilian fuel that rings a bit corrupt.

I wish someone would teach these right wingers some lessons in common decency and manners. They are a mud-slinging, thoughtless and rude bunch, and I think they believe that that the rest of the folks in this country are made of similar material. But we are not.

How about investing all that money in windmills. That way, our oil dependency (while still there) will be drastically reduced and we actually invest our money in something that can sustain us for generations.
That creates jobs as well, you know.
12:58 PM on 11/06/2011
They are very costly, usually subsidized, not efficient and kill way too many birds and bats. The jobs they create are only during construction. They sound romantic but they are not the answer.
02:04 PM on 11/06/2011
WIndmills emit no greenhouse gases. The land beneath can still be utilized -- for example, farmlands can surround windmills with adverse health effects.
Windmills still need maintenance after they are built, so jobs do continue. Further, since there are so few in the US, many would need to be built and maintained - created many jobs for years to come.
In the even of severe weather (the tropical storm in NY and or the recent Nor'easter in the NE) would not impact people's electricity. CT would still have power.

The disadvantages causes by windmills are much less than a pipeline, or drilling for oil would be. Building windmills out of the flight paths of migratory birds would help. But, I guarantee you, way more birds and bats are killed by pollution - look no further than the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

For areas that receive very little wind (less than 10 mph continuously) can continue to use current energy methods.

Do not block the road of inquiry
03:16 AM on 11/07/2011
Once you take into account the externalities, the difference in cost per kWh between wind and fossil fuel sources is only about 6 cents. (http://gabe.web.psi.ch/pdfs/lca/Dones_EcoBalance_2006.pdf) I am willing to pay the extra cost as a hedge against the alarmist projections.

Brilliant!!!

Why hasn't anyone thought of that????

Could it be that it's not cost-efficient and won't work????

Yes, well thank you for bringing your ideas to the table.

Maybe mince a few more words, and spend a little time balancing your "perspective" with information. Intransigence. A good word to start mincing.

Why does Hollywood not protest coal?I'd like to hear from Rachel Maddow on this as to why...because she's smart like Diane Francis of the Financial Post who said "Just to clarify, Alberta's oil sands emissions are currently less than those generated by tiny Wisconsin's coal-fired power generation plants."
12:14 PM on 11/23/2011
That is not true once you add a WESP (Wet Electro Static Precipitator) and a Bag House for cleaning particulate matter out of the emmissions. I'm an engineer that does this for a living, so I know what I am talking about...You people should research this stuff before you look stupid to everyone that knows what you don't know...
01:20 AM on 12/10/2011
Emissions, not emmissions. There is also a difference between "can" (fiction) and "does" (fact). How many plants actually do this now (not 1-15 years from now)? Name calling normally indicates a lack of experience or knowledge, just a suggestion if you want to be credible. I am in favor of any and all clean energy, but it is interesting what does and does not get press and Hollywood attention. I hope the clean coal projects do happen and work vs. being cancelled or fought federally...

As a working Canadian I feed my family with money made in the oil and gas industry Maybe she should look at her portfolio and see just how much money her daddy made in the oil and gas business I guess being a hollywood halfwit qualifies her as an expert in all matters relevant I hope nobama passes on the pipeline in his grasp to get reelected Great then the USA can keep buying their oil from the counties that wish the demise of this once great nation. Try filling your tank with hollywood hot air Julia I know there is an unexhaustable supply of that But not much octane in it James Canada

People work and feed their families doing all kinds of things. This doesn't give you a moral advantage at all.
01:34 PM on 11/27/2011
Whos looking for a moral advantage But where do my rights to work in an industry begin and the rights of people to prohibit energy projects end
03:59 AM on 12/26/2011
Mabey it doesn't provide a moral advantage, but it does provide the person a moral imperative. I find morality quite subjective and any advantage imagined quite subjective as well.
12:01 PM on 11/05/2011
Yes, it is far smarter to borrow money and ship it to enemies of the US to buy their oil. The oilsands are the most regulated and ethical source of oil in the world. Fortunately it is in North America and while we need it let's replace less reliable sources.

Great. More celebrities hopping on the bandwagon of the popular opinion of the moment. We need to end our dependence on other countries for oil. Not only would it put us in a much better position as we won't have to be worried about what country will stonewall us next but imagine the number of jobs that can be created because of this.
08:46 PM on 11/04/2011
"Brutally stupid, money grab." Wow. One wonders how long and how many people it took to think up that line. These people know nothing. Wait...they know what they've been told, which they uncritically accept as absolute truth. No outside information will be considered. In fact, dare to even question these people, and you'll be ruined.
