Occupy Oakland Shooting: Man Shot Outside Frank Ogawa Plaza (VIDEO)

Occupy Oakland Shooting

First Posted: 11/10/11 10:11 PM ET Updated: 11/10/11 10:45 PM ET

A man was shot outside the Occupy encampment by Oakland City Hall Thursday evening, witnesses said. He did not survive.

Sources on the scene said four to six shots were fired outside the 12th Street BART station at the intersection of 14th Street and Broadway by Frank Ogawa Plaza, which has served as the epicenter of Occupy Oakland since the group formed more than a month ago. The victim was given CPR by Oakland firefighters before an ambulance drove him away.

Members of Occupy Oakland remained adamant that the incident was unrelated to their movement. "This was not an internal incident," 35-year-old Shake Anderson told the San Francisco Chronicle. "What happened was the result of neighborhood violence. Don't forget, we're in downtown Oakland."

Interim Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan confirmed the victim's death during a press conference, explaining that the a fight transpired between two groups of African American males, during which one pulled out a gun and fired several rounds into the crowd. Protesters interrupted his speech several times, shouting, "Turn the lights on!"

Occupy Oakland's official Twitter account expressed condolences while also distancing itself from the shooting. "This was unrelated to the occupation. Please keep this man in your thoughts," one tweet read.

According to the Bay Citizen, ABC7 News cameraman Randy Davis sustained injuries during the chaotic aftermath, but remained on the scene to continue filming.

Occupy protesters, meanwhile, stood in a line with locked arms so officials could address the situation. Some formed a candlelight vigil nearby, while others packed up and left for the night. SF Weekly reports that Occupy Oakland is planning a peace march for Friday and another vigil for 10pm Thursday evening.

"This is what we are fighting against," the occupiers said during Thursday's General Assembly.

As of Thursday evening, officers had not made any arrests, and the suspect remains on the loose.

During the Occupy San Francisco march yesterday two SFPD officers were assaulted. Since this type of story goes against the narrative of the "evil cops," I don't expect a single mention on Hpost.
08:21 PM on 11/13/2011
It is the job of the police to be 'assaulted'. This is why they get paid good wages and carry weapons.

If you want to hear about the local police blotter, perhaps you should read... The local police blotter. Which this isn't. A man being shot is far more important than police being involved in a scuffle.

Wow Crissa, that's some statement. "It is the job of the police to be assaulted". Okay...you're not a liberal by any chance, are you?

Nowhere in any police job description does it say that they are supposed to just stand back and take whatever comes to them. I don't get paid $31.00 an hour to be a punching bag.

I just thought Hpost should mention (and to their credit they did) a relevant incident at the OWS movement.

latest news: encampment moving to Pelosi's 'hood. See you there.

The one thing that I have noticed is that the Democrats are supporting and defending this "Occupy" movement and when the talking heads from that side endorse it on TV they use flowery language but all they are saying is Socialism, Socialism and more Socialism. Income disparity, disenfranchised blah, blah blah. Socialism is what they are endorsing being careful not to use the exact words from the Communist Manifesto but the same meaning. Instead of Income Redistribution they say Economic Justice: Socialism. It looks good on paper but when put in practice it always leads to a total authoritarian dictatorship like USSR was and China is. Telling you how many children you can have. How come none of the beautiful people on TV are discussing that. How come nobody is telling the truth about who they hate for being successful, Obama talks about millionaires but wants to tax a couple makin $250K. That's a cop and an RN with a little overtime or a second job which many of us have because your friggin big brother government is already taking half our income in taxes now. So he can give cell phones and computers to welfare recepients. And healthcare to illegal aliens. Wake up America. You made a huge mistake trustin what he said.

The redistribution has gone to the 1%! We pay higher taxes than they do. Are you asking me, someone who works 10 hours a day, to feel sorry for people that make $250K? Well, boo hoo hoo.

how are you different than the couple the op mentioned, they just have better paying jobs? That is the fault of the 1%?
11:34 AM on 11/12/2011
No, I was explaining that most of those couples who make that combined income are working class people who take second jobs or work overtime to try to compensate for the 50% taxes they are already paying. BTW the lynch pin with this plan is keeping the poor poor so they need to keep the party who throws them crumbs in power. The other secret to the plan is not to blame those who didn't get an education or learn a skill to better themselves. It's the evil rich's fault. See, it's not your fault it's my evil wife's fault for getting three advanced degrees after her RN which she accomplishe including the RN while working full time and raising a family. She's such a Byatch you're right to take her income away. She needs to go to a reeducation camp to learn why we need passports to visit Mexico but they don't need no stinking papers to come here and work without visas and bancrupt our scools and hospitals. Clearly the answer is to tax us more. BTW even with her three jobs and my pension we're still not in the $250k range but we don't think those who are should subsidize the rest of us.

This incident had nothing to do with OWS. Did you even read the article or just skim the headline before jumping to conclusions?
09:48 PM on 11/12/2011
Oakland has shootings every other day. It's normal and why I don't go there for entertainment.
07:27 AM on 11/12/2011
No surprise here. Looks like the riots will continue leading up to the election. With the AG, Eric Holder in trouble over guns and money and Pres. Obama looking bad with a loan program that won't go away this election is looking more and more like a Law and Order choice. A union intimidation story and it could all be summed up in a court room add.

This had nothing to do with the Occupy Oakland, If anyone has been to Oakland, you would see that this area isnt the safest. The story discredits the people protesting. When it should read " Man shot and killed Near Occupy Oakland Encampment"

Now for all that is pointing and commenting, these people have the right to be there, just as the right to congragate and bear arm's. You may not like what they are doing, but this has been done by our forefathers, I suggest if you dont agree, fine but at least give them the credit for trying. Im 60 years old. This world will be their's. And with what we see now as progress, is a complete mess. We cant trust the elected officials, big banks, mortgage companys and anyone else that takes advantage of us. I dont agree with all that has happened. Everyday in NYC, there are rapes, assults, drug users, and homeless. I dont point and laugh or make comments, I was marching back in the day. They called us names too. And here we are older, not better off, the government used our SSI, our Medicare, our tax dollars. And look at us now.

yes the OWS should puruse the American dream instead of trying to suck the life out of the people that invest in the companies that make those jobs. i forgot their dream is to live off the government taxes paid by the 1%. lets make America greece. we see how far that goes.

What's wrong with the people (NOT Obama) having power? That's called Democracy.
08:38 PM on 11/12/2011
why do you talk that way. I am an independent and this kind of talk makes me want to make sure people like you don't run this country. How do you know whats true? From the news paper or the corporate people sponsoring you and the politicians you support. It will be independents. that will determine the next election. I have not been impressed with the pointing fingers and senseless accusations. I myself will educate myself on my own and not believe all the propaganda that the press and political parties throw out there.
02:23 AM on 11/12/2011
Dead bodies, drug use, sexual assualts, disorderly conduct. Yeah, sounds like a Tea Party rally to me!! It's no suprise that BHO and Pelosi support this "movement". If the left wants to claim this, more power to them. This isn't the part of the 99% that I fall into.

You don't read none too good. There's involved, and then there's "Involved".
From your own source:

"According to one witness and Occupy Oakland supporter, Rachel Tolmachoff, 55, of Pleasant Hill, a group of occupiers then intervened and tried to get the people involved in the fight to move on. A short time later, they heard between four and six gun shots and saw several men run by."

movemet? they dont even know why they are there. you ask one of these people they have no answer for why they protest. they want the rich to pay more tax. the rich already do pay more than 50% in taxes depending on what state they live in. one more thing this "movement" has already discredited itself by destroying small businesses around their encampments. This person was not shot AT the occupy protest in Oakland. It was outside the encampment. People are getting shot & murdered in Oakland almost daily & the occupy movement has nothing to do with it. There should be really be more accuracy in your headlines. Perhaps it wont have as much shock value but at least it will be correct reporting.

You speak as if you have actually been there or know or have associated with those who are involved in the movement... some are actual war veterans. The majority of the movement has been peaceful and violence hasnt ever been an overriiding theme or tool utilized by those involved in the movement. To say it is so is complete fabrication. Oakland is a violent city & it was violent long before these protests were ever even thought of.

Articles have stated that the fight started inside the camp and then moved outside the camp. Your analogy that just because it happened outside the camp, means it doesn't involve the camp is completely false.

It is my understanding the the person who was murdered had stayed at the encampment for a few nights. However there is no factual evidence that I know of that states that the shooter was involved or associated with the protest what so ever. It would be more accurate to say this is an isolated incident than to say that the protest is in any way responsible, perpetuated, or played a part in this murder. It is quite likely and very possible that the man went into the camp for safety because he was quite aware that someone was after him.
