Google, Motorola Deal Won't Give Phone Company Special Treatment, Says Chairman Eric Schmidt

Google Motorola Deal

SEOUL (Reuters) - The executive chairman of Google Inc on Tuesday played down concerns the search giant would give preferential treatment to Motorola Mobility Holdings after its planned purchase of the handset maker is completed.

Asia is home to Samsung Electronics Co, the world's biggest vendor making mobile devices using Google's free Android software. Google's $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola, announced in August, raised concerns Google may become a key rival of Android licensees.

"In general, with all of our partners, we told them that the Motorola deal will close and we will run it sufficiently and independently, that it will not violate the openness of Android...we're not going to change in any material way the way we operate," Eric Schmidt told reporters on his visit to South Korea on Tuesday.

His comments were widely seen as reassuring his alliances with handset manufacturers including Samsung and HTC Corp. The two flagship Android vendors are in patent disputes with Apple as the iPhone maker seeks to curb Android's strong growth, which has become the most popular mobile platform.

In response to a question on criticism by the late Apple co-founder, Steve Jobs, that Android phones ripped off its flagship iPhone, Schmidt said, "the Android effort started before the iPhone effort."

"I've decided not to comment on what's been written on a book after his death. Steve is a fantastic human being and someone who I miss very dearly. As a general comment, I think most people would agree that Google is a great innovator and I would also point out that the Android effort started before the iPhone effort," Schmidt said.

In his authorized biography released last month, Jobs said, "I will spend my last dying breath if I need to...to right this wrong. I'm going to destroy Android, because it's a stolen product. I'm willing to go to thermonuclear war on this."

Schmidt, in his second visit to Korea, met executives from handset manufacturers Samsung and LG Electronics as well as mobile carriers SK Telecom, KT Corp and LG Uplus.

He also met South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and said Google will open a channel dedicated to Korean pop music on YouTube, Google's video-sharing website, to help spread the "Korean wave," the presidential office said on Monday.

Schmidt's Asian tour later includes Taipei and Beijing.

I agree with Eric Schmidt, the Android project started way before iPhone's introduction in 2007 as a Blackberry clone. It was around the end of year 2007 it became an iPhone clone.

The evidence for this is a single prototype of a Blackberry-like Android phone, which was revealed after the iPhone's release. A touch screen slate was also among these.

Also, the LG Prada, the HTC Touch, and the NeoNode N1M (which also used a sliding motion to unlock long before the iPhone did, even though Apple was somehow awarded the patent...), among others, were all Touch-only phones that existed prior to the iPhone. The iPhone was not the first, it was just the device that popularized the concept.

nokia invented the smartphone/tablet long before apple came out with iphone. steve didnt invent the smartphone, they just refined it into something that better. other people now have the right to come out with something better than iphone, which they did

steve copied others (he certainly didnt invent phones with touch screens and guis, or the computer mouse etc...) and then he falsely claimed other people copied him. kudos to steve for having a smart phone that sold well, but he didnt invent the concept

Steve Jobs was right but he's already in HADES and is unable to defend himself anymore, wait till Eric Schmidt arrives in HADES, there would be a great "BOXING" match for all eternity.

Who cares who stole what!! Apple made it to the finish line before anyone else. Get over it!!! Just because nobody else compares to Apple thats there problem they should of spent more time trying to make something better instead of wasting so much time and energy blaming others! Lots of people can have great ideas what matters is actually making something of there idea!!!
03:18 PM on 11/09/2011
It's important because Steve Jobs was always so adamant about accusing people of stealing his ideas. If someone came up with the idea before Apple, it would simply end up being another patent infringement lawsuit for Apple to lose in court.

Lots of $$$ at stake.

Maybe now Motorola phones will be useful.

No. Motorola patents will be useful.

Exactly. Motorola already holds a provisional injunction against Apple in Germany. Google can finally defend Android handset manufacturers from Apple's bullying over vague patents.

"I sat on the Apple board during the entire Iphone development. Really, I came up the android ideas myself .... really I did.....".

Here's all you need to know.

1) Google sat on the Apple board until it was understood that Google was developing Android.

2) No other company was able to respond to iOS as fast or as successfully as Google did.

Not Microsoft.
Not HP.
No Oracle.
No One.

So did Google rip off Apple?
Ask Microsoft.

Let's face it, all Jobs did was take the video game console business plan and applied it to i-phones. You have to get the next one every year or two just to be cool. It's simple marketing for the self important. Google isn't doing anything Apple hasn't done.

Hmm, I'm a big gamer and I still use my old PS3 and Wii from 2006. I must be really uncool.

Video Games?
No industry has an obsolescent fashion sense greater than cell phones.
It was so long before Apple came on the scene with iPhone.

I just think it is ironic for apple to complain that other companies stole technology when that has been Apples business model since they started.
