Many New York Stores Sell Dogs From Puppy Mills

Puppy Mill

According to a new report conducted by the Humane Society of the United States, nearly 4,500 dogs sold in New York City pet stores are supplied by puppy mills, many that have been shipped from the Midwest.

NBC New York investigated the situation which found more than 100 pet stores selling dogs from the mills, which are known for their cruel treatment and lack of proper, sanitary conditions.

An official from the Humane Society released the following statement:

These high-priced pet stores claim to sell dogs from small private breeders, but are actually pushing dogs from huge Midwest puppy mills with some of the worst federal Animal Welfare Act violations imaginable. Consumers are being duped into buying puppies born to breeding dogs who spend their entire lives trapped in tiny wire cages, churning out litter after litter. The breeders themselves treat these animals as livestock.

The statement also claims that 11 stores were videotaped purchasing puppy mill dogs, despite specific claims to customers that their animals were not from such mills and instead bought from "private breeders."

Some of the stores were even said to have dogs being sold by known animal abuser Kathy Jo Bauck, who had her license revoked after being convicted of overworking and mistreating animals by torture.

Despite claims from store owners who insist innocence, NBC NY reports that the animal advocacy group has proof which includes shipping documents and video recordings.

Groups such as the Humane Society have long worked to ban puppy mills. In October, the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons rescued about 150 dogs from the Midwest to come to New York City to provide medical treatment and find new owners.

On a similar note, earlier this year, Le Petite Puppies in the West Village began banning customers who were demonstratively drunk from coming in and purchasing animals in their inebriated state.

The problems with commercial breeders are a state and government problem!!! If the USDA made an announcement that they were revoking all licences to commercial kennels and making them illegal then guess what!!!! There wouldn't be as much of a problem with puppy mills and bad breeders. Good breeders strive to make a better dog and invest a lot of money in doing so rarely ever making a profit. But guess what ? The USDA makes a lot of money selling licenses so I highly doubt Puppy Mills will ever be Illegal or Banned !!!!!!! People need to research breeder's and ask a lot of questions about how the dog's are being raised as well as visit the breeders house and facility, a red flag is when a breeder does not allow people to come see the animals in person !

Of course, dogs sold in stores come from volume breeders. Responsible, hobby breeders would never, ever let their dogs be sold in stores. In order to get a puppy from a responsible breeder, you have to meet some serious requirements and usually sign a contract. The responsible hobby breeders see the puppies they bring into this world as a big responsibility and think of them as their babies.

There is utterly no excuse for any pet shop to be selling puppies. Period. They all know exactly what is going on, and they choose to participate in the abuse.

Kathy Bauck is notorious for abject disrespect for animals and though she had lost her license in 2010 she was seen earlier this year buying a large horse trailer full of dogs, from a horrendous dog auction in Ohio.

Actually it's not just puppy mills, it's basically any breeder. Buying a dog in this climate of pet overpopulation is nothing less than cruelty. People who say that they just have to have a Lhasa Apso or Poddle or watever the breed maybe because Grandpa has one who is just so cute are completely delusional. Not only do dogs have completely different personalities and temperaments regardless of the breed, of the 4 million plus that are killed in shelters each year, more than 25% are purebreds. Not to mention that there are thousands of breed specific rescue groups all over the country where you can adopt any breed your heart desires. And then there are the morons who refuse to adopt from a shelter because "shelter dogs are tainted." Just where the hell do you think these dogs came from? You believe that shelters have this pod where they grow shelter dogs? They all came from either breeders or cruel, neglectful owners. People who'd rather buy a dog are egocentric idiots who think it adds to their prestige somehow to own a pet with a pedigree and should not be allowed to have any pets at all. After over 25 years of doing rescue, I am pretty much resigned to the fact that animals will continue to suffer and die because the majority of people in this country refuse to see what is actually happening and have no regard for life.

You really don't understand much, do you? Getting your dog from rescue is a good thing but there is an important place for the responsible breeders who are producing well-socialized puppies from health tested parents. My dogs all came from breeders and I am not an egocentric idiot and I am not at all interested in prestige. I am interested in a pet with a good temperament and few health issues. Besides, who do you think runs the breed rescue groups? Breeders, that's who. Until all pet lovers can work together, there will be problems.
*Before you write something nasty accusing me of being a breeder. I have never bred a litter. I did allow a champion male of mine to be used at stud once but that was 30 years ago.

You are not just an egocentric idiot, you are delusional. Breeders are important? Are you really living in this country where 4 million animals are killed each year because there are no homes for them? And how many breed specific rescues do you work with every day so you know who runs them? I deal with these groups all over the country and they are all run by people just like me who are trying to ease the suffering. What kind of monster are you that you actually believe that all these animals - the ones in shelters, the ones on the street, the ones thrown away by their owners - deserve to die so breeders can pad their pockets? Your statement regarding well socialized and health tested puppies is lunacy! Over 25 % of dogs killed in shelters are purebreds and each and every dog I rescue is not only "health tested and fully socialized" but also fully vetted. My adoption application comprises 3 pages and I do vet and reference checks as well as a home visit before I adopt to anyone. You sound like a particularly cruel and vile human being.

Kennel footage, http://network.bestfriends.org/initiatives/puppymills/pages/kennel-footage.aspx
There is a sucker born every minute and these people are making puppy millers rich and adult breeders live their whole lives in wire kennels. You can find the same quality of pup in a rescue or shelter. If it wasn't so sad I would laugh at people who pay hundreds and thousands of dollars for a designer dog, which is nothing more than a mixed mutt. We have been talking and talking about mills for years now, when is the cruelty going to stop?

Or you could go to a responsible breeder. Of course, that person would require you to prove that you had a fenced yard and understood how to care for a puppy. But that person would always be there to give you advice and assistance with your puppy and that person would take the puppy back if you didn't want it anymore.
On the other hand, you are spot on about the 'designer dogs'.

You are really delusional. I just saw this comment after reading your reply and I can't believe how anyone can be this demented. Responsible breeder? What an oxymoron. You have to prove something to them? Whoopi-do! When I post my rescued animals on line, people have to fill out an application which I carefully review, then I do the vet and reference checks and if all looks good, I do a home visit. If I decide to adopt to them, I follow up periodically and it's also part of my adoption contract that they must contact me if any problems arise. THAT IS ADOPTION! And my dogs are fully vetted - spayed or neutered, vaccinated, dewormed and HW tested for an adoption fee of $150.00. And you think breeders are just wonderful and conscientious?

LEAVE THE PUPPY MILLS ALONE.......................

Why?

You obviously have NO idea of the cruel treatments these dogs receive in puppy mills. Or else you are heartless. They ALL need to be Banned - and people need to stop buying from pet stores.

Yes,and alot of the amish run puppy mills. And NOT ALL are run in the right way either.Alot of people that run mills believe that--when a dog is too old to breed or is just too worn, they just shoot them.

When you BUY a dog you enable this kind of an economy for pets. You should always adopt.

NEVER BUY A DOG AT A PET STORE! By doing so you are support the cruel and inhumane treatment of dogs in Puppy Mills.

ALWAYS ADOPT! The cost of adoption is always less than the cost of buying from a Pet Store..

Every State has Animal Shelters with websites on the internet with a list of dogs available for adoption.

Go to PETFINDER DOT COM to find animals for adoption in your area.
