Lil Wayne And Drake: No Joint Album, Because Of 'Watch The Throne'

Drake Lil Wayne

The Lil' Wayne/ Drake collaboration Young Money/Cash Money CEO Birdman promised us is no more, Drizzy and Weezy confirmed to XXL magazine. It seems Young Money's favorite sons realized even they aren't up for the inevitable comparisons to Jay-Z's and Kanye's "Watch The Throne." Here Drizzy goes, lookin pitiful:

“Me and Wayne scrapped the idea of a collaboration album,” Drake exclusively told XXL. “We just agreed that it would be looked upon as…It would be sort of this competition [with Watch The Throne]. I feel like it would get caught in this whirlwind of hype. [Wayne] agreed. We just said, ‘If we do it, we’ll do it down the line. But right now is not the time.’”

As long as we're on the subject of inevitable comparisons, Drake currently owns as many sweaters as Imelda Marcos had shoes. Wherefore the same spirit here, oh bewooled one?

For now, we will content ourselves with one Lil' Wayne/Drake track they can't entirely claim as their own:

For Drake's sake he might want to get away from the Young Money crew, my opinion is that he is a far better musician and his future can be brighter than it already is.

Why do they care what West and Jay-Z do. Had Drake and Wayne release their joint album first, I guarantee that West and Jay-Z would have used it as fuel to counter with an even better album. If they ever do make the joint album, Wayne has to find himself. Wayne has regress so much over the past years. Delaying the album could end up being a good move. Right now I cant see Wayne and Drake making a song as emotional as "New Day" or as good as "Murder to Excellence". Kanye and Jay have been working together for 10 years before they embarked on a joint album, they did not just decide in one day to make a joint album(which is the feeling I get with Drake and Wayne).

I PERSONALLY THINK THEY DONT WANT TO DO BETTER THEN JAY AND KANYE. THE LIOTTLE DISSIN ON RECORDS ARENT ANYTHING SERIOUS BUT EVERYTIME JAY HAS FELT THREATENED BY ANOTHER ARTIST THERE CAREERS "SUDDENLY"STALLS OUT. mAYBE ITS DIFFERENT WHERE YOU ALL ARE AT BUT I DONT KNOW ANYBODY LISTENING OR TALKING ABOUT THE JAY AND KANYE ALBUM. BUT I CANT GO 5MIN WITHOUT HEARING DRAKE OR WAYNE.PERSONALLY IM NOT INTO NONE OF THEM ..

Good, Drake is WAY better than Lil Wayne... Although neither of them are my cup of tea.

If chanting and grunting = poetry, rhythm and creative wordsmithing (vocabulary skills) on a level that few can do well...yeah

It wouldn't really be a competition since Lil Wayne and Drake both suck so much.

are you comparing the artists, or the music? Because "Watch The Throne" screams "publicity stunt" more so than a classic rap album

Since when is all the par posing and posturing NOT about competition and one-upmanship? Aren't rappers, especially with regard to lil Wayne and Jay-Z always calling each other out already? And why would Drake and lil Wayne need a joint album anyway since they are on each others songs so often their individual albums seem like joint albums anyway?

I am going to just go out on a limb and guess that by saying they don't want to compete, they don't want to come out with a similar concept but sell less. In other words, you don't compete, you can't lose.

to prematurely assume that they would sell less albums, seems to assume that they aren't as popular with the "main stream" audience. And that's probably true, as most rapper's choose not to cater to the "mainstream" ear. But with that said, people with enough exposure to the work of all 4 of the artists (the one's who would have a more insightful opinion on this) mostly likely don't agree with your shallow analysis

Which part of my shallow analysis would they disagree with. The idea that rap is all about "swagger" and posing, or that L'il Wayne and Drake, both just as mainstream as JayZ and Kanye I would argue, should just admit they didn't want to be seen as copying someone else?

I just thought the whole "competition" thing was ridiculous because rappers are always competing with each other, calling each other out, etc. That is all competition. As is record sales and making money in the music business in general.

So to say they didn't want to be seen as competing is strange to me. I think they are both respectable artists and didn't want to be accused of ripping off someone else's idea, or "following in their footsteps". I think that is a more legitimate excuse than "competition". But maybe that's just me.
