Android Use Grows In Q3 2011; Google's OS Remains Leading U.S. Smartphone Platform: Nielsen

Android Use

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 11/03/11 07:22 PM ET Updated: 11/03/11 07:39 PM ET

Android continues its reign as the leading smartphone platform of choice among U.S. smartphone users.

On Thursday, Nielsen released its third quarter smartphone report, which showed continued growth in the U.S. smartphone market.

Overall, Nielsen found, 43 percent of Americans with mobile phones have smartphones, while 57 percent have feature phones. That's a 5-percent increase in smartphone ownership over the past 6 months, reports Fortune.

Further highlighting the increase, Nielsen's report showed that in every age bracket examined, smartphone use has increased since last year. Not surprisingly, people aged 18-34 have increasingly adopted smartphones--more than any other group. About 20 percent more people in the 18-34 age now own smartphones, compared to Nielsen's figures from last year.

Meanwhile, the 12-17 year olds and 45-54 year olds have each increased their smartphone usage by 14 percent, while those aged 55-64 and 65 and over have increased their usage by 13 and 6 percent respectively.

Android's market share remains the leader among smartphone platforms, with 43 percent of users owning a smartphone that operates on Google's operating system. Apple, meanwhile, controls 28 percent of the market, and the other 29 percent is shared between BlackBerry, Windows and other platforms. According to a report released by Nielsen in July, Android has increased its share by 4 percent since July; Apple has stayed firmly at 28 percent.

According to Nielsen's smartphone market share report from the third quarter of 2010, it's BlackBerry, not Apple who is losing users to Android. Last year BlackBerry commanded 30 percent of the smartphone market and this year that number has fallen to 18 percent. Windows' user base has also shrunk dramatically since last year. In 2010 15 percent of smartphone users used Windows phones, today that number has fallen by more than half, leaving only 7 percent of smartphone owners carrying a Microsoft device.

Research company Forrester released a similar study on Thursday that found slightly more conservative smartphone use numbers. Their results indicated that about one-third or 33 percent of "young boomers" (ages 46 to 55) used smartphones, as opposed to the 39 percent that the Nielsen survey found.

Older Americans' relatively low adoption rates of smartphones may have as much to do with the culture of the United States, as it does with age. According to ComScore's 2010 Mobile Year in Review, in Europe, people 55 and older are 6 percent more likely to own smartphones than the same age group in the U.S. When the researchers looked at mobile media usage and brought Japan into the comparison, the difference was even more pronounced. Japanese people ages 55-64 were much more likely than either Americans or Europeans to do things like check email or access social media on a phone. According to the report, "The Japan market is perhaps one of the most mature and sophisticated mobile markets in the world."

Take a look at the charts (below) for a breakdown of the smartphone market in the past three months.

LOL @ the video.. Apple Insider..

"It's consumers actually USE their devices more than Android users!"

Yeah, so everyone is running out to buy an Android phone to NOT use it. Sure, I'll spend $100-$200 on a new Android phone, get into a fresh 2 year contract, add the mandatory data plan and NOT USE ANY OF IT. That's my ultimate goal in life.

Next, I am going to buy a house I won't live in and a car I refuse to drive. I'll roll a joint I won't smoke.

The weird part is that these fan boys are serious about it. This irrational mentality actually makes sense to them.

Well, while I have a ban on any Apple product in my house, my website does get 2/3 of mobile traffic from Apple products with Android at 1/3. If you search mobile OS use, it is somehow similar. I think that while many people have Android phone, some have it just to have a phone and do not use it for much anything than phone and text... good example is my wife that have most likely not opened her browser on the phone, or my neighbor that asked me the other day what is the weather going to be like tomorrow... while holding her Galaxy :-)
If somebody invests the $$ into iWhatever, they may be somehow technology savvy people that use most of the features smart phones can offer. Let's face it... with many free Android phones there is no reason not to get a smartphone. Perhaps that is the reason why many companies release applications at first for iOS with Android "to be released soon".

nope... wrong.. most non-tech savvy android (and iphone) users i know just dont browse the web on their phones... they dont want to or dont need to... but that's not to say they aren't using their phones... the whole reason most have the smartphones is for the apps... whether that's music, games or navigation... so judging use by browser is wholly inaccurate...

Apple may have just received a bit of its own medicine ... Apple mobile products may have just been banned from Germany for infringing on Motorola patents

We also have a lot bigger country to get signals to than almost everyone else. That's a lot of rural areas. I imagine the signal isn't that great all over Russia or Australia either.

Still bring in more money with the WP7 marketplace than any other OS-base, although Android seems to be making more hits (not sales) lately. There's an advantage to having less apps to compete with on WP7, it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack, versus trying to find a needle in a sports arena...

Never owned an apple phone before. Ordered an iPhone 4S two weeks ago. Still waiting for delivery. However, I have been reading about battery problems, restricted platforms and compatability with Office applications. Now, I am thinking maybe I made a bad choice. The phone cost me $450 with all of the accessories, however if this phone does not perform as I expect, it is going back as fast as a NY min. Apple better get its act together quick before this phone gets in my hands. Something told me not to do this, but I wanted to give Apple a chance.

The Apple phone is a great phone. Just not worth the premium you pay over an Android. Also, Apple does not play well with other vendors.

it's a good product... but had u done ur research you would have paid less for a Samsung/HTC that gives more bang for your buck... but if this is you 1st entry into smartphone your in good hands..
note: there are many things you can do to extend the horrendous battery life on it, unfortunately it requires turning off some of the better features.

funny.... at work all the iphone users always come to me and attack my Android. Personally, I really don't see any big difference with either one. The guys at work must feel insecure over something stupid as to who has a better phone. There are a million other things to be more concerned about in this world.

BS numbers. Surveys are inarticulate. The real Web traffic and activation numbers show iOS ahead:

Android will cease to exist once Google realizes it will never make money with it.

This isn't even close. Android's so-called popularity has more to with volume. Motorola, HTC & Samsung make a new Android device on what seems like a monthly basis. Yet, a report today indicated that Apple has half of the profits in the mobile phone industry:

http://www.forbes.com/sites/canaccordgenuity/2011/11/04/apple-takes-half-nokia-relegated/

The iPhone just recently became available Sprint & Verizon and if you find yourself asking, "what does this have to do with the report above" the answer is AT&T, Sprint and Verizon sold out of pre order iPhone4S on the first day it became available and that the numbers are only for the 3rd quarter and so 4th quarter numbers will be the real testament. Keep in mind also that Android phones are available on providers like Cricket and Boost. So, flood the market with a bunch of phones (high-end, low-end, in-between) and you can skew/spin the numbers to make them say whatever you want. And for all that Android "popularity" Apple still has 50% of the profits in the mobile phone industry. What say Android lovers about that?

"So, flood the market with a bunch of phones (high-end, low-end, in-between) and you can skew/spin the numbers to make them say whatever you want"

It's hardly skewing the numbers. Apple have chosen one business model, Google and the rest of the OHA have chosen another. Apple chooses only to put one phone a year (or every fifteen months). If other manufacturers choose to put out a variety of handsets that cater to different sectors of the market then it makes sense that, if the product is good - and Android is very good - they will have a larger market share.

As to the 'Apple makes the most profit' talking point - why would anyone think it was a good thing that a company they buy products from makes a huge profit on the stuff they sell? Personally, I'd rather a company made a little less in pure profit and left the consumer with a little more money in their pocket. But that's just me.

Really, what consumer is Motorola trying to reach the the DroidX or Incredible that the Rezound, Thunderbolt, or Evo/Evo3d or Nexus S or Galaxy II, etc etc aren't going to reach?

It certainly is flooding the market; the Thunderbolt isn't even 6 months old and the Rezound is set to release soon, the same with the DroidX that preceded the Thunderbolt. I'll wait for the 4th quarter number, after Verizon & Sprint report the number of iPhones sold since October 14.

Apple sells less phones and makes more profits .. that's called gouging your customers.

And in case you were unaware, in a year there are 4 quarters .. Apple releases a new phone every 4 or 5 quarters and wins that quarter ... Android wins the other 3 or 4 quarters ... that's not a good sign for Apple, unless there's going to be a new law outlawing all quarters in which Apple doesn't release a new iPhone.

Oh well, being observant and having critical thinking abilities is something of which you can never accuse a fanboi.

I'm a very happy Android phone user. I got my phone this summer and have been amazed by how intuitive it is - and it is getting moreso all the time.

But this is a post in defense of Apple. Whenver I think of where the next thing is coming from? I look to Apple not HTC (my phone) or Samsung, or Google or Android. These companies are the masters of "Let's take where we've been and tweak that experience into something more" and not - lets see what the next thing will be. Wearable phones? Smart fabic? I don't know: Surprise me. The reason I don't buy an I-phone is that the phone I have, a Sensation, is a better phone than that one. Substantial build-quality, ergomnomics and feel are extremely important to me (which is why I don't have the Samsung) and after having three iPads crap out on me, I swore never again Apple!es.
