Ricky Martin Granted Spanish Citizenship Amidst Reports He Plans To Marry Longterm Partner

From "livin' la vida loca" to...wedded bliss?

That could very well be the case for Ricky Martin, who was recently granted Spanish citizenship after being "recognized for... artistic talents," according to the Associated Press. Officials confirmed the 39-year-old Martin had been given a "letter of naturalization," issued in special circumstances, because of his "personal and professional links to Spain."

Though the AP says it was not clear why Martin, along with actor and fellow U.S. citizen Benecio del Toro, sought citizenship in Spain, other media outlets have cited a report in Spanish daily El Pais that indicate that the Latin pop star is planning to wed his longtime partner Carlos Gonzalez under that country's same-sex marriage laws.

Martin, who is raising his twin three-year-old sons Matteo and Valentino with Gonzalez, has previously spoken of his desire to marry. "I would get married," he told Larry King after coming out in 2010, according to Pink News. "There are many countries around the world where same-sex marriage is a right...yes, we could go to Spain and get married. We can go to Argentina and get married. But why do we have to go somewhere else? Why can't I do it in my country where the laws are -- you know, protecting me?"

As the AFP reports, 20,000 gay couples have tied the knot since Spain passed legislation allowing same-sex marriages in 2005.

However, Martin will soon make Argentina, rather than Spain, his next home -- at least in the theatrical sense. The star is scheduled to star on Broadway next spring in the much-anticipated revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical "Evita," opposite Argentine actress Elena Roger in the title role.
