Penn State Scandal Timeline: Key Dates In The Jerry Sandusky Sex Abuse Case

Penn State Scandal Timeline

By The Associated Press   11/ 9/11 11:32 PM ET   AP

-- A chronological look at the case against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, based on a grand jury report in Pennsylvania state court. Some key dates in Penn State football history are included. Sandusky has been charged with 40 criminal counts, accusing him of serial sex abuse of minors.

___

1969 – Jerry Sandusky starts his coaching career at Penn State University as a defensive line coach.

1977 – Jerry Sandusky founds The Second Mile. It begins as a group foster home dedicated to helping troubled boys and grows into a charity dedicated to helping children with absent or dysfunctional families.

January 1983 – Associated Press voters select Penn State as college football's national champion for the 1982 season.

January 1987 – Associated Press voters select Penn State as college football's national champion for the 1986 season.

1994 – Boy known as Victim 7 in the report meets Sandusky through The Second Mile program at about the age of 10.

1994-95 – Boy known as Victim 6 meets Sandusky at a Second Mile picnic at Spring Creek Park when he is 7 or 8 years old.

1995-96 – Boy known as Victim 5, meets Sandusky through The Second Mile when he is 7 or 8, in second or third grade.

1996-97 – Boy known as Victim 4, at the age of 12 or 13, meets Sandusky while he is in his second year participating in The Second Mile program.

1996-98 – Victim 5 is taken to the locker rooms and showers at Penn State by Sandusky when he is 8 to 10 years old.

Jan. 1, 1998 – Victim 4 is listed, along with Sandusky's wife, as a member of Sandusky's family party for the 1998 Outback Bowl.

1998 – Victim 6 is taken into the locker rooms and showers when he is 11 years old. When Victim 6 is dropped off at home, his hair is wet from showering with Sandusky. His mother reports the incident to the university police, who investigate.

Detective Ronald Schreffler testifies that he and State College Police Department Detective Ralph Ralston, with the consent of the mother of Victim 6, eavesdrop on two conversations the mother of Victim 6 has with Sandusky. Sandusky says he has showered with other boys and Victim 6's mother tries to make Sandusky promise never to shower with a boy again but he will not. At the end of the second conversation, after Sandusky is told he cannot see Victim 6 anymore, Schreffler testifies Sandusky says, "I understand. I was wrong. I wish I could get forgiveness. I know I won't get it from you. I wish I were dead."

Jerry Lauro, an investigator with the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare, testifies he and Schreffler interviewed Sandusky, and that Sandusky admits showering naked with Victim 6, admits to hugging Victim 6 while in the shower and admits that it was wrong.

The case is closed after then-Centre County District Attorney Ray Gricar decides there will be no criminal charge.

June 1999 – Sandusky retires from Penn State but still holds emeritus status.

Dec. 28, 1999 – Victim 4 is listed, along with Sandusky's wife, as a member of Sandusky's family party for the 1999 Alamo Bowl.

Summer 2000 – Boy known as Victim 3 meets Sandusky through The Second Mile when he is between seventh and eighth grade.

Fall 2000 – A janitor named James Calhoun observes Sandusky in the showers of the Lasch Football Building with a young boy, known as Victim 8, pinned up against the wall, performing oral sex on the boy. He tells other janitorial staff immediately. Fellow Office of Physical Plant employee Ronald Petrosky cleans the showers at Lasch and sees Sandusky and the boy, who he describes as being between the ages of 11 and 13.

Calhoun tells other physical plant employees what he saw, including Jay Witherite, his immediate supervisor. Witherite tells him to whom he should report the incident. Calhoun was a temporary employee and never makes a report. Victim 8's identity is unknown.

March 1, 2002 – A Penn State graduate assistant enters the locker room at the Lasch Football Building. In the showers, he sees a naked boy, known as Victim 2, whose age he estimates to be 10 years old, being subjected to anal intercourse by a naked Sandusky. The graduate assistant tells his father immediately.

March 2, 2002 – In the morning, the graduate assistant calls Coach Joe Paterno and goes to Paterno's home, where he reports what he has seen.

March 3, 2002 – Paterno calls Tim Curley, Penn State Athletic Director to his home the next day and reports a version of what the grad assistant had said.

March 2002 – Later in the month the graduate assistant is called to a meeting with Curley and Senior Vice President for Finance and Business Gary Schultz. The grad assistant reports what he has seen and Curley and Schultz say they will look into it.

March 27, 2002 (approximate) – The graduate assistant hears from Curley. He is told that Sandusky's locker room keys are taken away and that the incident has been reported to The Second Mile. The graduate assistant is never questioned by university police and no other entity conducts an investigation until the graduate assistant testifies in Grand Jury in December 2010.

2005-2006 – Boy known as Victim 1 says that meets Sandusky through The Second Mile at age 11 or 12.

Spring 2007 – During the 2007 track season, Sandusky begins spending time with Victim 1 weekly, having him stay overnight at his residence in College Township, Pa.

Spring 2008 – Termination of contact with Victim 1 occurs when he is a freshman in a Clinton County high school. After the boy's mother calls the school to report sexual assault, Sandusky is barred from the school district attended by Victim 1 from that day forward and the matter is reported to authorities as mandated by law.

Early 2009 – An investigation by the Pennsylvania attorney general begins when a Clinton County, Pa. teen boy tells authorities that Sandusky has inappropriately touched him several times over a four-year period.

September 2010 – Sandusky retires from day-to-day involvement with The Second Mile, saying he wants to spend more time with family and handle personal matters.

Nov. 5, 2011 – Sandusky is arrested and released on $100,000 bail after being arraigned on 40 criminal counts.

Nov. 7, 2011 – Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly says Paterno is not a target of the investigation into how the school handled the accusations. But she refuses to say the same for university President Graham Spanier. Curley and Schultz, who have stepped down from their positions, surrender on charges that they failed to alert police to complaints against Sandusky.

Nov. 8, 2011 – Possible ninth victim of Sandusky contacts state police as calls for ouster of Paterno and Spanier grow in state and beyond. Penn State abruptly cancels Paterno's regular weekly press conference.

Nov. 9, 2011 – Paterno and Spanier, one of the nation's longest-serving college presidents, are ousted, effective immediately. Earlier in the day, Paterno announced he'd retire at the end of the season. In the end, he didn't have that choice.

What a sick cruel man, I was sexual abused by an older male, and if my mom wouldn't of done anything I would feel worthless.

Those with all the GOLD make all the rules (this is the "Golden Rule"). How could this happen for so many years? Sandusky preyed on innocent children from a foster home - his own charity! He knew these children needed to feel loved and he does this to them! What a wicked person! He is the DEVIL.

To those who witness this and didn't stop it or call the police immediately - you are scum of the earth for not helping those children. God will handle all of you.

I would never let an adult hurt an innocent child in my presence, and I am a female! End of story.

Ok, so when McQuaery reported what he saw, Paterno believed it enough to go to the Athletic Director. We must note here that in a school like Peen State, the winning football coach is not the employee of the Athletic Director, but at least his peer with more power. Nothing comes of this, but Paterno doesn't believe it enough to follow through. Or doesn't care enough, or just wants to wish it all away. OK, so he kind of believed McQueary enough to report it and drop it, but not enough to ban Snadusky from the locker rooms with or without little boys. So he doesn't believe Mc Queary enough to really stop what McQuaery said was happening, but yet he hires him as part of the team. Would you hire someone who made up or exaggerated stories about his superior, who happens to be a friend of yours? I would either believe McQueary and follow through to the end, banning Sandusky from the locker rooms, or I would think that he was spreading stories and not hire him. I would not let go what he said and then hire him. That makes no sense at all.

Let’s replace the famous names with letters and numbers.
A young man 'YM1' catches adult 'R1' Raping a 10 year old boy 'B1' in 2002....
'YM1' does NOT stop the rape... Think about this!!!!!!! A 10 year old boy 'B1' is forced to receive anal inter course from 'R1'. Cowardly and possibly criminal.
How many of you believe criminal charges should be filed against the young man 'YM1' for allowing a violent rape of a child to continue?
YM1' reported the incident to his boss 'A1'.
'A1' reported an incident to his boss 'A2'.
A1, A2 or YM1 did nothing to protect the children!!!!!!!!!!!!
How many rapes happened after the incident in 2002?
The motivation, occupation or name of those should NOT matter. All of these people may be fantastic people, coaches, parents and friends. These fantastic people made huge errors and should be held accountable.
Children were not protected from a rapist by those in a position to protect those children.
Bottom line: A1, A2 and YM1 all had the opportunity/obligation to protect children and they did nothing.
Timeline and known Victims: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/09/penn-state-scandal-timeline-jerry-sandusky_n_1084204.html
Looking at the above link we see Coach, Assist Coach and the athletic departments are not the only folks with the information and power to help children but, did nothing

I am your first fan.   Your points about how different this would be without the famous names is spot on.

However, not stopping the rape is not a crime.    But  its interesting that Paterno hired young man YM1.   Either Paterno believed him and didn't follow through, or deal with the fact that YM1 didn't stop it and make sure the boy was safe,  or Paterno thinks that YM1 exaggerated or lied.    But in either case, 1.  He saw it and didn't protect the boy   or   2.  He lied or embellished   THEN WHY WOULD HE HIRE YM1?   I mean this was supposed to be a program about personal integrity.

I suspect there was a little hush job here.

one thing that should be added is that schultz, who meet with the eye witness, was the head administration official of the campus police.

"In the position he [schultz] had held since 1995, Mr. Schultz oversaw the school's human resources, police department, and other operations."

the media's refusal to cover this has been astonishing

Fanned.  You are correct that this man is certainly as culpable, but he isn't as famous so it isn't going to get covered now.  He also didn't have the power that Paterno had.
08:33 PM on 11/12/2011
This is just one instance of misconduct being covered up in one university. What else has been covered up at Penn State and at other universities?

It is standard behavior in closed cultures to be protective of the tribe, even when there are a few flaws within its membership. The myth of the tribe transcends individual reality. When membership is granted, the power and identity of the individual are derived from the tribe. Anything that would shatter that connection would shatter one's own reality. Willfully damage to the tribe's mythology would be met with loathing and ostracism -- which is tantamount to cultural and social suicide.

Even academia's ivory towers are not too tall to be overcome by the less noble of our culture's memes -- the need to be part of the "in" crowd. The people who knew what they knew chose to be quiet in order to maintain the myth -- both the University's and their own.

And, I suspect, this is happening elsewhere as well. I don't advocate witch hunts. I do suggest that our society chooses to look the other way when we see more and more and more of this type of behavior among our leaders, icons, and heroes. Time to look a little more deeply at whom and what we idolize, and why.

Right on, Karen. It is downright cultish.

Fanned, Karen.   I am a huge college sports fan, especially football and basketball.   However, I have long bemoaned the fact that these programs and the men, young and old, who are involved with them have enjoyed privilege not available to common man.

My hope is that this will begin a process of changing that.  However, we all have to help by never looking the other way when it happens no matter how small.

November 12, 2011 "Sandusky's memoir titled "Touched" was published in 2000. His daughter, Kara Sandusky Werner, wrote in the introduction: "We were always proud of the things he did for kids." is edited and updated to "Touched- What I Did To Little Boys for 30 years" with his daughters introduction changed to "We always suspected he was touching kids but were afraid to admit it"

This timeline helped me start figuring things out. I couldn't believe some of this information. How is it possible for so much to have happened an not be taken care of. Even if the incidents were to have been seen as single happenings, I don't understand how this could have continued for so long.

Thanks for providing a clear timeline of the situation. I hope that people conside donating to an abuse prevention effort in light of this tragedy. One such good cause is Prevent Child Abuse Pennsylvania, www.preventchildabusepa.org. They are working to educate the public about abuse, what to do to prevent it and getting more legislation requiring adults who work with children get training on how to report abuse.

One must wonder if there is a culture of pedophilia at that university or that the overwhelming amounts of money being circulated at this elitist institution caused people not to care? We are talking about millions and a culture of priviledged academics that live in a secret little world of their own! What do they care about what happens to those outside that circle! The FBI must investigate all involved including the campus police! Just think of the pending litigations that will consume this school!
01:08 PM on 11/12/2011
not just the school but the investigators and the parents and the list will hopefully go on and on !!!
11:11 PM on 11/12/2011
What about all the other universities and public and private institutions? Surely Penn State is not alone in this.
09:31 AM on 11/12/2011
Thank you for this list of facts. I found difficulty finding a clear statement of what had happened at Penn State amidst commentary.

So much of what purports to be "news" these days is actually opinion.

That's because conventional news has been imploding, and blogging is on the rise. You get what you pay for.

Rah-Rah... Obviously the cash and glory derived from that little piece of inflated calf skin inflated enough egos and wallets to cause blind eyes to be turned on these mounting and egregious sins.
Yet another example of the depths to which our culture, our country has sunk by the pandering to income-producing heroics of such degenerates, at the expense of plain, human and lawful decency. Proves that Wall Street isn't the only corrosive institution that needs "occupational" scrutiny!

This is a tragic story, the worst part being the victimization of innocent children, but equally disturbing is the growing list of people who have known of this dude's sick behavior for years, never stepping up, and certainly never seeking to protect these babies.

Reading between the lines of this timeline, along with the news reports I have been hearing, it appears that many people knew Sandusky was a pedophile and used his "child advocacy" vehicle as his own buffet table. They were looking out for him.

I wonder how long this would have happened if one of the boys were related to a coaching staff member, or even Paterno himself.

May God have mercy on the lost innocence of these boys, and that justice be swift and painful to everyone involved in the cover-up of this dude's behavior.

I replaced the original word man in my entry with dude because he is not one.

Follow the money! Boosters paid to keep it quiet. Why did the winner of Coach of the Year retire and NEVER get ANY calls for a head coaching position? How does an DA go away and no one does anything about it? Small town protecting its own. Makes me want to puke!

This timeline omits the disappearance of Sandusky's would-be prosecutor, Ray Gricar. Gricar disappeared in 2005, and he is presumed dead (and is adjudicated to be legally dead), although his body/remains have never been found. There are many conspiracy theories that Gricar is alive and living under an assumed identity. The most interesting of those theories includes Philip Beavers and "Joe King." After the reclusive "Joe King" was allegedly murdered by a gunshot wound to the stomach and having his fingers pureed in a blender, authorities discovered that "Joe King" actually died in 1932. The man using King's identity remains unknown. But, Beavers and Joe ... those names have lent themselves to the mystique. Whether Gricar's disappearance is connected to Sandusky, we do not yet know. But, it is a possibility worth considering.

In addition, I believe, the hard drive in Gricar's laptop was either found missing or destroyed beyond capability of capturing data
