WOBURN, Mass. -- A Delaware man convicted of fraud for faking his way into Harvard was ordered held without bail Wednesday after admitting he violated his probation by citing the university on a job resume.

Adam Wheeler, 25, was sentenced last year to 2 1/2 years in jail and 10 years on probation for identity fraud and other charges. The sentence was mostly suspended; Wheeler served just one month in jail while awaiting trial.

Prosecutors said he got into Harvard by falsely claiming that he had attended the exclusive Phillips Academy prep school in Andover and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Wheeler, originally from Milton, Del., was kicked out of Harvard in 2009 after he tried to get the school's endorsement for Rhodes and Fulbright scholarships. Authorities said his application for the scholarships contained a string of lies, including a list of books he said he had co-authored, courses he said he had taught and lectures he said he had given.

After he left Harvard, Wheeler applied and was accepted to Stanford as a transfer student. Stanford rescinded his admission after media reports about his arrest.

Under the terms of his probation, Wheeler was barred from representing himself as a Harvard student or graduate. Wheeler's lawyer, Steven Sussman, acknowledged that Wheeler had violated that provision by saying on his resume and in a cover letter for a job application that he had attended Harvard.

He said Wheeler lost a job in July and was feeling "financial pressure" to support himself and to pay Harvard the court-ordered restitution.

"He obviously made a mistake," Sussman said of Wheeler's use of Harvard on his resume.

Assistant District Attorney John Verner said he will ask that Wheeler be ordered to serve the remainder of his sentence – 2 years and 5 months – for violating his probation.

Verner argued that Wheeler be held without bail until a hearing next week, when a judge is expected to decide whether to give Wheeler jail time. Verner said prosecutors are concerned that Wheeler might flee, now that he knows he may go to jail.

"I think the gravity of the situation for Mr. Wheeler is greater today than it was," Verner said.

Sussman asked that Wheeler be released on personal recognizance until the Nov. 17 hearing, saying that he has been living in Massachusetts and considers the state his home.

Judge Diane Kottmyer ordered him held without bail, citing the possible jail sentence hanging over him and concern about his "mental health status."

During his sentencing hearing in December 2010, Kottmyer said Wheeler's fraud, which continued even after he was caught, showed an "element of compulsion" and a "lack of moral compass." She ordered him to continue to receive psychological counseling.

During his sentencing hearing, Wheeler apologized and said he was "ashamed and embarrassed."

A spokesman for Harvard declined to comment, referring questions to prosecutors.

if a person that is smart enough to actually successfully cheat his way into Harvard, than he should be in Harvard because he just showed the world how smart he can be and actually achieve this almost impossible goal.

The prisons are so overcrowded they are letting criminals out early, but take up a space in jail for someone who lied on his resume' How many people are guilty of lying on their resume' or at least stretching the truth a bit? who is the brilliant judge who sentenced him? Disgraceful.

Like many of you have already said, this kid is bright, no doubt about it. I hope and pray that he does not get jail time for this, he doesn't deserve it. Our jails and prisons are overloaded with real criminals and to think that his going to jail will allow the release of a real criminal, I mean who's bed is he going to take? I think our system is beginning to fail everyone of us considering we have a lying "stand in president" who lied to get his way into the white house yet nothing has ever happened to him. Despicable to say the least! We have all told lies, so! He didn't hurt anyone and I say we all say prayers for him that he gets released. I think this guy is a normal, intelligent young man who figured out how to do what most of us could never do, he cracked the code! What an impressive soul. If he is mentally ill, this should not be held against him either.

Let's see if he gets out of jail in 84 min.

For this guy to sucessfully hoodwink his way into schools like Harvard and Stanford, he's obviously quite intelligent; what he seems to lack, however, is the common sense to know when he's taken the ruse too far. It's unfortunate he's resorted to scamming his way into schools, because he's clearly bright enough to succeed on his own merits.

There are people committing real serious crimes that should be locked up yet Mr. Wheeler will be going to jail for lying. Where is the harm in this, if not only to himself? Employers or educatonal institutions need only to verify his credentials and realize that he is not truthful and therefore not hired or accepted to their institution. However, if they fail to verify his personl information then they should bare the burden for their stupid mistake. Again I ask, where is there a crime here?
Now, one may argue that's he getting a free ride or something which he doesn't desreve. However, once again if a business or educational institution does its "due diligence" the lies will be discovered.
Imagine the amount tax payer money being wasted on a petty crime like this. Come to think of it maybe I ought to move to Woburn, Mass. There must hardly be any crime committed there since the district attorney has time to prosecute a person for lying on his resume. I like to see what kind of sentence hard core criminals get from that judge.

Faking your way in is hard enough, Now you have to do the work. obviosly he did the work to even be looked at for a Rhodes Scholarship or the Fulbright. So what if he didn't actually go to the prep school, he still had the ability to get in. These pompus universities need to relax and get off of their high horses, they have absoultely 0 moral conviction themselves. They keep turning out these losers we call bankers, senators, congressmen, and Presidents. They had to learn their morals somewhere. Had to be in the "how to dupe hundreds of millions of people out of everything they have and give it to ourselves 101, 102, and 410" classes.
