Russell Pearce Recall Election: Arizona Immigration Law Architect Defeated By Jerry Lewis

Russell Pearce Recall Election

First Posted: 11/08/11 11:09 PM ET Updated: 11/09/11 10:53 AM ET

State Sen. Russell Pearce, the controversial architect of Arizona's immigration law, was voted out of office on Tuesday evening in a special recall election. He was defeated by Jerry Lewis, a fellow Republican who does not support the immigration crackdown and has vowed to reject gifts from special interest groups and work to ban gifts for legislators.

Lewis won with roughly 54 percent of the vote, state officials announced on Tuesday evening.

Pearce is the top Republican in the state senate, and a 10-year state legislator. He pioneered S.B. 1070, an immigration law passed in Arizona in 2010 that quickly prompted a lawsuit from the federal government. The law, which would have allowed police to ask for immigration papers at stops if they had "reasonable suspicion" someone was undocumented, was predominantly blocked before it went into effect.

The Arizona Republic reported on Tuesday that Pearce said the numbers were not "going his way" as results trickled in. "If being recalled means keeping your promises, then so be it," he said.

His critics rallied behind Lewis as the most viable alternative to Pearce, forming an unexpected coalition between Republican critics of Pearce and immigration reform supporters. Petra Falcon of Promise Arizona in Action, an immigrant organizing group, said Pearce's loss reflected the public's distaste for Pearce's "extremist positions."

"The political jerseys came off," Falcon said in a statement. "We are willing to work across party lines. We appreciate candidates of all parties who care about the future of our great state: those who respect and bring together diverse communities, focus on education, job creation and building a better Arizona. We look forward to a productive dialogue with Senator Lewis."

Promise Arizona organized about 300 volunteers for a door-knocking campaign, visiting 7,000 residents in the area since September, according to the organization. Promise Arizona contacted about 2,000 Latino voters on Tuesday to encourage them to vote.

They largely focused on the differences between Pearce and Lewis on immigration. Lewis, though for stricter border enforcement, has said the state rushed into S.B. 1070, which has been criticized as bad for the state and its immigrant and Latino populations. Lewis has said he would have voted "no" on the bill, although he understands the state's frustration over border issues.

"A year and a half after its passage, can we say that our border is more secure now than before its passage? I believe the answer is no," he told the Arizona Republic.
"Securing the border and protecting public safety requires that we provide our police and sheriff agencies with the necessary resources to combat violent criminal cartels. In this regard, SB 1070 missed the mark."

Pearce, meanwhile, has stood behind S.B. 1070, despite lawsuits from the federal government and various civil rights groups.

He has also attempted to fend off criticism for potentially inappropriate campaign donations. Pearce was caught up in a scandal surrounding the Fiesta Bowl, a college football tournament that came under fire for its illegal political contributions. Pearce accepted $1,025 in contributions from Fiesta Bowl executives and was accused of illegally accepting gifts in the form of tickets to games, which he has denied.

Pearce has pushed for a repeal of the state's Citizens Clean Elections Act, which was meant to aid candidates who refused special interest donations.

Lewis ran on a promise to introduce a bill banning gifts for legislators, and said in a campaign pledge that he will not "take any lobbyist or special interest group's gifts, lunches, tickets, or any other privilege."

Public Campaign Action Fund, a national organization that advocates against special interest money in politics, also encouraged voters to support Lewis over Pearce. The organization spent about $47,000 on the race, sending mailers to more than 17,000 voters over the past three weeks, said National Campaigns Director David Donnelly.

"His opposition to clean elections and his leadership in trying to repeal the law made him an immediate target for us," Donnelly said. "Given that he already had a target painted on his back because of his controversial positions on immigration, we felt like it was an opportunity to deliver a secondary punch that would knock him out."

CORRECTION: The mobilization effort in Arizona was put on by a specific arm of Promise Arizona, Promise Arizona in Action, and not the organization as a whole.

Rewritten history belongs to the conquerer, however what they left out in the history books is that when anglos first were permitted to live in Texas they signed a contract to become Mexican citizens and become catholics and were given land to settle. However, that contract was broken. Any how, does the statue of liberty not have the quote..." give me your tired and hungry masses yearning to be free..." does that only apply to Canadians and european caucasians? While we bullied, stole and robbed our homeland we began the slaughter of the redman... I know what it is to live under bigotry, do you?

Best news! Extreme attitudes like Pearces' are not American. Way to go, Arizona!!!

i would like to make three corrections to my statement. First, I put one extra American and second I said that those states are mexican names. What I meant was that they are Spanish names. Lastly, the last sentence was cut off. What I wanted to say was that I am glad to see my children and their friend interact and appreciate each other for who they are, not what race they are. That's what society should be like. This world would be a much better place for all of us and our children if people accept the concept of "ONE WORLD, ONE PEOPLE, ONE NATURE".

I think that a lot of people don't realize that this country was founded om immigration. Even caucasians were not originally from the United States, but guess what? Our ancestors were! Mexicans are descendants of American Native Americans and Spaniard. I suggest you and any other ignorant person that doesn't know what they're talking about take some time to read about the history of our America and then there will be nothing you can say. Have you noticed that Colorado, Arizona, Texas,California,Nevada,Nuevo Mexico, and many cities, streets, schools stores, and many other things in the United States are Mexican names? That's because this was our land before the White man came across the ocean and killed, abused and tortured my ancestors. Look at the facts! But I do not want to preach hate ar animosity. I want a nation and world where we start looking at each other as human beings and start treating each other with respect and appreciate the skills and knowledge we have. Everyone can be a positive addition to this society. There's this saying that I believe would help us as people make this world better for us all It says" Treat others as you would want to be treated". I am glad that my children and their friends see that color and race and their open minds!

No, what we did, in essence, was kick in the door and take someone else's stuff. We rationalized it by calling them savages, and telling ourselves that we were doing them a favor. Sound familiar?

In case you forgot some history of TX & CA, they were independent republics, that had fought for their freedom from Mexico-before they joined the USA. Some of the other states you cite, were part of land purchases. Just because you don't like the results now, does not mean the sale was illegitimate. And, before you start accusing the "white man", look to your own heritage! The Spanish in Central & South America make the "white man" you detest, look like under achievers!
02:43 PM on 11/12/2011
I just need to correct your version of history. There is such a thing in history that is called the Texas revolution that took that state from Mexico in 1836. And the states you mention were not the subject of purchase, but were aquired through the force of war. More specifically, the war between the United States and the country of Mexico in 1846. The statement that you attribute to me that I detest the white man is untrue. I detest any human being that acts on their racist tendencies or express a bigoted human character. Specially racist people that try to hide in the cloak of te republican party. I speak against extremist that wish to divide the American people in order that they may benefit from the results of conflict and division. Some people such as Mr. Pearson, I believe have a hidden agenda to start a violent conflict in which they erroniously think they will come out ahead and take over a weakened government. I am referring to his connection to the Nationalist Socialist Alliance in Arizona who everybody is aware off. We all must be aware of the real history if America. But history is in the past, what we must now concern ourselves with is the future. We must strive to build a better and united future, and live in peace and respect for each other.

Mulebone's BELIEVE IT OR NOT!

White state senator writes a law to stop illegal immigrants from taking jobs from blacks. The law was desperately needed. The black unemployment rate in Alabama is over 16%

The ACLU, La Raza, Obama, and other pro-amnesty advocates pump millions into the black community to get out the vote. Black ministers are persuaded to tell their congregations this is a Civil Rights issue and that if the law is left standing segregation will return.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT!

Black voters turn out in droves to drive white senator who was trying to help them out of office.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT!

The guy paid the price for having the courage to enforce our country's laws when the country itself is to cowardly to do so...it is a sad day when people from foreign lands have more influence on America than her legal citizens do....such a weak message to the world...but that is what we are nowdays isn't it, weak

World perspective does NOT mean anyone who wants to invade this country has the RIGHT to do so! RE:Mr. Lewis remarks that the state is no safer 1.5 yrs after the law was passed-> the Fed's blocked most of it! So, it's the law's "fault" that the state is NOT safer? I think it's Eric Holder's fault! ...Why does every country in the World have the Right to Secure their borders, except the USA?

There was an article in the latimes dot com that related how the children of immigrants are coming home from school hungry (where they receive two free meals-a-day) because they changed the menu from the chicken nuggets and pizza (that they are used-to eating at home) to meals with more fruits and vegitables (that cost three times as much.)

The California school districts now are bring-in the Illegal Immigrant mothers for lunch, to educate them on how to feed their kids! No wonder California is broke.
09:49 PM on 11/09/2011
Well done Arizona! Now, if you could only get rid of all the illegal aliens then you'd really have a state worth living in! Bravo!
10:50 PM on 11/09/2011
Now they're back to square one. What with the obama courts keeping Arizona officials from enforcing the laws, it's open house at the border with the illegals comming in as they please. That's all right with obama, he sees that as more voters for him. A little thing about being illegal and not having the right to vote doesn't matter in obama's world.
12:33 PM on 11/14/2011
Just to provide you with some information, U.S. immigration law is the legal domain of the Federal Goverment. The states cannot make their own immigration policies. They are not soverign countries. What bigots politicans in Arizona have attempted to do is illegal and discriminatory against the Latino community. The 9th federal district court has already ruled on that matter. As a citizen you should want to obey the laws of our Nation. It's not about gaining votes, its about treating human beings with dignity and respect that all humans deserve. If your interested in solving the illegal immigration situation, maybe you could convince the Republican Party to endorse a comprehensive immigration policy that would include everybody's concerns and needs.
02:27 AM on 11/17/2011
Response to Awpaguy. I repeat, only the Federal Govt. can enact immigration law, not the states. Read the U.S. constitution. The Arizona SB 1070 amounted to discrimination against brown skin American citizens and discrimination is against the law. I will also remind you that 6% of the 11 million illegals in American are white Europeans. I don't see you all worked-up about that. What would be your plan to round them up for deportation. Your views only divided the American community along bigoted and racial lines. What is needed is a humane, comprehensive Federal immigration policy to settle the question, not racist ideas.
