Slain Egyptian Christians Mourned As Hundreds March In Cairo

Copts Mourned Cairo March

AYA BATRAWY   11/11/11 04:29 PM ET   AP

CAIRO — Hundreds of Egyptians marched Friday through Cairo to commemorate 27 people killed last month in clashes with the military that triggered new criticism of Egypt's ruling generals and their handling of the aftermath of this year's uprising.

The violence on Oct. 9 was the worst since the revolution that ousted President Hosni Mubarak in February. Most of those killed were Coptic Christians who had been protesting an attack on a church in southern Egypt.

In Friday's march, crowds of Muslims and Christians called for unity as they marched from one of Cairo's main churches through one of the city's busiest streets, backing up traffic for several miles. Police guided the procession until it reached Tahrir Square, the epicenter of Egypt's uprising and the scene of continued protests directed at the military council that took over from Mubarak.

Several marchers wore T-shirts marked with the ancient Egyptian symbol known as the Ankh, or key of life, and wore ancient Egyptian-style dress. Coptic Christianity in Egypt dates back to the first century and the language used in its liturgy can be traced to the speech of Egypt's pharaohs.

The marchers also held photos of the dead, Christian crosses draped in the colors of the Egyptian flag and posters denouncing the military.

A Coptic preacher spoke to the crowd of hundreds through loudspeakers strapped on the back of a truck, telling them to support the military but to continue to demand justice.

Not all were in agreement, as several marchers held posters denouncing the military and Egypt's military ruler, Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, who was Mubarak's defense minister.

"Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi and his gang are playing with Egypt's future and leading Egypt to total destruction," one sign said.

Witnesses to the October bloodshed said that the military attacked protesters. According to forensics reports for the slain protesters, a third of victims were killed by being run over by armored vehicles, while two-thirds were shot with live ammunition. At least 21 of the 27 killed were Christians.

Copts, who make up about 10 percent of the country's 85 million people, have long complained of discrimination by Egypt's leaders.

State media said three soldiers were killed in the clashes. The military denied troops opened fire at protesters and said it is not in "the dictionary of the armed forces to run over bodies."

Egyptians are starting to realize they need to be people first - that means mother and fathers, sons and daughters - and religious second. Eventually, as standards improve in education, they will finally get rid of the cumbersome millstone which is religion.

My words of wisdom - any religious person who is peaceful, are not following their gods commands.

it's nice to actually see Muslims trying to do the right thing. The other lunatics killing and hurling objects at the copts should take a lesson from the peaceful muslims. I thought arab spring would be great for all involved except the tyrants but there is still much progress to be made before a true kind of equality is achieved. Best of luck to all those who want peace in Egypt. Peace or gtfo.

Hmmmm... Imagine that. Muslims protesting with Christians over the October 9, slaying of 27 Coptic Christians, in Cairo.

Pay attention America, especially you "Ground-Zero Mosque" protestors; you know who you are. It looks as though the Egyptians could teach Americans a thing or two about Religious Tolerance.

Just a reminder, Stacy: No Ground Zero Mosque protestors went on a killing rampage of Muslims. No Ground Zero mosque protestors attacked the Egyptian, Saudi or Pakistani embassy.

Extremism exists in ALL religions.

Extremism does exist in all religions. Just as extremism exists in all political movements. There is clearly trouble brewing in the middle east and central asia, so it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to compare mass-movements in that part of the world which pose a real threat to political stability, and the whack-jobs in the United States that nobody takes seriously. The leading exporter of terrorism today is not Catholicism, Protestantism, or the other tens of thousands of Christian denominations. Lets face it, terrorism is being sponsered in large part by Islamic-style theocracies, in particular Iran. Christian fundamentalists don't have any chance of installing a Christian form of biblical law here. Americans and Europeans are secular peoples who fight over things like big government vs. big business, not which prophet you claim allegiance to.

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

Allah should clarify his position on this passage before he completely loses the disbeliever vote:

"But as for those who disbelieve, garments of fire will be cut out for them; boiling fluid will be poured down on their heads, Whereby that which is in their bellies, and their skins too, will be melted; And for them are hooked rods of iron Whenever, in their anguish, they would go forth from thence they are driven back therein and (it is said unto them): Taste the doom of burning." (Quran 22:19-22)”
