Turkey Stuffed With Twinkies Is, In Fact, An Actual Recipe From The 'Twinkies Cookbook'

Posted: 11/07/11 02:35 PM ET

There is an infinite number of recipes and iterations for turkey and stuffing. We can appreciate a new twist on a classic, but the recipe for "Twinkling Turkey" from the Twinkies Cookbook has us a bit wary.

In the recipe below, the cake part of the Twinkie is used as a stuffing ingredient while the cream filling becomes a sauce for turkey. For the stuffing, Twinkies and a Hostess corn muffin mix are combined with diced apple and stuffed into the bird. For the sauce, the cream filling is combined with honey and brushed on the turkey during the last fifteen minutes of roasting. Sure, it's a creative use of a Twinkie, but creativity doesn't always translate into tastiness. See the full recipe after the poll.

Quick Poll

Would you eat Twinkling Turkey?

Yes, anything made with Twinkies deserves to be eaten.

No way, Twinkies do not belong in stuffing.

I'm not sure.

Twinkling Turkey (serves 15 to 20)
Ingredients

1 (8 1/2 ounce) package yellow corn muffin mix, prepared and baked according to package instructions
6 Twinkies halves lengthwise
1 (14-18-pound) turkey
1 tart apple, peeled, cored and diced
1/4 cup honey

Instructions
Remove the muffins from the oven and allow to cool on a wire rack. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Scrape the creme-filling out of the Twinkies with a small spoon and reserve in small bowl.

Cut the Twinkie pastry into cubes and spread in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake for 8 – 10 minutes, until lightly toasted. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely. Decrease the oven temperature to 325 degrees.

Rinse the turkey. Crumble muffins into a bowl, add the apple and toasted Twinkies and mix lightly. Loosely stuff the mixture into the turkey and truss the legs. Place the turkey, breast side up, on a rack set in a roasting pan. Roast the turkey for 12 to 15 minutes per pound, until the thigh temperature reaches 175 degrees to 180 degrees and the juices run clear.

In a small bowl, combine the honey with the reserved creme filling and mix well. Brush the turkey with the honey mixture during the last ten to fifteen minutes of roasting time.

Remove the turkey from the oven and let stand for 20 minutes before carving.

I'd like to try it if a friend made it, or maybe at a restaurant. I wouldn't waste a whole turkey on it though.

Only in AmeriKa would somebody come up with an idea to stuff a turkey with Twinkies. Now please excuse me while I go over to that wastepaper bin sitting over there and THROW UP.

I don't like cornbread stuffing, love twinkies but think I will pass on this one! I can't even remember the last time I ate a twinkie, been years but if my memory serves me well, a twinkie is best eaten as a twinkie!

Twinkies are disgustingly awesome. Turkey stuffed with Twinkies is just plain disgusting. Of course, I think deep fried Oreos is one of the world's greatest culinary delights so don't take my word for it.

Believe it or not my cholesterol is great and my BP is 116/72. Why? Because I only indulge in those nasty treats once or twice a year.

I was stunned and disgusted when I saw a recipe for Tiramisu using Twinkies as a replacement for ladyfingers on one food blog, but this?! A very loud, resounding NO! Gee whiz, are we so hooked on sugary sweet, chemical packed snack foods that we have been reduced to eating them in our savory dishes, too? Please say it ain't so!

This is so wrong. I take my Twinkies plain with a glass of milk. Same with Hostess (tm) cupcakes. Once every year or so.

I think of all of the good things I wouldn't have discovered if I had been too squeamish or closed-minded to try something "different". "Try it, you might like it" was my motto since I was young. "No guts, no glory.....that one worked, also. So, bring on the Twinkies.

I'd be curious to know when this recipe was written. It seems like one of those recipes from the 50's when (many) people believed that processed food was going to liberate liberate the american housewife. Ah, the bad old days.

I would have to try it. Who knows it might taste better than it sounds. Can you imagine the first person to eat an oyster? I was amazed at all the negative comments and no one said they had even tried them.

Or the first person to try cow's milk? :P

Twinkies on occasion by themselves are fine but this recipe is way over the top. Now the toasted Twinkies used for a desert base for a fruit filling may be an idea !!!
