NPR Staffer Marshall Terry Eats One Of The World's Hottest Peppers (VIDEO)

First Posted: 11/11/11 09:57 AM ET Updated: 11/11/11 10:04 AM ET

In the video below, you nearly feel the pain of the poor sap who willingly sampled what could be the world's hottest pepper. NPR affiliate WFAE profiled Rock Hill, South Carolina resident Ed Currie about his quest to grow a super hot pepper. Currie is waiting to hear back from Guinness World Records on if his pepper is hotter than the Trinidad Scorpion "Butch T" from Australia, currently holding the title for world's hottest pepper. Staffer Marshall Terry agreed to sample Currie's tiny red vegetable of terror and we're guessing he regrets his decision. He vomits, hallucinates, has trouble talking and seems generally confused about his surroundings.

Vicariously feel his pain by watching the video below:

You tube has some great videos of people attempting to eat "ghost peppers" and you end up feeling really sorry for some of them, especially when they are collapsed on the couch begging to be taken to the emergency room.

It reminds me of the Simpsons episode where Homer eats chile made from an insanesly hot pepper and then goes on a hallucinogenic spiritual trip.

"Trinidad Scorpion Pepper" is from Australia? No. It's from Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean. It is merely sold in Australia,

World's hottest pepper is Ghost pepper also know as Naga Jolokia. These pepper has a Scoville heat index of over 1 ,000,000 and one seed from this pepper will burn our mouth for upto 30 mins. So would like to know what pepper you had? Hot peppers are terrific way to spice up.

I didn't read or hear any indication that Marshall was accustomed to eating hot peppers, which could have had considerable effect on his reaction. There are people who spend much of their time in search of ever hotter varieties and higher Scovilles. It's possible such a person might even have dared to take a mouthful of the pepper in question, chewed, swallowed, and seconds later exclaimed "Woohoo! Now that's what I call nice and hot! Mind if I try some more?"

I grow and eat peppers from the Jalapeno to the Bhut Jolokia and I'm wondering what kind of pepper this is? I know the Trinidad Scorpion is the new hottest (over 1.4 on the scoville scale). I had a cup of chile made with it at a recent chile tasting contest and it was unbelievably hot, but, had an awesome flavor to it. I would love to try these.

I like hot peppers. I'm also quite fond of my insides. So Habanero is as hot as I'll go.

I guess there's a subculture of exotic pepper breeders out there. I've read that a scotch bonnet is the hottest pepper. I'd never eat even a jabanero. Italian red cherry peppers are as much as my gut can tolerate.
