Steve Jobs, Elizabeth Warren, Mohamed Bouazizi Nominated For 'Time' Person Of The Year 2011

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 11/11/11 11:33 AM ET   Updated: 11/11/11 11:33 AM ET

Time magazine recently announced that the late Steve Jobs has been nominated to be the magazine's 2011 Person of the Year. If he wins, he would be the first person to receive the award posthumously and the second tech titan to win in as many years. Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg took home the honor in 2010.

Jobs has graced the cover of Time several times. Since his first appearance in 1982, Jobs has been on the cover alone, or accompanied by one of his inventions, a total of seven times, including a memorial cover the week he died.

But not everyone thinks the Apple co-founder deserves the Person of the Year title. International Business Times argued that, though Jobs has contributed much in his lifetime, during 2011 specifically his cancer battle prevented him from doing enough to qualify for the honor.

"When judged on his contributions to the world this year, Jobs had understandably done very little compared to the other nominees," wrote the IBT, also pointing out that while Jobs' products have made our lives more enjoyable, the contributions he has made do not measure up to other nominees who are "fighting to make the world a better place."

The rest of the Person of the Year nominees were chosen by a 6-person panel that included "NBC Nightly News" anchor Brian Williams, Attorney Anita Hill, conservative lobbyist Grover Norquist, actor Jesse Eisenberg, "Saturday Night Live" writer and actor Seth Meyers and Chef Mario Batali.

Take a look at the slideshow (below) to see who else was nominated for Time's Person of the Year. Vote for the nominees you'd most like to see on the cover of Time. Do you have any suggestions for nominees? Let us know in the comments.

Bouazizi should have been man of the year for 2010. Sort of like the 2004 tsunami, but was too late for the end of the year countdowns.

Bankers? Honestly, you cannot be serious. After all they put us through? That's how you get on the cover of Time? Dishonestly represent your product to sell it and then bet against it?

Hey, I have an idea - let's nominate Greece for being the most fiscally sound nation and best influence on the world economy!

I would prefer Dr. Warren on the cover. But I have a feeling
that OWS will be the winner. Dr. Warren's time will come,
after she wins the 2016 campaign for President of the USA.

Elizabeth Warren should be on the cover. She was a Harvard law professor who is one of the nation's leading consumer advocates and bankruptcy experts which is why Obama asked her to head a committee to investigate the 2008 financial collapse. She came up with the idea of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, a government agency set up to protect consumers from abusive lending practices. She took it upon herself to start investigating the banks and, when she suggested stricter bank regulations, they began an all out assault on her character. Still, she worked tirelessly to build the agency from scratch, organizing its management structure and pushing it through Congress. In 2010, when the C.F.P.B. was made official as part of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, everyone assumed that Warren would be asked to head the agency. Instead, Obama announced that he would be nominating former Ohio attorney general Richard Cordray to head the new agency. It was a slap in the face to Warren, even though he publicly thanked her for all her hard work. I guess Obama needed to appease the banks. After all, they donated $43 million to his 2008 presidential campaign and he was depending on them to fund his 2012 campaign as well. Elizabeth Warren is a true hero of the middle class and one of the few people in politics who actually has personal ethics. That is why she should be Person of the Year.

Steve Jobs in my personal opinion has directly and indirectly touched the lives of so many as well the industry itself over the course of his career. From education, to communication. Just my opinion, so please , no SJ slammers from the peanut gallery.

Agreed, but if that's the case you have to give him the honor every year. I think it's meant to recognize contributions for this specific year. He can't be given the award just because he passed, unless he would have gotten it anyway.

Nope. Instead Time magazine should split that honor between Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Leymah Gbowee and Tawakkol Karman ( the 3 women that were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize )

Since Steve has died there will not be another chance for them to honor him under this banner, Steve Jobs should be Time Magazine's Person of the Year.

What has the man done for the 99% lately?

For evil influence, TIME should choose Grover Norquist.

For good influence, TIME should choose Ralph Nader.

I'm stunned that "the banks" are on the list. They deserve no recognition for they have done absolutely nothing except contibute to our national debt. It must be a joke.

Is the magazine called "Time" because it's timely? Should Steve Jobs be person of the year because he did something exceptional this year?

It will sell magazines. Mohamed Bouazizi should probably win, but most people don't know who he is (was).
