George Lopez Talks About His Foundation And CNN Heroes

CNN Heroes takes a look at comedian George Lopez as an example of a celebrity giving back to the community.

Lopez talks to CNN about his charity, The Lopez Foundation which he started in 2009 with his then wife, Ann Serano. The charity was created for "underprivileged children, adults and military families confronting challenges in education and health, as well as increasing community awareness about kidney disease and organ donation," according to the charity's website.

"Once you've been ill, you realize the importance of everybody being well," Lopez said of the foundation and its goal of helping young kidney patients.

The foundation sponsors fall and summer kidney camps for children and their families to take part in a week of activities while receiving on-site medical treatment.

As CNN reports, many celebrities have taken part in the CNN Heroes campaign and attended the annual "CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute" shows. CNN reaches out to them to learn about the ways they've chosen to give back.

"It's not about a hand out, sometimes its about seeing that there's a hand there," Lopez said.
