The Psychometer: This Week In Crazy

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 11/06/11 08:08 PM ET   Updated: 11/06/11 08:08 PM ET

After last week's zombie attack, we found some new Psychometer scientists to give us a rundown on who went craziest this week. Luckily, they had quite a bit to work with this week. Do you agree?

Love your psychrometer and "batshit insane" is genius. It is fun and funny and right on mark!

So... Do you find that cute Peanut ad offensive? "sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't". Sorry, I just had to ask.

I have come to rely on the Huffington Post to demonstrate sensitivy to marginalized groups of citizens in our country. To use such words as "psychometer", "approaching insanity", and "batshit insane" is a slap in the face to the millions of Americans who suffer from mental illness. As a member of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, (NAMI), the largest advocacy organization for the mentally ill, and as a family member of a grown child with bipolar disorder, I am appalled and saddened that you would demonstrate such blatant prejudice. NAMI has a program entitled, "Stigma Busters", which aims to decrease the stigma associated with mental illness. Stigma and the fear of being labeled "crazy" or "insane" is the main reason people avoid seeking treatment. I hope that you will seriously considering retracting this post and issuing a formal apology to all the brave Americans who are battling mental illness. Would you create such a post that made fun of or offended minorities or those with alternative lifestyles? I think not. Shame on you!

I respect your opinion, but I can't agree with it.

I would never refer to someone with diagnosed bipolar disorder as "crazy," or "insane." Those terms have come to apply to people who are not diagnosed, but whose behavior demostrates an extreme deviation from the norm. If I start trying to do cartwheels on the ledge of a highrise building, that goes beyond cautioning "that's a really bad idea." It's more "you're insane!"

There's also the political application, which is not so much reckless/deviant behavior, as political viewpoints that are off the spectrum--usually off the far-hate end of the spectrum. That's why people like Michele Bachmann, Sarah Palin, Ann Coulter, and Herman Cain end up there a lot. Not all righties end up there--very few appearance for people like John Boehner, for instance. And a couple lefties will find their way there from time to time.

But you need some sort of descriptor for these way-off-the-rails types of thought/behavior patterns demonstrated in the examples above, and "insane" seems as good as any, especially if that same pegorative word is NOT used to describe actually-diagnosed conditions.

That's my take on it, at the very least.

You're kidding right? Since the dawn of time, there have been terms to describe that which is senseless, excessive, eccentric, etc, etc, etc. Crazy and insane are generic wrapper terms for all such things and more, including LACK OF SANITY, which some of the people in this JOKE article clearly demonstrate.

I'm cool with political correctness, but you are carrying it to a level that begs inclusion on the above dial.

I am kind of sad the un-liberal media isn't busy hanging on every stupid thing Sarah Palin does anymore. Its been too long, sadly we probably won't hear anything until after the election. She should get credit for being the inspiration for Kardashians and Snookis everywhere. If you are stupid, don't hide in the closet, go on tv.

They would probably need to be fed bottles of human blood (probably from brown skinned, middle eastern children), and eat human flesh once they stated teething.

With any luck they'll consume their parents.

They need to recalibrate the meter when she's on it...otherwise everyone else would fall off.

Why is it that HuffPo can use (and I quote) "Batshit" as a modifier for "Insane", yet if a commenter uses this modifier for "Insane" or perhaps "Crazy" the moderators summarily delete the comment?

It's obvious, the readers should be allowed to be as intimate and free with bat guano as the writers.

You are right. Whatever else Coulter is, dumb is not one of them, and she laughs herself right to the bank. Which does not detract a whit from the fact that she is out of her sick mind.

She knows her audience. Some people have an instinct for marketing. Coulter sticks with a safe formula, picking her moment to craft a new slogan selling the time-tested "Us vs. Them" drama. With the right blend of novelty and offensiveness, she reduces people to racial stereotypes, as if there were a political point. Meaningless?....Inflammatory?....sure, but she provokes precisely the debate she wanted....an ugly one. One that no one wins.
