Drop Dead Ads Banned By ASA For Too-Skinny Model (PHOTOS, POLL)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 11/10/2011 8:42 am Updated: 01/10/2012 4:12 am

Just add it to the list.

On the heels of banning Dakota Fanning's sultry ad for Marc Jacobs' "Oh, Lola!" perfume, UK's Advertising Standards Authority has put the kibosh on another advert, this one for featuring a too-skinny model.

As online mag Campaign reports, the ASA cited ads for Drop Dead, a British clothing line, as "socially irresponsible" for featuring a visibly underweight model in a bikini.

In a statement, the ASA said that it considered the young model too skinny:

"In the bikini images her hip, rib and collar bones were highly visible. We also noted that in the bikini and denim shorts images, hollows in her thighs were noticeable and she had prominent thigh bones. We considered that in combination with the stretched out pose and heavy eye makeup, the model looked underweight in the pictures."

Considering that the ads are targeted at young people, the image of a seemingly anorexic model sends the wrong message about body image, says the ASA, and are therefore banned from use.

Drop Dead is just one more fashion company to get caught in ASA's crosshairs, as the British watchdog agency has gotten busy regulating the often provocative images used by fashion and beauty brands.

The ASA has taken issue with sexiness, such as the Dakota Fanning ad as well as the presence of racy adverts near elementary schools; with suggested drugs use, such as YSL's Belle D'Opium perfume spot; and with the blatant deception of consumers, such as overly airbrushed L'Oreal ads and a Louis Vuitton advert that implied its products are all made by hand.

Now body image is also coming under fire. Take a look at the supposedly anorexic model from Drop Dead's ads below. Do you think the ad deserved to be banned?

Quick Poll

Are these images "socially irresponsible"?

Absolutely -- they promote a unattainable, unhealthy body image to youth.

Nah -- she's just thin, not sickly. Nothing to see here.

The girl is skinny fair enough. But im a size 6, eat constantly, and im not anorexic/bulimic or have any other kinds of body issues. It's how people are. Everyone is different. The fact she's is skinny and is a model is irrelevant. Magazine's and the Fashion industry are not promoting "Anorexia" or "Bulimia", its down to parents and guardians to teach children that everyone is beautiful in their own way, and there is no right and wrong in how someone looks. They should be taught how to be healthy and to be happy with who you are, and by continuously making small things like a Models body size/shape an issue and putting it in the news, the more young people will read into and know about it. Calling girls this size "skinny/anorexic/disgusting" is discrimination. It teaches people to judge others on how they look, which is exactly how people lead to going down the route of eating disorders in the first place....

We need an agency like this in the States.
03:40 PM on 11/29/2011
Why? Do you feel compelled to control what other people see, or might think?

Understanding that the standards are entirely subjective and unpredictable, and probably not the same as yours, would you be satisfied with such an agency if we did?

There is a differance between healthy, thin, skinny, and under weight. In my opinion this woman is under weight and there is nothing attractive about that. Its just as un-attractive as over weight.
03:42 PM on 11/29/2011
So is your objection that she's ugly?

Would you feel differently if it were captioned to show that she was illustrating abuse by her boyfriend, who does not take her to restaurants with enough appetizing calories on the menu?

ya know that is just really not sexy by any stretch of the imagination. I guess that achieves the point if you just want us to look at the bathing suit.

the reason why this model is featured is because she is the clothing line owner's girlfriend. Oliver Sykes owns the line and Amanda Hendrick, the above model, is his longtime girlfriend. They did not choose her because she's too thin, but because she is close with most of those involved with the company.

gimme a break. she's no skinnier than some victoria's secret models like izabel goulart, chanel iman , and karlie kloss. talk about ribs & jutting hip bones, those girls are really thin & yet VS still hires them to model lingerie. get over it.

None of the VS models look like that.

OMG! Is that Karen Carpenter the day before she died? I can see every bone in her body! Did they find her on a deserted island?

I'm glad they took pictures of her. They can be used against the guy that locked her up in a closet and tried to starve her to death. I hope he gets life!!

She's just skinny. If she were sickly her arms wouldn't look as good as they do.

But her arms aren't all vein-y and odd looking. That's just her natural shape. Do you honestly have a problem with this photo?
10:38 PM on 11/27/2011
That's sick in the head and heading toward sick in the body, gets all twisted up in image and fashion and it's unhealthy. Don't tell me they eat anything they want. Balderdash. They may throwup anything they want. But this is not healthy. It just isn't . This is really close to starving which can cause organ damage later on in life. And for the present, it look's like she was just liberated from a concentration camp .... in a bikini. Sick. Sad. Eat something, girl, before you are unable and want to.

Aw, can it fatty....

It's a skinny chick, not an anorexic chick....nor someone from Auschwitz..

Oh. god. no.

As the mother of a teenage girl, I'd like to say something to the fashion industry.

But the mods won't let me.

It's a bit hypocritical to say that the ad should be banned because it's promoting a bad stereotype when that claim itself is promoting a stereotype. Some people are ridiculously thin or skinny - even to the point of being unhealthy. It is a fact of life. Given that in the US the obesity rate is through the roof perhaps this is out of place but imagine trying to tell a girl she can't be a model (or do something she wants) because she isn't heavy enough. Banning this is just creating discrimination - albeit discrimination that is more socially acceptable.

This also only applies to this advertisement - I'm aware of other "anorexia" ads that were similar, but had significant dissimilarities.
04:35 PM on 11/28/2011
While there's some truth to what you say, those people are the exception, not the rule.

When teenage girls see an ad like this they don't think "oh, she's just one of the few people in life who is naturally anorexic-looking." They think "wow, that must be a normal weight, and I need to lose 40 pounds." There's nothing rational about teenage girls and body image.

I completely agree with you. I'm just aware of how quickly stereotypes can get formed and damage that they can do. I didn't mean to discount the negative impact that advertising has on young women and girls.

I think she's just skinny.
