Obama To Expand Drilling Off Alaska, In Gulf

First Posted: 11/08/11 02:11 PM ET Updated: 11/09/11 05:10 PM ET

WASHINGTON -- The Obama administration on Tuesday announced its five-year offshore drilling plan, which includes an emphasis on drilling in the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska, continuing the administration's policy of expanding domestic production of energy.

Less than two years after the BP oil disaster, the Proposed Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program will make more than 75 percent of oil and gas resources that are undiscovered and technically recoverable now available for exploration and development.

Department of the Interior Secretary Ken Salazar praised the program as an important step toward economic recovery.

"Expanding safe and responsible oil and gas production from the program is a key component of our comprehensive energy strategy to grow America's energy economy, and will help us continue to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and create jobs here at home," he said in a statement.

Environmental activists immediately criticized the proposal as lacking proper safety protocol.

"Congress has failed to pass a single law to better protect workers or the environment," said Frances Beinecke, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council in a statement. "Industry has not invested sufficiently in developing the technologies needed to prevent future disasters."

Beinecke also added that now is not the time to open up vulnerable environmental areas to energy production.

"Today, the Gulf region is still struggling to rebuild. This is not the time to put the region at greater risk," she said. "Nor is it the time to open the doors to drilling in the treacherous and remote Arctic, which is more than a thousand miles from the closest clean-up crew and home to pristine habitat for a range of endangered species."

Reactions from Republicans in Congress were mixed. Some lawmakers, such as Rep. Doc Hastings (R-Wash.), chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee, said the administration hasn't gone far enough.

"The Obama administration's draft plan places some of the most promising energy resources in the world off-limits," Hastings said.

Others, such as Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), were more pleased by the proposal.

"While the administration has not opened any new areas to leasing, I'm encouraged that they are moving forward with offering sales in both the Beaufort and Chukchi seas," she said in a statement.

The Department of Interior is required to prepare a five-year program that includes a schedule of oil and gas lease sales. This proposal covers the years 2012 to 2017.

I suppose it is just a coincidence that Mother Nature's immediate response to the Obama administration's opening up the arctic to drilling was the worst storm to hit Alaska in 40 years? Coincidence?

Let's put some handcuffs on the oil. All oil will found at these sites will have a $20 per barrel tax for future environmental clean-ups. All crude oil must pass through US refineries before being sold as finished products to end users. If the price of oil falls below profit levels, the US has the right to pump the oil and operate the rigs for the benefit of the US tax payer.

We are killing our planet. It is a living organism and our pursuit of oil and nuclear solutions is the wrong approach. Insight is fearlessness to do the right thing. Accept the wrong course and continue to pollute Earth, and it and its inhabitants will die. Fight for survival. Know the solutions of oil and nuclear are falsehoods and deceitful. Seek the real gift of insight and believe in good solutions. The time left to do the correct and spiritual thing is limited. Fight to save the planet, fight to save ourselves.

There is nothing more preposterous than this idea that drilling equals economic recovery. We have drilling accident after accident. Some are not even brought out by the media for the public to note. We have people killed, and the land and water spoiled, costing billions to attempt to clean up. The only economic recovery in this game plan is for the Oil companies to become more wealthy from the pockets of the people. No other "recovery" will be seen overall. This is such a bogus bunch of cr..

YAY! I invest heavily in oil companies. Remember, companies don't make profits or pay taxes, people do.

George H W Bush placed a offshore drilling ban in 1990,,then George W bush lifted it July 2008 ,, 19 months later B P has the biggest oil spill/explosion in the history of the country, killing 11 people________________________George W. Bush in July 2008 lifted a 1990 executive order by George H. W. Bush banning offshore drilling, while at the same time calling for drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. In less than two years time B P manadged to have the worst oil spill in the history of this country killing 11 people,, President Barack Obama is for limited offshore drilling as part of an extensive energy independence overhaul,,,On March 31, 2010, President Obama announced that he was opening new areas in U.S. coastal waters to offshore drilling for gas and oil _____________ Offshore drilling has continued________ uninterrupted_______ in offshore Texas and Louisiana. ______In 2006, an 8,300,000-acre (33,600 km2) area in the Gulf of Mexico known as lease 181 was opened for exploration. The existing moratorium on leasing on the Outer Continental Shelf expires in 2012, and the debate is on whether or not to extend it_________________________DRILLING FOR OIL IN THIS COUNTRY HAS NEVER STOPED AT ANY TIME IN HISTORY,,,,,

Horse Puckey!! It took us over a year to get permits to continue to drill in new area's and those permits come at the rate of less than a handful a month. Permits to sidetrack or kickoff were given at a snails pace. It's because of Obama's policies the offshore oilfield saw it's slowest activity since the early 80's. Do you have the slightest clue how many deep water rigs there are left in The Gulf?

How about issuing a permit to actually recover the oil they have already found. This is like going to a restaurant and ordering and they ask you,do you want food with that order? I keep reading about how the exploritory well count is up, but no oil is being pumped.

Look at Canada....they produce all of their oil in Canada and provide 20% of the crude oil used in the US. Canada has all the oil they can use, plus exports oil to the US............but gasoline prices in Canada when taking in consideration taxes....is just about what they are in the US. Exxon can produce 50% of it's oil in the US for about $30.00 a barrel but after going through it's subsideries.....they set the wholsale price of gas according to the Worldwide price of crude. That is how they make their billions when crude prices go up.
Despite the pain Americans are feeling at the pump, we still pay much less than the drivers in many other developed nations in the world. Canadians, for example, pay about a third more than U.S. consumers, even though Canada is the biggest foreign supplier of oil to the U.S.

Adding a bit to oil supply will be helpful.
The real issue is to open up and lets be sufficient concerning oil supply...
The real issue is national security and not only economics.

Must be election time. While adding jobs, it will do nothing in regards to oil prices. Read related news above on "Oil Boomtowns" Very funny. Just don't molest my Manatee's you young drunken fools.

The Pre Election Campaigning goes On and On from Obama The Perpetual Candidate. No Drilling in ANWR...No Drilling off Our Coasts...delays in issuing permits in the Dakota's and the North and the West...if it wasn't such a political move on His part it would be Laughable.

I could agree with you , but then we'd both be wrong. Barack Hussein Obama prefers that American money goes to His Arab friend's rather then create New Jobs for Americans.
The administration is holding up permits...the administration is holding up the Canada Pipeline...it's OK to be a Partisan Hack...it's not OK to be stupid.
