Michele Bachmann Campaign Claims CBS Bias After Email Points To Low Poll Numbers

First Posted: 11/12/2011 10:16 pm Updated: 01/12/2012 4:12 am

Michele Bachmann's campaign team thinks it has proof that CBS deliberately snubbed the Minnesota Congresswoman during Saturday night's Republican debate.

The supposed smoking gun? An email from a CBS producer who predicted that Bachmann would not receive many questions from moderators Scott Pelley and Major Garrett.

In the message, which was apparently sent by mistake to a Bachmann staff member, CBS News producer John Dickerson responds to a correspondent about the possibility of Bachmann appearing as a guest on a network "webshow." His response:

"Okay let's keep it loose though since she's not going to get many questions and she's nearly off the charts in the hopes that we can get someone else"

The email was posted to Bachmann's Facebook page.

Beneath it, her campaign manager voiced his frustration in a statement:

Team--This is Keith Nahigian, Michele's campaign manager. While Michele has been onstage at tonight's debate demonstrating strong leadership on foreign policy and national security, we received concrete evidence confirming what every conservative already knows - the liberal mainstream media elites are manipulating the Republican debates by purposely suppressing our conservative message and limiting Michele's questions.

View the attached email by CBS News' political director from earlier today--we need to show the liberal media elite that we won't stand for this outrageous manipulation. Help us fight this affront by sharing this with your friends.

The outrage didn't stop online, though. CNN's Peter Hamby reports that Nahigian used some colorful language discussing the incident on Saturday night:

Furious with Dickerson's response, Bachmann's campaign manager Keith Nahigian stormed through the spin room, where he said, 'John Dickerson should be fired. He is a piece of shit. He is a fraud and he should be fired.'

The Bachmann team also claimed, via tweet, that CBS had held an "emergency meeting" before the debate to discuss "fallout" from Dickerson's email.

Dickerson and CBS responded to the allegations in straightforward fashion.

Ben Smith of Politico tweeted a comment from Dickerson:

"@jdickerson emails: 'Bachmann is at 4% in the polls & has been for a while. Other candidates aren't.I sent an email based on that.'"

As for CBS, Peter Hamby tweeted:

"CBS on Bachmann's bias accusation: 'It was a candid exchange about the reality of the circumstances--Bachmann remains at 4% in the polls.'"

Bachmann's campaign responded on Sunday, sending out an email encouraging supporters to protest CBS' actions:

An excerpt via Politico:

Please show your support by tweeting your outrage to CBSNEWS and John Dickerson or posting on Facebook to give them a piece of your mind. Afterwards, I hope you will make a donation to Michele's campaign to ensure she has the funds necessary to fight back against the liberal media.

The media are lapdogs to their corporate owners. They have decided that only Romney, Cain, Gingrich & Perry are to be allowed to speak. They cannot be trusted. Do your own research and don't be fooled by the media.

Liberal media bias! How DARE CBS ignore Bachmann's conservative message to focus on the OBVIOUS socialists Cain, Romney, Gingrich, and Perry!

Could it be that the media, liberal or otherwise, is simply tired of hearing her repeat the same "talking points" regardless of the question asked?

If she thinks that this is a blatant case of liberal media bias, can she get the Republicans on Congress's Supercommittee to drop their opposition to new taxes? Surely a liberal media would be reminding everyone that taxes were higher under Bill Clinton, and unemployment dropped to a post-Vietnam War record low.

I've been listening to Republicans whine about the "liberal media" for 41 years now. In all that time, I've heard only two or three say that they shouldn't give that enemy so much ammunition. Either they know it's a lie or they're masochistically begging to be humiliated.

The only thing she's strong in is her own entitled opinion. She blows at foreign policy, history, The Constitution, health, economics and national security. Even if they did, which they probably did edge her out, it's no more than ANY news or media outlet does. It's what they do. They censor the news, they censor people's opinions, they steer the huddling masses where they want them to go. News hasn't been NEWS since, well...ever. It's why I get all my news from the DAILY SHOW and the internet where I can actually think about what is being "presented". Everything else is fluff aimed at making everyone as stupid and as open to shopping and consumerism as they possibly can.

If it was just Bachman, I wouldn't worry. However they did the same thing to Ron Paul who is for our constitutional liberties, against unnecessary wars and for getting our financial house in order. He is #2 in the Iowa poll, yet the media never talks about him and CBS gave him only 89 seconds of speaking time. He represents my beliefs and the beliefs of most of the people I know, yet te media won't let him get his message out. I can't believe how our country has been hijacked!

How really smart of Bachmann to call national attention to her low standing in the polls and CBS' conclusion she's not a player!

This is a popularity contest as much as a republican race for nomination. Face it, one by one each will fall out of favor until there is one left for which republicans will have to settle. Goodbye Buchmann, Perry, Cain, Huntsman, (never was Paul) and eventually Gingrich.

Yeah well, Huffpost will never show it to you, but the latest Iowa poll has the slipping Cain @ 20%, the increasingly popular Paul @ 19%, the ho-hum Romney @ 18%, and the philandering, felonious, disorganized and broke Gingrich @ 17%...This was not an on-line poll. This was done by the same company that does the Des Moines register poll. When Paul wins in Iowa, the headlines will read: 'Romney Second in Iowa, Cain Third'...Huffpost will ignore this also and instead focus on whatever the Kardashians are doing.

All y'all are ignorant. YEs, it was biased. I thought so during the actual event.! As a woman, a Demo and a "minority", I thought Michelle had the strongest answers on the mid-east. She spoke of places, timing, and what she would do...which none of the other candidates did. I was very impressed with her. If you listen to liberal media...which is hard to avoid...especially talk shows, you will hear attitude. Not facts. Or facts are screwed up. I apologize to Michelle for all of these lame narrow minded people that have no real idea who you are and how much you actually understand about running this topsy turvy country.
