Eddie Murphy Not Hosting The Oscars: 13 People Who Should Instead (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 11/09/11 04:30 PM ET   Updated: 11/09/11 04:33 PM ET

Well, well, well. It looks like Eddie Murphy will not be hosting the 2012 Oscars, as the world learned this Wednesday afternoon via an announcement by the Academy. Just the day before, Oscars producer Brett Ratner stepped down amidst backlash after using an anti-gay slur. Talk about drama -- even for Hollywood.

We at HuffPost Comedy don't like to waste any time when it comes to responding to breaking news this delirious. We quickly came up with our 13 possible contenders for a new Oscars host, and if you're a fan of legitimate suggestions peppered with sarcastic ones, you're going to love it.

Don't be afraid to sound off in the comments and be sure to use the slideshow to vote for your favorite choice. All we're saying is, if they decide to bring back James Franco and Anne Hathaway again, we're going to be watching something else that night.

NPH is one of those once-in-a-lifetime performers who was born to host. Harris received raves hosting the Emmys and the Tonys, steals the show in the new "Harold and Kumar," and as an openly gay celebrity, could help the Academy weather the firestorm set off by Ratner's unfortunate slur.

Professor Irwin Corey might lend an air of legitimacy to the Oscars.

Anybody will do. Then they can put Billy Crystal back in the moth balls.

Lewis Black would be my selection. Poor guy puts so much emotion on his work that I think he's going to get a heart attack during one of his routines. Even so, I love his work.

Gaga should host it

I know it was Jaimie Foxx who won for Ray. I was just wonderin' what if anything some folk would say? The Oscars were great back in the day. In my opinion. It was cool. like when the guy streaked 'cross the stage. David Niven. Wow. I'm 62 so maybe y'all will cut me some slack. It was a different era. Now it appears to be tacky and muggin' for the camera. Gee. Wha' happened? Life.

I love Sarah Silverman. But that would not be the appropriate venue for her... Or, she would not be appropriate for that venue; Depending on how one looks at it.

I say the Muppets should host it. Kermit as MC, the two old guys heckling from the balcony, the band in the orchestra pit, Gonzo trying to get a role in a major movie and on and on. Limitless possibilities

I think they should have the duo of Billy Crystal and Neil Patrick Harris. I have a feeling those two could play off each other very well. And it could be like an apprenticeship for NPH, so that for future years he would just host the thing ongoing like Bob Hope did.

Another big possibility would be Neil Patrick Harris and Hugh Jackman. Finally, I think pairing the Muppets with a human host would be genius. That is pretty much what the Muppet Show did for years. I would suggest taking the saltiness of Betty White and adding that to the sweet tongue-in-cheek of the Muppets could be EPIC.

This list is fantastic. Bummer that Billy Crystal is hosting yet again. Justin Timberlake + Jimmy Fallon's rapping would be phenomenal. Amy Poehler & Tina Fey is a close second. And what about Kristin Wiig + Zack Galifanakis together? Great suggestions. It's a shame the academy is taking such a staid course.

Here's my list:
Seth McFarlane
Zack Galifianakis
Russell Brand
Neil Patrick Harris

Neil Patrick Harris OR Craig Ferguson OR Both!! They'd bring this 'event' back from the Dead.
