MUKONO, Uganda -- A Ugandan court has sentenced a man to 30 years in prison for killing a gay rights activist.

A high court judge on Thursday handed down the sentence to 22-year-old Sidney Nsubuga Enoch, who admitted that he bludgeoned David Kato to death with a hammer in January.

Kato's slaying came only months after his picture was published in an anti-gay newspaper next to the words "Hang Them."

Enoch said he was provoked by sexual advances that Kato made toward him.

Gay rights activists have blamed an increase in homophobia in Uganda on evangelical preachers.

In May, the Ugandan parliament adjourned without discussing a controversial bill that proposed the death penalty for some homosexual acts.

While the police issued a statement saying that Kato’s killing was in no way related to his campaign for gay rights, many of us believe this entire story to be a cover up of the actual facts and events that led to his brutal murder.

What is of greatest concern to me is that the Ugandan government has failed to render a version of the events that makes any sense. On the one hand, given the context of antigay fervor in Uganda, the story implies that Kato’s homosexuality had something to do with his death, yet it refuses to consider that maybe it had nothing to do with sex and everything to do with a vendetta against Kato for his activism.

If a gay/lesbian had a sexual advance made toward him/her by a straight, would it be ok to beat that perosn to death with a hammer? It should work both ways.

Bludgeoning someone to death with a hammer = only 30 years? When it comes to justice for those who harm gay people, it seems we've not only exported our homophobic Christianity to Uganda, we've exported our homophobic courts as well.

You're right. Many times, Christianity and hatred go hand in hand.
